Places to buy lumber in the St. Louis area?
Been flipping around the yellow pages and web sites, decided to ask here
as well. Does anybody live in or near the St. Louis (MO) area and have any recommendations for where to go for woods? Closest place I can find is in south city and it's a looooong drive from where I live and work (west county). |

They're going out of business and he's giving great deals if you pay in cash... Everything was pretty picked over last weekend but I picked up 50 bf of walnut for a song and he still had quite a bit of cherry and spalted maple left. Other than that, there's St. Charles Hardwood on 30 (Gravois) about a mile west of 141 (Woodsmill). You have to watch him close as he's not the brightest guy in the world and usually figures about 10-30% more bf than you really have. St. Louis Hardwoods is on Watson just east of Lindbergh. Schaller Hardwood is in South county someplace. I haven't checked them out yet. 314-894-1499. Excellent, thanks! I work on Lindbergh between Page and Olive, anything near that area is perfect. Where is Action Hardwoods at? I'm checking the yellow pages and I don't see it. |

(Kirkwood) It's in a not so great neighborhood though I've never had any trouble. 238 Meacham 63122 http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed...122&country=us |

Yeah I live about 2 minutes from Woodcraft, I show up there about once a week to ask stupid questions. The staff is very tolerant of me. Not a lot of wood stock though. I need some cherry for a table I'm building, Action sounds like a steal. He opens at 8:00 am. Last week he was saying that he wants to be out of the building by the end of the month. Show up bright and early (with cash) and you might just walk away with a deal. |

Places to buy lumber in the St. Louis area?
There's A+ Hardwoods south on 55, just past Arnold. I stopped by a couple
of weeks ago. Looks like a great selection, pricing I don't really know. I didn't buy any lumber, just wanted to see what they had. Extremely nice gentleman that runs it, seemed to be truly interested in helping me find out about their place even knowing that I'm a recreational woodworker. Already mentioned Action (didn't know they were going out of business) and St. Charles Hardwoods and St. Louis Hardwoods. Haven't been to any of these three, but my step father really likes St. Louis Hardwoods in Kirkwood. There is also a St. Louis Hardwoods about 1/2 mile south of 70 on hwy.94. Been there, okay selection. A St. Charles Hardwoods on Mid Rivers Mall Dr. out in St. Peters. Been there, good industrial selection of woods. Not very assistable staff. Schaller Hardwoods is north of 270 on 55. You actually get to it from Lindbergh near 55. I think the name of the street is Green Park. I haven't been there. It might be a good place to go by the looks of their website if they allow 'recreational' purchases. http://www.schallerhardwood.com/ There's 'The Wood & Shop' on north Lindbergh. It's across from Boeing just north of the airport. Good wood selection, especially exotics. Bought from them. http://www.woodnshop.com/ The Woodworker's Store (I think Rockler outlet) on St. Charles Rock Road. It can be gotten by 70 going west on the rock road or from 270 going east onto the rock road. Its on the north side near a large music store. Been there a number of times. Good hardware and tool selections, limited wood. That's about all I know of. BTW, I moved from O'fallon, MO to South County last September. -- Tim -------- See my page @ http://www.wood-workers.com/users/timv/ (seriously needs updating) |

We went up to St. Louis yesterday. We live in Jackon, Mo. just outside of
Cape Girardeau. Anyway went to Woodcraft and picked up the PC 12" Dovetail jig, brass bushings and some finishing supplies. Got to play around with the Leigh jig a little while wiping the slobber off my chin. Those guys are always friendly, helpful and don't laugh at my stupid questions. Then followed wife around TGMax. We was going to go to Rockler but it was just to hot so we headed back out of town and stopped at Festus to load up on slidders (for me, she hates them). Didn't know there were that many from the rec that lived in St. Louis. Maybe sometime when I head up there several of us could meet up somewhere for some lunch and some bull. -- Mike S. Well, there's not one north of Appleton for me, either. But I've got lots
of local sawyers and a drying rack in the garage. Means no walnut, because I'm too far north, but the selection isn't all that bad. "Silvan" wrote in message ... You know, you people suck. Woodcraft, hardwood dealers out the wazoo... I checked that woodfinder thingie someone posted, and confirmed that there isn't anything within a 100-mile radius of here. I've never _seen_ a piece of walnut or cherry that wasn't already made into something by someone else. pout |

I'm a total n00b but if I was available I'd show up for some eats. I live about 3 blocks from that Woodcraft store, the guys in there are super-friendly, super-helpful, and they're very patient with newbie questions. We tried to find the Rockler up on the Rock Road and couldn't figure out where it was. It was damned hot so I gave up and went back home. There's a White Castle near Woodcraft next time you're here. Go East on Olive to 270, take it North to Dorsett East, White Castle is a few blocks down on the north side. |

Places to buy lumber in the St. Louis area?
"James" wrote in message ... I cant remember the name of the place. It was at Big Bend and I-44 (Meecham Park) There was a place in an old school building. The school had several businesses in it. Custom hardware, cabinet shop, hardwood. I do not remember the name or know if it is still there. They tore down most of that area to get rid of the ghetto. Give me a few days to check if it is still open. Sometimes they had great lumber, sometimes it was pretty average. I also recommend Woodcraft. Those guys are fantastic That's Action Hardwood now (used to be West County Hardwood). The city is going to try and turn the building into a community center but they don't have much of a plan in place. He didn't want to get caught up in the problems and decided the easiest thing to do would be to pack it in. He's closing up and going to work for St. Charles Hardwood (on Gravois) as a consultant of sorts. |
