Then there is Tai Chi...which is very very good and so simple that geriatrics can do it. Probably no good for his leg/lower back problems. I'm doing Tai Chi now and it's tough on my knees. Walking is not really an option. I can't do more than 300 yards. without my
crutches. Of course I guess I could maybe double that with the crutches. It's not the weight that bothers me (though it doesn't help) it's the nerve deficit and falling. It hurts hitting the ground from that high up. I thought about a bicycle but one reason I sold my Harley was I got spasms and fell over at a stop sign once. I was afraid it would happen while I was going down the road at 70mph. Swimming would probably work Ok, we bought one of those 20'x4' donut pools we're putting up. but that's very seasonal where we live up in the mountains. It'll probably be another month before I can use it. The nearest public all-season pool is 80 mi. Hell, it's 80mi to McD's, PizzaHut, even a Traffic light or 4-way stop. I am going to try out an "Air-Walker" that a friend has. I can hang onto it while I'm using it and I don't have the stepping motion, more like a swinging motion. I looked at the 5BX sites and a couple of yoga sites. I'll give them a try. I just got one of those big rubber bands from the orthopedist. I can do that stuff sitting down. Thanks for the ideas. madhat -- Some people will tell you that slow is good...and it may be, on some days...but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I've always believed this, in spite of the trouble it's caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. I was about 270 , 8 1/2 years ago before I became pretty much disabled and could not get my usual exercise. I used to walk/jog 6mi a day and work the weight machine a couple of times a week. Now I'm pretty much out of that. It's the sh_ts living in mountains and Oregon and not being able to go hunting and fishing anymore. Any way if anyone knows any good lo-impact, not to physical exercise for a crippled up old fat guy, feel free to contribute. Thanks, madhat Swimming, but that requires access to a suitable body of water. My Grandma (88 years old, and sharp as a tack) swims 30 minutes daily. She can't walk for exercise anymore because of trouble with her feet and ankles. Grandma's condo building has an indoor pool. My late Grandfather took up running at age 60, after he retired. He ran the New York Marathon at age 72. He kept running until Alzheimer's took the use of his legs at age 83. He didn't know who or where he was, but he insisted on running every day, and was quite upset when he couldn't do it any more. The physical therapists at the nursing home had a hard time keeping up with him. You should consult your physician before taking up any kind of exercise. -- Ron DeBlock N2JSO 20 years on Usenet! Gunner writes: Is there any inexpensive fireproofing chemicals that can be applied to a pair of pants for example..that wont give you cancer or make your pecker fall off? When I was a kid there was a formula for some homemade stuff that had Borax in it-- we tested it on some scrap cloth and it seemed to work reasonably well (chars but won't sustain a flame on its own). A Google search turned up a few variations on this theme. Borax is considered non-toxic but may be a skin irritant, depending on the concentration. It's water soluable so it will wash out, but if you only wear it for welding it might be worth re-treating each time (Borax is relatively cheap). Example: http://ocw.mit.edu/NR/rdonlyres/Music-and-Theater-Arts/21M-735Spring2004/77C424A5-50DD-4F58-8DB6-5ECBFEF7C258/0/flameretar.pdf (PDF file) Formula 1: Borax - 6 parts, 6 lbs, Boric acid - 5 parts, 5 lbs, Water - 100 parts, 12 gallons. Steep fabric in cool solution until impregnated. Heavy applications by spray or brush are usually reasonably effective. Repeat if necessary. This is good for theater scenery fabric, and recommended for rayon and natural fabrics. Yields a 8 - 12 % weighting. Formula 2: Borax - 7 parts, 7 lbs, Boric acid - 3 parts, 3 lbs, Water - 100 parts, 12 gallons. Water can be varied according to absorptive capacity of fabric. For rayon and sheer fabrics, these same amounts of borax and boric acid can be used with 17 gallons of water. Hand-wring for an 8 - 10% weighting on fabric. Flexibility and softness will be retained without dustiness, and also microorganism growth is prevented. |

Best exercise for you is walking -- one thing (from experience) that can help .. well two things - back exercises AND try wearing a daypack (or backpack) with some weight in it to sort of "counterbalance" the pot. I myself used to have a massive chest - as I get older, I still have it ... just about a foot lower ;-) You don't say where you live in Oregon, but if you can get access to water (pool, pond (depending on what part of the country) etc.), swimming works very well and takes the load off your back. (Oregon has a southern warm part and a northern cold part) ;-) mikey |

As Ive stated before, Im an ameatur student of military history and the geopolitical causes and effects and I for the most part..agree with what we are doing in the ME. Frankly..the only fault I can find with Bush & Co. of any import is their stance on illegal immigration. What you consider to be dada "DA TRUTH" oooooommm...is no more and no less colored by your dislike of the man, the fact that Dems are an ever increasing cranky and whining minority and your generic DNC dislike of conservativism in general. Asking the average Liberal about this administration evokes pretty much the same kneejerk reaction, and with as much validity, as asking any Nazi party official about the Jews. Your opinion is noted again and again. As is mine. I'm on the east side, in the mountains. The nearest anything from here is
about 80 mi away (McDs, Safeway, movie, even a traffic light.) I do have one of those 20'x4' donut pools but it will still be another 2 weeks to a month before we can use it. Unless I can figure out how to build a heater. Then we can't really use it after labor day, too cold. The terrain here is all uphill even when your going downhill. I can't even get around my place without my crutches or my Honda 90 trailbike (no wise cracks). Of course it looks like I have a rollerblade stuck you know where. A friend had some trial backsurgery last year and it worked great. I had hi-hopes for that. Then another friend had the same surgery and it did not work for him, so I'm not going to take the chance. I already have enough problems without to them. Everyone have a good day. This is the first sunshine we've had since the first of the week. Bob -- Some people will tell you that slow is good...and it may be, on some days...but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I've always believed this, in spite of the trouble it's caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba...." Hunter S. Thompson |

Recently, I remarked that I was repairing some Levis which had a hol other pairs which are in the same condition, and, at forty dollars a pair, I guess I will be saving myself more than a hundred dollars here. IMHO Levis are overpriced and, with their stone-washed process, don't last. I now buy Key jeans....no stone washed crap and they are better than Levis or those cowboy Wranglers.. You need to buy the next size up because they shrink like the 'original' Levis did back when they were affordable. With my big butt and long legs I would have to pay $50 or so for Levis... Key jeans are made in central and south America probably the same factory as Levi's... Here is one place you used to be able to get them. Right now their site only shows carpenter jeans... http://www.bootcity.net/key/4874.48%20Jeans%20.htm Larry -- Columbia, MO www.llhote.com I've had it with these Levis now. I just put the fourth patch on the first pair, and they're all ready for the fifth patch now. Today I'm going to purchase a pattern for some bluejeans, so I can pick out the material myself, rather than having to settle for whatever the manufacturer wants to use. I never used a sewing machine before, but I'm sure that my mother won't mind loaning me hers. I might as well make myself a blue denim jacket also while I'm at it. Mike Mandaville Austin, Texas |

You either love or hate those progressive lenses and I'm definitely in the 'hate' class. I have work glasses, hard bifocals with the top good out to about 30' and in to about 2' feet, the bottom bifocal lens is good from 1' to 2', then I go to magnifying glass, loupe and stereo microscope in that order. I have night driving glasses that the opto made as I directed, sweet spot at about 200 feet and still crystal-clear at infinity with my eyes fully dark-adapted. It was remarkable to go out at night and see pinpoints for stars instead of blobs. The opto is going to write a paper for a journal about my night driving glasses. But my arms are still good. |
