limited access road... straight arrow at 100MPH.... I'm not exactly
inexperienced... drive the autobahn regularly at 135MPH.

In fact we discussed why this hard-on about speed in America ;-)

I qualified for "driver school", so no fine, just $100 for the school.
Now, in Arizona, you can do "driver school" on the web :-)

Really? We have traffic here around the flag pole the likes of which
only shows up in your sun soaked nightmares. And yet there is still
some cretin that feels the need to go zipping through the congestion
at 80 MPH in his BMW, Lexus, or Lincoln Navigator. Those little cafe
racers, that the stupid kids seem to favor, regularly go buzzing by at
over 100MPH. Serious accidents are an hourly occurrence around the
beltway, and most appear to be speed related.

So please tell me again why you feel these idiots should be allowed
to drive any speed they please! This isn't a desert.

The only thing they missed in upping the fine is there should be mandatory

I certainly don't want to dissuade your decision to *not* visit the most
beautiful state in America. But is it too much to ask of your small
brain of ever diminishing capacity to note that under the new Virginia
law the civil fees are charged only to Virginia residents and not
out-of-staters? As for the 20MPH over posted limit, that has always been
one of many criteria for reckless driving, a Class I misdemeanor
punishable by up to $2500 fine and/or one year in jail. It is actually
20MPH over posted speed except for 35MPH zones where it is 25MPH over,
and 80MPH for any posted speed limit.

And I did manage to earn a ticket on my bicycle. Construction zone in
Germany, 20km/h limit, in a hurry, threw it in 10th gear, passed several
cars, realized way too late that one of them had a blue hump on top of
it. A stern voice sounded via its speaker: "Steer to the curb and stop
NOW!". Got clocked at 35km/h and had to pay up right then and there. He
said they had a radar posted at the entrance of the roadworks and it was
radioed to them, and that he was sure I'd been way over 40km/h by the
time I passed him so I shouldn't complain. I didn't complain.

Warner one night... Told the cop straight up I was speeding. He was
surprised I hadn't been drinking or doing drugs. He did ask if I was racing
the BMW behind me, which was full of my buddies and yes I was... Told him
everything. including how 3 of the 4 in the BMW were drunk as lords. Let me
go with a yelling (real deal yelling) and no ticket.... that was back in the
mid 80's.....

I always drive at a speed that I feel is safe. This is usually slightly
in excess of the speed limit, sometimes slower, and sometimes _way_
higher. If you find me _really_ exceeding the speed limit it'll be when
there's no one in front of me, I'm alert, I can see for miles, and
there's no nearby schools.

I haven't gotten a ticket in years; when I have been pulled over I've
been able to point out the visibility and emptiness, and have gotten off
with warnings.

Ahh - The German Police: "Befehl ist Befehl", no matter is too trivial for
paperwork ;-).

If you pop a tire on the Autobahn and is seen they *will* book you for "driving
with an inadequate maintained vehicle" and "stopping on the autobahn" (and they
will also check if you got spare bulbs, first-aid kit, warning triangle and that
they are of the approved type)!

decelerated so fast the radar couldn't read my speed properly ;-)


And I did manage to earn a ticket on my bicycle. Construction zone in
Germany, 20km/h limit, in a hurry, threw it in 10th gear, passed several
cars, realized way too late that one of them had a blue hump on top of
it. A stern voice sounded via its speaker: "Steer to the curb and stop
NOW!". Got clocked at 35km/h and had to pay up right then and there. He
said they had a radar posted at the entrance of the roadworks and it was
radioed to them, and that he was sure I'd been way over 40km/h by the
time I passed him so I shouldn't complain. I didn't complain.



Ahh - The German Police: "Befehl ist Befehl", no matter is too trivial for
paperwork ;-).

If you pop a tire on the Autobahn and is seen they *will* book you for "driving
with an inadequate maintained vehicle" and "stopping on the autobahn" (and they
will also check if you got spare bulbs, first-aid kit, warning triangle and that
they are of the approved type)!


Nah, they aren't that bad. If a tire blows I've actually seen them
helping get the spare on.

But yes, they would cite you if a lamp is out and you don't have a spare
bulb kit. The first-aid kit must contain Aids gloves, at least that used
to be the rule when I lived in Germany. I wish a first-aid kit was
mandatory in the US as well. I have used mine at times, and never on
anyone in my car.

If your tire is "popped" by a road hazard, they should not be allowed to

I had four brand new (two days old) Goodyear steel radials when, on an
on ramp in Denver, a bolt (3/8-16 x 1.75") I encountered with my front
tire flew into my back tire. It literally entered the tire, it was
moving so fast. Instant blowout. My vehicle was properly maintained,
and I would never limp on a blown tire as vehicle damage could result, so
I would pull over and stop to fix it or be towed in any and all cases.

That's some racket those cops in Germany got going there.

All of those coastal southern states make much of their income from
traffic fines. Florida is particularly noted, though, IIRC, they got
busted by the Feds some years back for using speed traps.

From what I saw, I-77 goes through West Virginia.

There was one time, we were coming back from the beach and traveling
through this small, very poor, southern town in the south-eastern part
of North Carolina. The road went from 55 to 35 as you came into the
town, of course, we slowed down. Then along comes this fire red card
with Ohio tags, driven some punk kid with a shaved head, leaning over
into the passenger seat while driving - going probably a good 60 through
the 35 zone. Of course there was a cop sitting in a plaza in the middle
of town. Well, on came the lights and the cop took off - though it took
him a good 4-5 miles to catch up with the kid. To this day, I wonder if
he enjoyed his stay in the county Hilton. I bet it gave him a new
appreciation for "Southern Hospitality".

From what I saw, I-77 goes through West Virginia.
It goes through both states. There is about a 60 mile stretch through
the western portion of Virginia that crosses I81. About half of it is
joined up with I81, which might make identifying it on a map more
difficult. It only takes about 60-70 minutes to travel through the VA
portion, but takes about 2.5 - 3 hours to get through it in West Virginia.

Yes, the original thread is about new legislation that went into effect
on 7/1 and establishes "civil remedial" fees over and above the existing
fines for traffic law violations. The fees are payable to the state DMV
and not the courts. Out-of-state traffic law violators will not be
charged these fees. Only Virginia residents will be charged the fees. It
is not enough for the legislation to simply state that additional fees
will be charged, they must enact a schedule of specific fees charged for
each type of traffic violation. The legislation therefore goes through
each and every traffic law offense under the existing Title 46 ( or
whatever it is) in the Virginia code and specifies an exact amount for
each offense.
Many people have mental process problems and have become outraged and/or
confused by the news of this legislation. The most common
misunderstandings a
1) total ignorance of basic government function and the separation of
executive and judicial branches,
2) misunderstanding of the difference between fees and fines,
3) failure to note that only Virginia residents are charged the fees,
4) ignorance of the distinction between minor traffic violations,
misdemeanors, and felony grade offenses, and that the fees are assigned
to misdemeanors and felonies only,
5) ignorance of the Virginia code,
6) belief that the fee schedule on the existing traffic law title
offenses is the creation of an entirely new set of traffic offenses.
And the list goes on and on...I just don't know that it can be put more
simply.

My other vehicles, '64 Dodge Dart, '67 Cougar, '67 (IIRC) Toyota
Corolla, free '68 T-Bird at Philco-Ford, '77 LTD, '77 280Z, '83 280ZX,
'84 Maxima, '96 Q45, '01 Frontier, '05 Q45

Plus the kids shared a variety of old heavy Fords while they learned
to drive, then various Nissan vehicles. All descendants have Nissan
products now, except one daughter-in-law has a Ford Explorer, and one
granddaughter a new Yaris.
