We have a wireless base on the wall in the kitchen with answering machine built in, and I have another wireless base on my desk in the basement with 2 remotes - o0ne in the living room and one in the bedroom. We have both bases and the IP Phone system on UPS units. On my Panasonic system the system works as long as there is a fully charged handset in the base. My panasonic set works whether there is a handset in the base or not. |

The homeowner does not own the land under the power lines and FPL gets medieval on any tree that encroaches into the right of way. They cut back anything they can reach from a bucket truck. It is not like those tunnels we see through the branches I see up north. What about power lines across a field? How does the harvester get under? Most power lines run through a right of way owned by the power company but when there is an easement across private land, they will make the poles high enough so the permitted use in the easement will not affect the lines. They have the same issue crossing rivers. The lines behind my house are 120 feet above the water and the river is only about 4-5' deep so it won't ever be an issue. For some reason they pay us money if we have power lines over our property here. The article doesn't say why. https://www.theguardian.com/money/20...ensation-claim I guess we just had more land available when they started running utilities. A lot of the high voltage distribution runs along abandoned rail right of way land. When they plat a new community the right of way for roads and utilities is set aside then. I suppose that is a foreign concept in the 1000 year old UK but we still have vast swaths of undeveloped land as soon as you get away from the North East and a places near big cities. Where I am in SW Florida it was all palmetto scrub and cattle ranches 30 years ago. Now you could drop a golf ball in Ft Myers and play all the way to Naples, only having to jump a lot of fences and wade across a few small river/creeks. Just watch out for the alligators :-) |

Here in the US you can easily get a mobile with a different area code than the area in which you are physically located and use the phone. For a time I had a second mobile phone here that had a Houston, TX area code and prefix. Your phone number pretty much becomes YOUR property once you get it. I used to have Cellular One (which morphed into AT&T) and then switched to Sprint and now to Verizon Wireless and have retained the same number across carriers. Plates are assigned by the various states and territories and each does it their own way. My state assigns plates to the individual who, in turn, registers their usage on the vehicle owned at the time. Other states follow the UK and issue them to the car and when the car is transferred to a new owner, so are the plates. |

These days it is not as much an area code as just another 3 digits to allow more numbers. But it's mainly a label so you know what you're phoning. In the US area codes used to be informative but as the phone companies started running out of numbers, the "area" in area code became less specific. Some states get by with one area code and there are cities with 3 or 4. Depending on how they implemented the extra area codes, some local calls can be dialed with 7 digits, some require 10 (plus 1). I am lucky to be in an area without an "overlay" so I only need 7 digits to call my neighbor. Because of "number portability" you have no way of knowing if it is a cell. |

The mobil user is the only one getting charged for minutes, incoming or outgoing if they are not on an unlimited plan. It's stupid to slap a label on anyone because of who they are whether it's Black, White, Brown, Yellow etc. rather than what they are. When I have friends and acquaintances who are Jewish and worship as Protestants or Christian Scientists or Anglos who convert to Judaism the label you (and others) choose to place on them become rather idiotic. If, and it appears this MIGHT be your position, you think all who believe in a religion are "Religious Nutters" then your thoughts might be a bit more tolerable in that they ARE religious and "nutter" is merely your opinion. ;-) |

Yep, you take the plate with you when you buy a new car and every few years you get a different one. The states run the plate system and title the cars. Personally I think the insurance companies should be in the license plate business and cut the government out completely. They can send the tax in for their customers. The insurance company is the one with the nation wide computer systems, the desire to be sure all cars are insured and the skin in the game when things go bad. Why involve 50 incompetent state governments and computers that may not be communicating between each other in any real sense. |

I thought America was capitalist. You own something, nobody should tell you what you can do with it. It is all from the insurance companies. If you do not have storm insurance, the codes are not really that important, particularly "flood". I still build compliant things, usually exceeding code but that is because I believe the principles in the code is what keeps my house from blowing away |

It all depends on your plan. These days people with smart phones usually get unlimited "phone" because most of the bandwidth is gobbled up with data. We have older residential areas in the Birmingham Metro area that are nothing but trees. Whenever there is a bad storm, trees come down. Back in the 1990's me an my brother were installing a lot of NG powered Generac generators in wealthy neighborhoods like in the city of Mountain Brook where all the rich Honkies live. The smallest was the 8kw with the B&S 16hp air cooled and the larger gensets 10-20kw used a Turkish Fiat 4cyl liquid cooled engine. The last Generac I installed was earlier in this century and it was equipped with Generac's own manufactured big twin cyl air cooled engine. I've no experience with their newest gensets but the most popular model seems to be their 22kw whole house backup model. According to their site, they have a new model genset designed to work with alternative energy or off the grid systems like solar power that kicks in when the batteries run down. That would be an interesting setup for a home in the sticks with large solar panels and a big propane tank. ヽ(ヅ)ノ http://www.generac.com/ [8~{} Uncle Generated Monster |

It so easy to replace a battery in the APC units and the newer AGM SLA batteries last a lot longer than the old gel cell batteries. I bought my last batch of batteries from a local electronics supplier for around $16.00 each. At home, I have 60mbs from the same provider. The hospital I use has extremely fast Internet service. I think I measured 100mbs the last time I connected to the hospital WiFi during the day. Here at the center I've measured 60mbs at night. Me and my brother have never had our Charter/Spectrum Cable Internet go out that I can recall. The modems are plugged into backup power supplies along with our computers so everything stays up even when the power blinks.?(?)? How fast is it when the cable is down? That is my problem with Comcast here. The internet goes down at my FILs house about once a day. My wife pays extra for a Comcast Commercial account and their performance is not much better. My Telco based DSL is up pretty much 100% of the time. When it does blink, it is just that a very short blip. Comcast can be down days at a time, particularly after a storm. Century link is underground. Comcast is up on poles. It hasn't been down very much and I don't remember the last time I lost Internet service at my home. Back in January of 2015, the last time I was home, the power was out in my neighborhood for 6 hours. I have a number of UPS units rated from 350va to 1kw on my computer and network gear and I never lost Internet service. I shut everything down except for the LED desk lamps which were plugged into 500va UPS units and the lamps kept the house safely lit during the power outage. ?(?)? Here at the center the Internet was out for a while until rolled down to the administrator's office and told them how to power cycle the network equipment to get the system back up. It went down because of a power blink. There are generators here at the center if the power goes out but they need a UPS on the computer network equipment. I know you have a lot of storms down there in the peninsula but we have them too up here in the hills. Perhaps the storms here aren't as severe as those down there between the Atlantic and The Gulf??(?)? We have ass kicking storms here all the time. We would call "Sandy" "Tuesday afternoon". The difference is out building code is tougher and FPL knows how to mitigate storms. Power was off after Charley for about 18 hours. I am not sure it went off in Wilma at all. If it did it was less than an hour. I have had a new in the box generator in my garage for a decade. The power has not been off long enough to justify opening the box. I'd hate all those codes.
