Really?

Yes, really.

Video it on my phone

Yes,

and email them the video or link to it?

Can be difficult to work out who sent it without opening it, stupid.

Which is part of the irony of course, being sent a
bit of folded cardboard from someone who could
easier send a personal email or call the phone?

No part.

Are there people who send xmas [xmyth] cards without personalised envelopes that have the sender's address printed on the flap?

Owain

I got one this year with a blank envelope AND card. The wit that gave me it said that I might prefer it blank so I could reuse it!

Presumably strangers you mean, people you haven't already exchanged email
addresses with? I'm hardly likely to bother to send such a video to an
older person who doesn't have email.

My point is that *real friends* accept and understand when we say we
prefer not to receive cards (suggesting they give that cost to charity)
that they acknowledge such and don't send a card.

We used to get a card addressed to people we didn't know but it was not
any of the previous occupiers of that address or the name of anyone
local. The writing was all spidery so it was probably someone old and now
they have stopped so ... ;-(

We also sometimes get a card from what I believe might be my 'cousins'
but I don't know them or them us obviously (they address it to Tim and my
first wife's name from 30 years ago). What's the point (for them)?

Basically, (IMHO of course g) it's a pointless and disgusting waste of
the worlds resources and a financial burden on those who often can't
afford it (postage and cards). If you actually *want* to keep in touch
with someone, do so (visit, letter, email, social media, telephone call)
and not just once a year?

Cheers, T i m

It's a way to re-establish a bit of a social link with folk you're otherwise falling out of touch with.
Who in the UK can't afford xmas cards? It's not as if they're compulsory anyway.

Yup, I have a couple of those and they are good. Only thing is none of

Although perhaps that is just down to their lack of spanners ;-)

My recent plumbing experiences point towards a need for robust but thin

I was more intrigued how you would know where to send the video if you
have destroyed the card before opening it and hence don't know who sent
it...

I really meant that 'when it wasn't obvious where the card came from
because of the handwriting or because it was given to another family
member to give to me', I would open it to see if it was from, close it
again and then shred / video it.

With her Mum it took her to tear it in half in front of her (unopened)
before she got what we were asking (sounds harsh but we had asked
often enough and that manage to do the trick).

Because neither of us are religious, neither of us send / hand Xmyth
cards to anyone because why would we? Just in the same way we wouldn't
actively get involved in any other religious / other 'tradition /
ceremony if it wasn't a natural part of our lives.

'We don't do Christmas' is generally all it needs for most people but
for others, it takes a bit more.

Like, if we go somewhere where they are aware we 'Don't do Christmas'
and so know they won't get a card or presents, how do they think it
makes us feel when they then give us a card or present? They say they
are happy to give without receiving (and I get that in general) but at
Xmas the 'tradition' is 'exchanging' gifts?

Why is it assumed that we would celebrate Xmas but not Duvali,

Car accessory places stock such spanners intended for fan belt nuts or something similar. They fit compression nuts. Everyone warns that stamped spanners are not robust, but IME with those ones they're plenty robust for plumbing.

Aldi has a patchy selection of diy stuff in if you're looking for pressies, but having had yet another one with 2 faults my opinion of their power tools is 'unreliable'.

Indeed! :-D:-D

All it needs is a card with something inside it to shag a shredder.

'All it needs' is for people to stop being so f-in selfish and listen to
our polite (initially) request? Why would you waste the time and money
doing something where the recipient had explicitly requested you didn't
and expressed the view that 1) they didn't want it and 2) that the money
spent (could be) be put to a positive cause?

Any card containing anything that was likely to shag our shredder (that
also shreds CD's) would likely be opened to see what it might contain.

Post your physical address we can send diy xmyth letterbombs that
will blow your shredder and you to bits when you try shredding them.

Indeed it sounds twisted and bitter, and completely lacking in human
empathy, or any trace of civility.

Because neither of us are religious, neither of us send / hand Xmyth
cards to anyone because why would we?

Perhaps because its a time of year when others are more willing to reach
out and connect with old friends and acquaintances, it helps them break
down barriers, and overcome fear of rejection for a while. Most people
will respond in kind even if they personally have no religious faith,
and despise the whole commercial aspect of Christmas - even if only for
the sake of other people's feelings.

Just in the same way we wouldn't
actively get involved in any other religious / other 'tradition /
ceremony if it wasn't a natural part of our lives.

Bet you don't get invited to many weddings, christenings etc then!

'We don't do Christmas' is generally all it needs for most people but
for others, it takes a bit more.

Yup it takes you being the bigger man, sucking it up and biting your
tongue. Why burn bridges and go out of your way to hurt other people's
feelings, when there is no benefit to anyone?

Like, if we go somewhere where they are aware we 'Don't do Christmas'
and so know they won't get a card or presents, how do they think it
makes us feel when they then give us a card or present?

For some there is pleasure (or at lease an escape for any feelings of
guilt or failing to live up to expectation) in giving without any
expectation of reward.

They say they
are happy to give without receiving (and I get that in general) but at
Xmas the 'tradition' is 'exchanging' gifts?

You seem keen to have them accept you don't do Christmas, so perhaps its
not unfair to accept their statement that they feel better giving
something.

Why is it assumed that we would celebrate Xmas but not Duvali,
Hanukkah or Imbolc?

Perhaps because Christmas is now far broader and wider than a just
religious feast. Many will find some part they can partake and enjoy
like time off work, a good **** up, or to enjoy seasonal food treats,
even if not many of the other parts.

But you do all this Xmyth stuff so you must be an active Christian no?

Nope. I'm a heathen and have always been into the
xmyth food and the holiday between xmyth and new
year and the decent ****up we always had a work etc.

And we have enough of a clue to not have
ours in the middle of the ****ing winter too.

So what do you celebrate in the middle of winter?

the daylight hours are getting longer

A really decent set of screwdrivers never goes amiss. Something like Wera.
Not a set with every conceivable size - just the common ones.

How many sets of screwdrivers can you get through in a year?

;-) Ask next year and I'll try and come up with a different suggestion.

A PZ2 replacement wound suit me.

They do not last a year.

Do you have "Nudy Wednesday" too?

No? Would you recommend that we do?

Having watched Royston Vasey I reckon it would suit your somewhat
Â* hysterical mindset quite well :-)

Ah, not really watched any of that because it (ironically) seemed as
weird as you do! ;-)

If you haven't watched any if it how would you know?

Sending bits of folded cardboard to your *friends*. Weird ...

but sending your "friends" videos of you shredding their unopened
Â* cards is just so you Timbo!

Ho ho ho
;-)

Put a bit of catenary wire in the card and there would be a video of the
shredder breaking down.

It can shred best wishes from friends but not catenary wire

A small sheet of ballistic nylon padding could be interesting...

Â*Â*I've just watched the latest Skillbuilder video where Bisby uses a
split ring spanner for compression joints, looks a lot easier than a
Stilson.
Â*Like this:

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Han...+Tools/sd210/S
plit+Ring+Compression+Fitting+Spanner/p23418

Yup, I have a couple of those and they are good. Only thing is none of
the folks I am getting presents for are into plumbing.

Although perhaps that is just down to their lack of spanners ;-)

My recent plumbing experiences point towards a need for robust but thin
open ended spanners.

What like these:

http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php/...eelSpanner.jpg

Yup, an essential part of a plumbing kit, for the odd occasion nothing
else will fit, but not at all comfortable or pleasant to use IME.

I've found mine very useful for plumbing. They get in places where there isn't room for the usual thick ones. And it is what was asked for.

Between losing them or vaporising them, I would imagine your apprentices
get through quite a few.

If you let them have screwdrivers, that is.

For the final fix on electrics, I like to have decent screwdrivers of the
right size in decent condition. All too often I see terminals not
correctly tightened and chewed up screws. Both more likely with a wrong or
worn screwdriver.

Normal people who send Xmas cards put their names inside the Xmas card.

It's a way to re-establish a bit of a social link with folk you're
otherwise falling out of touch with.
Who in the UK can't afford xmas cards? It's not as if they're
compulsory anyway.

Yes. I have staff who send cards:-) This years cheap offering from China
has had to be embellished with glue and glitter which is now firmly
attached to all our kitchen surfaces.

I suppose one should admire a desire to maintain contact with college
friends of 53 years back but generally my views align with Tim.

Have you tried a diamond coated Wera? Just for screws. Use the

In general, my neighbours are just fine. Certainly in terms of nodding a
hello when you see them in the street. Or passing the time of day when not
in a rush.

One couple, a few doors away, are rather standoffish. Lots of kids too. If
you say hello when passing them, it seems to be an effort to return the
greeting. Which is odd as they socialise with other families.

Each year, I get an Xmas card from them. With lots of kisses. Nowt as
strange as folk.

I dunno where the nearest cash and carry is. But several Lidl nearby. As
he'd have had to have driven to the Tesco - he couldn't have carried all
that water back on foot.

I don't think I've ever seen anything in Bookers that even competed with retail prices. Why anyone buys there I can hardly imagine. Lidl sense?
