Actually a large part of the current financial difficulties in the state
are due to the proposition process, which is so-called "direct democracy",
starting with proposition 13 and continuing through hundreds of bond
propositions that disengeniously claim that the bond won't raise taxes
(even tho they are mostly paided from the general fund).

The rest is due to political inaction due to political parties on both
sides forgetting that compromise is the heart of politics.

One wonders if the state would have a better budgetary condition if
Pete Wilson hadn't reduced the vehicle license fee, which when it was
restored cause the Davis recall leading to the Schwartzenegger administration,
during which the budget just got worse.

AAMOF, it will be exactly the contrary ... denial in it's most egregious
form ... as we see here.

I disputed that "droves" of people were leaving california. And in
fact, droves of people aren't leaving california, the only cite that was
provided indicates that there were 200,000 people per year imbalance between
migrations from california and migrations to california within the US. In state of
35 million people, that's not a drove. The there was no evidence provided
as to _why_ that imbalance exists.

Nobody in california denies that there are currently budgetary problems.

Nobody in california particularly cares what you think.

California's state, California's problems. Butt out, or someome might
start spouting nonsense about the armpit of texas, houston.

You have said absolutely nothing to challenge my statement that NG is
not a REALISTIC alternative to gasoline-powered private vehicles.

Today? Not so much. Five years? Very possible.

The question is what IS a reasonable alternative to gasoline, not what
the future might hold in store. Eventually, science and technology will
make hydrogen-powered engines realistic.

Possibly - but personally I doubt it. IF hydrogen ever becomes a
viable fuel it will be in fuel cells, not infernal combustion engines.

I didn't say hydrogen would be burned in an internal combustion engine.
I think its a matter of when, not if. Maybe it will be fuel cells,
maybe it will be a turbine engine. Shoot, maybe it'll be a hydrogen
fueled steam engine. No telling how far away "when" is. It could be
five years down the road, or a hundred years away.

Eventually, science and
technology will make economical and efficient solar cells that will
power vehicles electrically (with efficient battery backup for when the
sun isn't shining).

Perhaps hybrid battery/ultracap combinations.

Those will be better alternatives than any fossil
fuel. But in the here and now, hydrogen and solar panels are not
realistic alternatives to gasoline. In the here and now, neither is
natural gas.

It's just not that attractive. More likely is that somebody will come
up with an economically competitive method of making gasoline and diesel
from natural gas or coal.

That may happen, but when? NG is here now.

As for the economics, the states will try to get taxes, just as they
plan to with electrics. That does not mean it will be as costly as
gasoline.

I don't know that is will ever become a popular and viable fuel, but
it is far too soon to tell. The naysayers are too quick to push it
aside without a long term test.

Looks like natural gas engine add on packages are coming down in price
for even smaller (FoMoCo F-250) trucks to somewhere areund $10K-$12K.

Put 500,000 miles on and it pays for itself.

I don't think so. Even the gas company in my area stopped running NG
vehicles over 10 years ago.

What were the prices for diesel and natural gas 10 years ago?

Were you thinking about global warning back then?

It has always been a matter of marketing and taxation policies. In
Europe there has always been a market, thanks to relatively plentiful
NG/CNG/LPG, whatever you want to name it, and taxation of engines
(different tax rates for different fuels and cars with different
engines). Example of the tax policies: A car equipped for diesel or NG
would be taxed higher in registration fees, but the tax on the fuel would
be lower than for gasoline. That makes it more economical for high
mileage use to go for those "alternative" fuels than for the Sunday
driver.

Er, no.

Virtually all forms of "alternate" energy are more expensive or
significantly less convenient. For example, consider a car you might own
that propels itself via energy stored in a large rotating drum. There are no
re-spin stations on any interstate highway in the country, so you can't
stray too far from your garage. Or you'd have to pull over and break out the
crank.

Now EXTERNAL combustion engines, i.e., steam driven, are more efficient than
internal combustion. But a steam-powered auto would suffer the same
convenience problem as befo There just are no coal-refilling stations on
our highways.

No, unless somebody comes up with a car that can miracle itself down the
road, gasoline is our next best alternative.

Of course that gasoline buck is subsidized in many ways, including oil
depletion allowances, insufficient accounting of environmental
consequences etc, etc. Somehow reminiscent of the marketing ploys that
(at the time, probably economically justifiably) imposed AC rather than
DC electricity distribution.
Oh, yeah - How many of your tools are available with gas tanks rather
than batteries or cords?

With all due respect, it's a thermal fact, Han ... the perceived
problems are simply not solved with electricity/batteries, just shifted,
due to the fact that almost all electricity is generated from fossil fuels.

Factor in electrical transmissions losses and electricity "bang for the
buck" becomes even more dubious as a fuel source replacement for
gasoline for the foreseeable future.

Reminds me of Paul Harvey's "the rest of the story". The average
American is only told what the current political, agendized viewpoint
wants them to hear.

Anyone grounded in science should be able to dig a bit deeper for "the
rest of the story".

That part I understand, Karl. DC might prove better than AC at those
types of losses. For gasoline, costs are in transport and refining, then
in the startup of engines and idling, plus the noxious fumes' costs.
Much of that disappears in the economiccs of scale for electricity. Big
improvements are coming for electricity in transmission, storage and
generation.

What and when? What ever it is, I don't think it will involve DC
transmission. Maybe someone is dusting off Tesla's notes?

product

My chain saw, weed-eater, leaf blower, snow blower, and lawn mower.

Also gasoline powered augers (drills) are used in the local
sugar-bushes for tapping, and gasoline concrete saws, core drills, and
hedge trimmers are quite common-place.

That's just for starters.

Actually if you consider the nasty electric batteries and the cost to
dispose of the when spent you see the Hummer as more of a clean running
screaming machine.

Er, no.

No, unless somebody comes up with a car that can miracle itself
down the road, gasoline is our next best alternative.

And, far away, the best energy bang for the buck per unit volume ...
all other current alternatives, particularly electric, are
politically driven (npi) Bull****, with more downsides than a
waterfall.

Of course that gasoline buck is subsidized in many ways, including
oil depletion allowances, insufficient accounting of environmental
consequences etc, etc. Somehow reminiscent of the marketing ploys
that (at the time, probably economically justifiably) imposed AC
rather than DC electricity distribution.
Oh, yeah - How many of your tools are available with gas tanks rather
than batteries or cords?

With all due respect, it's a thermal fact, Han ... the perceived
problems are simply not solved with electricity/batteries, just
shifted, due to the fact that almost all electricity is generated from
fossil fuels.

Factor in electrical transmissions losses and electricity "bang for
the buck" becomes even more dubious as a fuel source replacement for
gasoline for the foreseeable future.

Reminds me of Paul Harvey's "the rest of the story". The average
American is only told what the current political, agendized viewpoint
wants them to hear.

Anyone grounded in science should be able to dig a bit deeper for "the

Much of that disappears in the economiccs of scale for electricity. Big
improvements are coming for electricity in transmission, storage and
generation.

Whatever the complaints, it's going to arrive soon, maybe kicking and
screaming, but it *is* coming. And, they're working on the speed of a
recharge too. That's just around the corner.

It's sad that it's "government this, government that" ... I've yet to
see a corner gas station put in by any government.
