My PC, running Windows 7, suddenly is offering me a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it comes out. I understand from Googling it, they are trying to get over the bad publicity with Windows 8.

I know it's not released yet but does anyone have any views on it. I like Windows 7 and don't want to change to something I will hate. But it might keep my PC going longer.

My other concern is whether my hardware will be up to running it.

Thanks

I think they want to get as many people onto Windows 10 as possible.
I've think they probably make relatively little money from people buying
upgrades to older versions (as opposed to getting a new version with a
new computer) and there are benefits to MS in having as many users as
possible on Win10.

I know it's not released yet but does anyone have any views on it.

I quite like it (I've been running the beta here on a laptop). It works
better as a desktop OS than Win8 I think.

But it might keep my PC going longer.

You could try it out by dual booting into it (the beta isn't quite at
the RC stage yet, but it's pretty much there I think.)

My other concern is whether my hardware will be up to running it.

This old Core 2 Duo - 4GB Ram laptop runs it just as well as Win7. The
only issue I had was the audio driver on the laptop wasn't in Win10 at
that point but I was able to install the Win 7 driver. Everything else,
including network printers installed and work fine.

Given MS declaration a while back that this will be the last ever release
of Windows, I'd be expecting a subscription model to kick in once the
year is up ....

I've seen nothing that really points to this, but.......

What is worrying is the apparently enforced updates, which have included
updates to drivers etc. As Microsoft, at an earlier stage of the beta,
managed to make a whole bunch of testers, including me, think their hard
drives had died, I don't have much confidence in this.

On the other questions, I'm testing on a few dual-core Intel machines,
some quite old (1.6GHz), and have had no problems caused by the computer
hardware. I have a few usb and firewire audio interfaces that worked in
W8.1 and 7, but don't (yet?) work in 10.

What isn't clear is whether, if you take a complete image of the Windows
7 machine, "upgrade" to W10 and don't like it and so re-install the W7,
the W7 will come back as activated or not. The fact that MS has put an
update to W10 icon on the system tray (via one of the recent updates)
suggests that they might want more control over activation etc. in the
future.

I have just been doing quite a bit of work trying to teach myself some
new programming skills and have been using a W7 and W10 machine side by
side. At first, I found little difference, but as the W10 builds
progressed, I have liked it less. The crunch was when I wanted to do a
lot of command line programming and needed different programs to be
accessed quickly. The new start menu has scroll bars that are close to
invisible and other programs have scroll bars that disappear from under
the cursor (I think as in IE in W7) and it became extremely frustrating.
There also is the issue of "monetising the desktop" and the pressure to
run under a Microsoft account login.

For my use, Linux is too limiting, and I'd use W10 in preference, but I
think, on the current showing, I'll stick to W7.

You can download and install a developers version now. Got it running on an
old vista laptop now. It automatically sets itself up as dual boot so that
you still have your old OS. Not quite brave enough to put it on my main PC
but if you have an old laptop or PC to play with it's worth a go.

That applies to the preview (ie test) edition, and one would expect that
to give Microsoft permission to monitor how it is used during
development.

I liked the suggestion elsewhere that it should activate your webcam so
the MS could see how angry it made you.

I don't like what I've read here about Win 10

http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/micr...mission-watch-
every-move.html

M$ will be collecting more info about you than MI5

"Microsoft collects information about you, your devices, applications
and networks, and your use of those devices, applications and networks.
Examples of data we collect include your name, email address,
preferences and interests; browsing, search and file history; phone call
and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; and application
usage."

"We may collect information about your device and applications and use
it for purposes such as determining or improving compatibility" and "use
voice input features like speech-to-text, we may collect voice
information and use it for purposes such as improving speech
processing."

"If you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the
application used to open the file, and how long it takes any use [of]it
for purposes such as improving performance, or [if you]enter text, we
may collect typed characters, we may collect typed characters and use
them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spell check
features."

The above said input recording methods are a classic keylogger malware
features. In absolute terms you are giving permission for Microsoft to
screen your files and keep a log of your keyboard and other inputs.

That is the beta, not the final product.

But it is likely that the entire industry is headed that way now,
essentially driven by what google has been doing in that area.

And it isn't just seen with OS X either, its also seen with iOS and
android. It wouldn't be at all surprising if MS has decided that
they have no real alternative given what all their competitors
are doing and with Linux quite literally completely free etc.

Then don't. I'd imagine its a little routine that is starting at launch time
put there by windows update. It should be possible to stop it running from
msconfig, or manually from control panel.

I'm not sure why anyone would want yet another version of Windows with yet
another new set of apps that do not add much to the party as it is already
planned and working properly.

Since its officiallyout at the end of next month, it looks like a gamble
that not too many users will find too many bugs.
However, if there are any blind people reading this, the new browser and
other apps running on a similar set of new routines in Windows, are not
fully supported ffor screenreaders yet and indeed, nobody seems to be sure
they actually will be at the start of win 10 release, so please, don't
upgrade at the start, it will be a headache as the manufacturers play catch
up.

Unnecessary (as most mobiles are).

You can say the same thing about all phones and any technology.

I have a cheapo Tesco PAYG that I
spend £20 a year on, if that. 99.9% of the time it is switched OFF.

You can spend the same amount with a smartphone and
get to do a hell of a lot more when that is convenient.

M$ has always expected their users to beta test their software. The
consensus in the industry and among Tech Preview users seems to be that
Win10 is nowhere near good enough for a release candidate, so instead
users will be alpha-testing it.

Avoid.

If you want to disable the Win10 advert/nagware that M$ has sneakily
installed on Win7 and 8 systems, remove or hide the following patches in
Windows Update:

KB2952664
KB2990214
KB3035583

Indeed. I thought I'd seen somewhere that Microsoft is planning that
you never "own" Windows10, you just rent it. So those taking advantage
of the current free upgrade might find that after the initial free year,
they are forced to pay annually to keep it going. I'd read the small
print vary carefully - though software providers get their lawyers to
write hundreds of long boring paragraphs of the stuff, just so it's hard
to find the important details.

I was bored by computers until micros came out, then I was right ahead
of the game as they finally seemed to be cheap enough to be useful.

I have followed 'mobile' technology since its inception, and have never
actually had the need to indulge in almost all of it, laptops notebooks,
ipods, ipads and i phones. I do real work with computers sitting at a desk.

When away from that I don't really want phone calls and when I do a
simple phone is more than enough.

Indeed. I thought I'd seen somewhere that Microsoft is planning that you
never "own" Windows10, you just rent it.

A moot point (perhaps) but Windows users never *did* own their copy of
Windows installed on their computers.

So those taking advantage of the current free upgrade might find that
after the initial free year, they are forced to pay annually to keep it
going. I'd read the small print vary carefully - though software
providers get their lawyers to write hundreds of long boring paragraphs
of the stuff, just so it's hard to find the important details.

The ultimate goal of MS is that a Windows user will just have a basic copy
of Windows on a machine, & everything else will be on a MS Cloud. This was
"leaked" some time ago, by a person who had access to MS insiders & who
published it anonymously on his website. This person had been right
about his previous "predictions" about what MS was up to.
The website disappeared about about 18 months, or two years ago, & has
never come back. (This was reported in The Register too). It is then very
likely, as you say, that Windows users could be made to pay annually to
have access to their data.

I am reasonably happy with Windows 8 I do not seem to get any problems.
My concern is if I go for Windows 10 will I be able to revert to Windows
8 with ease? I am not particularly software savvy, so dual loads etc.
are not easy for me.

I think it is much more likely that MS has decided to go the
way the whole of the rest of the industry has gone with retail
level OSs, all of the updates and upgrades will be free to those
who already have the OS and they will make their money
from what they get when their OS is sold with the hardware.

I'd read the small

Odd that MS has a completely free cloud and while ever their competitors
have their own, they won't be able to charge everyone to use theirs.

In fact they have just recently added completely free versions of word
and excel to Apple's iOS which doesnÿt cost anyone a penny to upgrade
and with their main cloud competitors like dropbox too.
