Background: Someone in the off topic section of the forum asked to see a
snap shot of my Desktop because he was interested in loading Linux on his
computer. I wrote in the post that this might cause my membership to be
canceled because they might think it's to risque.

Well someone asked to see it so here it is. Let me know what you would do?

I think I would have refrained from sending "that" shot. It probably could
have been easy to have had no back ground or one a bit more suitable for
public viewing.

Borderline ... but not more than any family member will see on the cover of
any lingerie catalogue delivered in the mail for any one to see, and far
less offensive than a Viagra/Cialis commercial during prime time in your
family living room.

I personally think it's beautiful.
Pretty girl, scantily clothed but NOT obscene in any way.
If the objectors would open their minds a little and look at the art, they
might see what you see AND be able to appreciate it.

I have found in my lifetime, that as a general rule, people who think of
things like this as dirty, are closet perverts themselves.

Uh, I don't quite follow, did SC ban this image or did you
discern that it might?

No they baned it

If you were so concerned that the image might offend then just
remove the image, grab the screen and then put it back.

It was in an off topic area and the guy that I was posting it for replied it
was an awesome desktop. My Wife and daughter use my machine even though
they have their own and they have never said it offended them.

What I think:

Not particularly offensive.
Not particularly interesting.
Nothing worth censoring
Nothing worth getting upset about if it is censored.

What I would do:

1) Decide whether I like the on-topic content of the forum in question
(for me the answer would be "yes")
2) Decide whether their unwillingness to accept this graphic
outweighed the value of the content (for me the answer would be "no")
3) Based on the answers to 1 and 2, Either enjoy the forum as it's
offered (including restrictions the system operator or moderators on
his behalf may impose) or take my posting elsewhere.

Funny, I know Dennis. I never took him to be that conservative. And by
the way, I think he's an Arkansas hillbilly.

I've kind of gleaned from back channel discussions with other
disenfranchised that a lot of this seems to stem from Keith Outten,
the head cheese. Keith was the one who got the ball rolling as the
Pond was drying up along with his tech guy Aaron something-or-other.

Things weren't like that in 2003/04, I can assure you. One of the
original moderators was Ken Salisbury, recently deceased, and who I
also knew, and he was definitely even handed, keep out the
politics/religion/distasteful stuff (he was an Alabama hillbilly).
Frankly, he was the only moderator I remember seeing in those days.

As I got more heavily involved with WoodCentral, my time being divided
between there, the wreck, and SMC, I spent less time at SMC--probably
letting six months or more go by before taking a look, and eventually
even a year. I could see the personality had changed.

Then early this year Aaron decided to unilaterally change the color
scheme about a half hour before my annual visit. It might not have
been a big deal if it had been some reasonable colors, but it was
horrible, and the whole community was up in arms about it. There were
dozens of posts, virtually 100% of which were negative.

Aaron got on and said he wasn't impressed, that he had several private
emails supporting him. I posted something to the effect that such a
claim was a long discredited internet tactic to try and garner support
for a faulty or failed premise. I got a back channel email from
someone I have never heard of chastising me for calling Aaron a liar
and that he had deleted my post. I told him I didn't know who he was
and to buzz off.

I must have been put on a wanted poster, because a couple of days
later I made an informative post alerting folks to an article which
had recently been put up at WoodCentral which would have been of
interest to all. My post was deleted and when I tried to sign in, I
was blocked. Apparently in one of my semiannual hiati they had
implemented a policy of no links to other sites. WTF?!?

I've never been banned from anything in my life. But, I am actually
wearing my Scarlet B with honor, as it is utterly symbolic that if a
place chooses to ban me, it is clearly a place absolutely unworthy of
serious consideration for anything but childish power plays.

Although your assessment may be reasonable, it's one thing knowing
what the limits are going in. Surprise attacks, are an entirely
different matter. It's too bad that you consider too much of WC to be
"off topic" (it's absolutely no worse than here and I see you're still
hanging around). The graphic shown above wouldn't even have raised an
eyebrow over there. That is more important to me than any amount if
content. I don't need any childish power trips by self-important,
untalented, authority wannabes. I had enough of that with 30 years in
the FAA.

I think you may be confusing me with someone else. I have never
complained about off-topic content, either here or Wood Central.
Filters are a wonderful thing. In fact, I like the Wood Central
"library" of articles and of old Badger Pond content. My only
"complaint" about Wood Central is that I don't like the interface. I
find most (all?) web-based forums to be far inferior to usenet from a
pure user-interface standpoint. I find SMC annoying but tolerable in
that regard. I have chosen not to participate in WoodCentral for that
reason. Not a BFD; just my own personal choice, with which I am
comfortable and which I don't feel any need to promote to others. In
fact, I envy those who can stand the interface--they probably get good
content. I'll probably try it every so often to see if my tolerance
level has increased.

The graphic shown above wouldn't even have raised an

Yes, I did. I mixed you up with evodawg.

My only "complaint" about Wood Central is that I don't like the
interface. I find most (all?) web-based forums to be far inferior to
usenet from a pure user-interface standpoint.

I guess I don't get that. In my news reader (Free Agent) I see a list
of topics (admittedly collapsed) from which I can pick and choose what
to read and what to discard. Other than the collapsed threads and the
ability to discard, how is that different from, say, WoodCentral
(maybe that's the whole thing--I don't know).

I find SMC annoying but tolerable in that regard.

Actually, I disliked the software they chose right from the outset,
which almost assuredly is what inclined me to WC in the beginning. It
has collapsed threads AND it limits you to about 25 threads per
browser page, and there are generally four or five "sticky" threads at
the top, costing me 20% of the content. Browsing is utterly maddening.

The WC method (not collapsed) and the similar format of the old BP has
whatever time period you specify displayed on a single page--just like
my Free Agent does. Like I said, I don't get it.

I have chosen not to participate in WoodCentral for that
reason. Not a BFD; just my own personal choice, with which I am
comfortable and which I don't feel any need to promote to others.

Of course. This whole mini thread is based on my erroneous reply to
your post. I didn't intend for you to defend your choice.

Infact, I envy those who can stand the interface--they probably get
good content. I'll probably try it every so often to see if my tolerance
level has increased.

Well, in my case, it's as much about the people as it is the content.
There are some people's posts I read even if I haven't read the whole
thread, just because I like what they say and/or how they say it.

The graphic shown above wouldn't even have raised an
eyebrow over there. That is more important to me than any amount if

Interesting. Whatever floats your boat.

As far as Sawmill Creek...

I think it's a great place, with great folks, and great moderators. I get
tons of information and education from a group of folks who are sharp and
respectful. Yes, they run a tight ship - but I'm glad they do. I don't
think there's any powertrip involved.

Folks on Usenet are conditioned to get away with murder, and I'm glad that
folks have to reign it in on Sawmill. I do woodworking as I enjoy it, and
it's a way for me to unwind... I don't need the fighting and bickering.

As far as the picture, yea - not a big deal. But you can't please
everybody, and you have to draw the line on standards - or there aren't
any.

There HAS to be a line.

Sounds like it's time to give it a more thorough "test drive". My
point of comparison is also Agent. Thanks (maybe!) for the impetus.

Always thought the same way. I looked at the moderator's web site that
banned the picture and he looked to be some Kentucky Hillbilly.

Being one of those Kentucky Hillbilly's -- thanks. For the record, I don't
see anything wrong with the picture. I've seen less material on the beach.

Well someone asked to see it so here it is. Let me know what you would do?

I don't really see anything all that offensive about the posting,
particularly since it was in response to a request. If the moderator had a
problem, he should have e-mailed and asked if you would remove the element
he found questionable. Seems a bit heavy-handed.

If it was me, would I have posted that background? Probably not, just
knowing that, in a family forum, it might cause some parent some problems.
But if someone else did so, I wouldn't have been particularly upset by it.

Are you running gnome or kde?

You know, your anti-Christian prejudice and bigotry are way more offensive
than the original posting. This isn't the first time you've expressed such
bigotry and it is somewhat tiresome.

I would have removed it, not a problem. The guy that asked to see the

This, not directed at you personally Leon, is a topic that goes about a yard
up my ass.
As a gal who spent most of her adult life working around men, in shops and
hanging out with the guys I may have just grown a thick skin.
But I think all of this sexual harassment stuff is about 95% bullwash.

I remember working in one shop, when I was in my 20s, walking around a
corner and having one of the guys throw water on the front of my white
t-shirt.

There were several of them, and yea they all got a quick peek and a good
laugh. Rather than holler sexual harassment, I threatened him with revenge
that would have him singing tenor in the Vienna Boy's Choir. He quit, simple
as that. We were still buddies afterward.

Guys and gals used to be able to horse around, often what is now referred to
as sexual harassment was no more than flirting. Awkward at best, but
flirting just the same. You could tell a dirty joke, those were the best,
you could just be yourself for the most part and no one really thought much
of it. If they did, they handled it right there and then and it was over. If
not, you got your dad, brother, hubby or boyfriend to go have a talk with
the guy.

I just don't get it I suppose. Anytime I've ever had someone make advances
that were unwelcome, I just stared them in the eye and told them to knock it
off and they did.
..... of course, having always been around the boys, I was known to be a
pretty good shot too.

Now that I'm 50 and fat... I kinda miss a little sexual harassment now and
then ;ŹD

The above remark was to make you feel a little better about your
lament.

50 doesn't sound bad to me at all...I'm 62.

Absolutely agree. But if you get tagged with sexual harassment you are in
for a bad day. I totally agree with your thoughts of sexual harassment. As
usual the far left wants the government to control everything. Believe me
if the government did not threaten to step in, the companies would care
less. What ever happened to adults being adults and making their own
decisions about where they want to work and what they want to talk about.
If you are offended by adult conversation you need to grow up or speak up
for your self. I suspect it will not be long before the government will
require sexual neutralization before you can apply for a work card so that
you can work some where. Men will be men, women will be women. The problem
with our society is that men want to be women and women want to be men and
that simply stirs up the hornets nest.

I think the problem is that you posted to a public fourm, correct? Although
the picture was requested and appreciated by the requester, it was not for
his eyes only, correct?

When dealing with the public you always have to ask yourself, will this be
appropriate to display for all to see or hear in this day and age?

"smut" is in the eyes of the beholder in this case, I fear. I've seen worse
on the labels of some rock band CD's that kids everywhere buy. If she was
nude, I can see the problem in a family group but this is no worse than the
Swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated.

IMHO, you did nothing wrong but I'm not the moderator of the group.

Funny though, I thought 'this day and age' was 2008, not 1883.

You can be too worried about everybody else. That way lies political
correctness, not being able to call a blackboard a blackboard and other
absurd stupidities.

If the picture was of a nude, or even topless, then maybe you have a
point. But even so...

Presumably the people who are offended enough to complain at that sort of
thing lock their kids away all summer and never ever go to a beach?

I could not tell if it was smut or not from the small photo. If someone
would please send me a 24" x 48" poster I'd be happy to render a decision
though.
