Why don't you just run right over there and become a Soviet journalist

Around here (Houston) the favorite time for making quotas seems to be
the beginning of the month. Speed traps seem real popular at the first
of the month. Then after about the 20th, you almost never see them
pulling anyone over.

Geography is only part of the reason for representatives. The representative
is also there to be a full time student and arbitrator of the nuances of governing
the people. He is there to employ a staff of experts on a wide variety of subjects
that affect governance. It is their full time job so it doesn't have to be your
full time job.

If the people are to become competent experts on all of the finer details of governing,
they are going to have to have access to the information necessary to make these
decisions, and they are going to have to spend a great deal of time studying and
understanding this information down to the tiniest detail. In order to be a fair
representation, they will have to study *all* the details... that is clearly impossible.
No one's life is that big, and all encompassing.

Further, the "will" of the people will be profoundly influenced by the authors of
the sources of information available to the people. News organs will become the
true holders of power in such a representativeless government. They will tell you
what is important, and how you should think about that subject. From there, it will
all be a popularity contest.

Representativeless government? No thanks!

I think it's only those states dominated by Democrats... thus
controlled by those that think the government knows more about how to
run your life that you do.

It isn't just the Democrats, Republicans are just as bad. Quite
frankly, the whole damned system has gone to hell and needs to be
replaced. Too many corrupt politicians are in bed with too many corrupt
businesses that are willing to sell out everyones future for their
immediate gratification.

I think it is time for a change. The concept of having to elect a
representative to go travel to a meeting location to represent 'your'
interests has out lived its usefulness. Technological advances are
allowing for new possibilities as instant communication, even globally,
is now a reality.

A large part of the problem is getting the masses, who are largely
highly uneducated to be both able and willing to take on a responsible
role. Granted this is a lot of the problem today and it looks like it
is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

For those who would say that it will never change: I am sure that a lot
of the idiots in power in various times and places throughout history
thought the same thing, at least until their head was chopped off.

I almost made a statement about that, too and I often think / wonder
about that. The concept of everyone is equal doesn't work. Communism
proves that and the current system in the USA is proving that, in a
different manner. Lets face it, everyone is not equal. Some contribute
a lot more than others, some have a lot more responsibility than others,
and so forth - and the system should reflect that. At the same time,
the guy cleaning the toilets and sweeping the floor at the work place is
just as important to the healthy functioning of the business as the guy
making the "big" decisions. Ideally, the market system would reward
these individuals appropriately and someone fulfilling the job would be
able to maintain a living on it - one that doesn't require living in
squalor or poverty. Unfortunately, the present system is much less than
ideal.

Not equal in performance, of course. But everyone is equal in value.
Everyone has (or is supposed to have) equal _FREEDOM_ to pursue happiness
on his or her own terms.

Everyone has an equal right to Life
Everyone has an equal right to Liberty
Everyone has an equal right to be secure in their person and possessions.

The United States is the first place to have actually codified those
rights, in order to protect them from coercive, intrusive, rapacious
governemnt.

But nobody has a right to be paid from the fruits of another's labor,
which is what the socialists/communists think that "peple are equal"
means. It doesn't mean everybody should be the same.

And, for the record, the neocons and nazis want everybody the same, just
like the socialists and communists - The two wings aren't actually all
that different: in fact, nazi is the acronym for "national socialists" in
German.

The left wing wants to take away your money and give it to poor people,
while distracting you with sex and drugs.

The right wing wants to take away your money and give it to rich people,
while distracting you with wars and toys and religion and outright
oppression.

I guess the left wing tries to do their own version of oppression with all
that "political correctness" crap.

But it's like asking, "Would you rather be hanged or shot?" As for me,
give me Liberty or give me Death.

Find out where _YOU_ stand:

Cheers!

There is actually scientific basis for just this thing:

"Freeloaders can live on the fruits of the cooperation of others, but
their selfishness can have long-term consequences, reports an
evolutionary biologist from The University of Texas at Austin in a new
study."

And this explains *exactly* what is going on in America today: total and
possibly irreversible decline.
