Filled the TACO yesterday for $2.97/gal [Chevron - FM529 and Eldridge].
Diesel for the Silverado keeps hanging between $3.65/gal. and $3.79/gal.
I've always theorized that diesel competes with home heating oil this time
of year.
I hit a personal high week before last with a $120.00 fill-up [diesel].
Oh, well.

Since you filter me you won't see this reply; however, have you
noticed the price of anything that has energy as a major cost
component in the last year?

OPEC has you by the short and curlys, whether you recognize it or not.

Alternate energy anybody?

No, I did not miss it. You want to pay less for more. So far, oil IS
the least expensive energy source for the masses. And location does
have something to do with it. I am paying 10% less than you for a
"premium brand" gasoline.

Oil prices go up, gasoline goes down. Explain how OPEC controls local
market prices of gasoline. The refineries and their relationship with
the media control the prices.

If you want to test the location theory, go to gasbuddy.com and check the
prices for Chicago, Springfield, and St. Louis. (Or Mt. Vernon or Marion
if you want to stay in IL.)

It's local taxes, the "added cost" of "special" blends and a bunch of
other external factors that make sometimes a $.30/gallon difference.

You mean addiction to posting gas prices in a woodworking newsgroup?

Just a follow up to your addiction theory. Regardless of what energy
source we use we are going to need massive amounts of it. What ever the
source there will be persons or nations controlling the cost, just like
now". It will only be a different source. If producers cannot control
the cost, they simply will not develop the alternative.

Remember when you bitched about $0.99/gal gas?

I was working the pumps and service bay (my second job as an ase
certified technician) when the price topped a dollar. You'd think we
killed a child if we spilled a drop or two on the ground! It was so
funny. I was working a Mobil station in Prairie Village , Kansas that
was used to peddling 130,000 gallons a month, when the crunch came, we
were rationed to 22,000 a month. I got to experience all kinds of blue
hairs telling me why THEY should be served gas during the off hours....
I was 20-21 years old and didn't give a big rats ass about their blue
hair or the fact that their Buicks and Caddletrucks were on 3/4 tank
because they couldn't be bothered to get in line in time with the rest
of the peons in town. I laughed for months at those assholes.

Sure, I remember bitching at $.99 gas. I was making about 20% of what I'm
making now, too.

I've stayed out of this one, but have y'all read the latest. We imported
roughly 750 million barrels of crude in the 1st 10 months of 2011. We
exported roughly 850 million barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

That's right - the US is an oil exporter! In fact, according to the
article I read, oil was the US's top export in 2011!

Even without considering any losses in refining, the oil companies are
not only exporting everything they've imported, but products made from
some of our local crude as well.

Why? Because they can make more money selling the stuff overseas.

Now you know why you're being screwed.

BTW, what's all this happy horse**** about we need to develop "energy
independence"?

Lets just say that the media leads the sheep to the slaughter house. The
media prepares the gullible public for a price hike and then the oil
companies take advantage of the situation.

Petroleum products with Gulf water mixed in probably sells cheap though.

The point is that since we are a net exporter, we actually *have* oil
independence. All we have to do is keep the oil companies from shipping
our oil overseas.

Do you know why they ship our light crude overseas? Because the oil
companies, in their infinite wisdom, no longer build refineries here
which can process our heavier, more sour types of oil. We use the
light sweet and sell the rest. And the prices stay high because said
oil companies, who are rolling in double digit windfall profits, won't
build any more refineries of any type, bottlenecking the flow of
gasoline. That and the futures market and continual resale of oil on
paper until the profits are made by all participating companies.

We use the light
sweet and sell the rest. And the prices stay high because said oil
companies, who are rolling in double digit windfall profits, won't build
any more refineries of any type, bottlenecking the flow of gasoline.
That and the futures market and continual resale of oil on paper until
the profits are made by all participating companies.

No argument from me. Now what do we do about it? Or rather, what should
we do about it - actually getting it done may be impossible.

Since I doubt my ability to appeal to the consciences of the oil
executives, my answer is some kind of legal prohibition on the export of
strategic resources. I believe there is, or was, some such regulation on
some substances - just add oil and oil products to the list.
