What a bunch of happy horse ****.

There will never be another "grass roots" refinery built in the USA
for a couple of reasons.

1) Not in my back yard. (NIMBY)
No one wants a refinery built in their back yard or near their town,
etc and fight the permitting process at every step in the process.

Gotta agree with here Lew, I believe more refineries would be built if
it were not for the liberal greenies, thank you California mentality.

There's been talk about needing a massive new pipeline to pump Canadian
oil to Texas where the refineries are. I wonder, why not build a new
refinery in Montana instead?

The closer a refinery is to a large population area the less expensive
it is to distribute it.

Evidently, there are a couple of refineries complaining that they
don't get the oil from there now, and both are immediately willing.
Pipe it down to the 9 existing refineries in WY or MT instead, and let
them build more capacity. I'm sure they'd be willing.

Interesting list, isn't it? Look at Japan vs China!

What ****es me off is the amount of natural gas they burn through to
melt the oil tar out of the sand. Absolutely ridiculous.

Very true, however that does not mean that "pump prices" will reflect that
lesser expense.

Ugh-oh... methinks we could spin this kind of thinking into a sub-thread on
efficiencies. I'm thinking... oh, maybe... ethanol...

And what people forget is that the Keystone pipeline would run
Canuckistani oil over US ground to be processed and all of it would
then be EXPORTED. Let's make a much shorter pipeline, OK?

Last week a weird thing happened with gas prices around here. I live in
Atlanta during the week and commute back home to E. Alabama for the weekend.
Gas prices up there jumped $.40 just before last weekend but they didn't move
a penny here (they'd both increased about $.20 in the week or two before
that). The prices have been unstable for a year, or more, but I found it odd
that in the 75-100 miles there is such a difference in the deltas.

I think the "statename"gasprices.com sites are owned or run by gasbuddy.
I've found on some you can specificy specific areas and then bookmark the
results to get the latest prices in those areas.

Maybe Chevron did, but around here (NJ) they still are around. And charge
receipts from gas stations run by Cumberland Farms in Mass get recorded as
Gulf, I believe (too lazy to check right now).

I recall that happening to the stations that got left out of the deal.
I suppose that the guys that operated or owned those particular stations
did not want to close shop. IIRC they were/are not actual Gulf stations
as we previously knew them.

Dunno if it's of any interest, but the cost of unleaded here
(Warrington, England) is US$2.06 per litre, whilst Diesel is US$2.19
per litre.

Crackers, isn't it?! There is one refinery in the south of England
that filed for bankruptcy last week - the price of Diesel rose as a
result!

Rental cars in Europe are also expensive, as are road tolls, where charged.

From what I understand though, the quality of the toll roads is very
high. (I could be wrong though, I've never driven on the continent!).

It varies, I think. The last I drove were in the summer of 2010, in
Italy in the area of Pisa-Firenze (Florence) and a bit south. In places
there was semiconfusing construction. Of course the quality of the roads
is generally fine. In my opinion driving in Italy is sort of "sporty"
but I am just fine with the Italian way of driving. In Paris is also
fine, but don't be in a hurry to get where you want to go. It's good to
be a little assertive and have good insurance. In the Netherlands, it's
generally much too crowded and under construction to be fun. And stay
out of the city centers!!

This is really odd. All of the stations here (SW Atlanta) just shot up while
the stations 75mi down I-85 didn't. It's usually about $.10/gal more
expensive here and that's about the difference in the state gasoline taxes
(little less, IIRC). It's not one station.

It is what the market will bare. Supply and demand have nothing to do
with the actual final pricing. The 40 cent higher stations tend to be
the ones with shops and in the more affluent part of town.

Well, there is that, but 10 cents difference for different sides of a

Absolutely, what the market will bare. One believes he can get more
because of greater in store selection, friendlier employees, what ever
reason. Like most anything else, except for Festool ;~), there is no
set pricing for gasoline. If one does not sell enough gasoline he will
lower the price. It could also be with regulations that it may be a PIA
to buy and sell and keep records of the gasoline and the owner/manager
may want more money for the effort. Price differences like those
mentioned have nothing to do with cost.

to be the ones with shops and in the more affluent part of town.

Well, there is that, but 10 cents difference for different sides of a
railroad crossing? Exxon (not Texaco as I said before) versus Gulf
in 07410

Absolutely, what the market will bare. One believes he can get more
because of greater in store selection, friendlier employees, what ever
reason. Like most anything else, except for Festool ;~), there is no
set pricing for gasoline. If one does not sell enough gasoline he
will lower the price. It could also be with regulations that it may
be a PIA to buy and sell and keep records of the gasoline and the
owner/manager may want more money for the effort. Price differences
like those mentioned have nothing to do with cost.

I go to the Gulf for gas, the Exxon for service.

Never driven in the Netherlands - only been to Amsterdam & Utrecht, so
public transport & shanks' pony were fine. The motorways beside the
railways all looked spiffy and new though. Have only driven from
Berlin to Munich actually; that's my entire driving experience on
mainland Europe! I seem to remember being surprised that the Autobahn
was 2 lanes only for most of the way.

Oops, that was yesterday.
I like this site. Enter your zip and look. It's nationwide, I
think.

Last week a weird thing happened with gas prices around here. I
live in Atlanta during the week and commute back home to E. Alabama
for the weekend. Gas prices up there jumped $.40 just before last
weekend but they didn't move a penny here (they'd both increased
about $.20 in the week or two before that). The prices have been
unstable for a year, or more, but I found it odd that in the 75-100
miles there is such a difference in the deltas.

We see price differences like that in Houston.

This is really odd. All of the stations here (SW Atlanta) just shot
up while the stations 75mi down I-85 didn't. It's usually about
$.10/gal more expensive here and that's about the difference in the
state gasoline taxes (little less, IIRC). It's not one station.

It is what the market will bare. Supply and demand have nothing to do
with the actual final pricing. The 40 cent higher stations tend to be
the ones with shops and in the more affluent part of town.

No, this difference is consistent across all brands. The $.40 is purely a
difference of 75mi.

Sure, but it's still $.40 different 75mi away (and across state lines). Two
weeks ago the difference was $.10, about the same as the difference in gas
tax.

So every one in one location is "on board". While price fixing is
illegal there is noting illegal with following your competitors lead.
That is an unspoken way of conducting business.

So in one location all decided to raise their prices "x" amount. If
they all do it you have to pay the price.

In Illinois the difference can result from having a county tax,
municpal tax and of course the state tax. And we as a state are pretty
much broke and in need of a credit counselor for our legistators.
