Been flipping around the yellow pages and web sites, decided to ask here
as well. Does anybody live in or near the St. Louis (MO) area and have
any recommendations for where to go for woods? Closest place I can find
is in south city and it's a looooong drive from where I live and work
(west county).

There's A+ Hardwoods south on 55, just past Arnold. I stopped by a couple
of weeks ago. Looks like a great selection, pricing I don't really know. I
didn't buy any lumber, just wanted to see what they had. Extremely nice
gentleman that runs it, seemed to be truly interested in helping me find out
about their place even knowing that I'm a recreational woodworker.

Already mentioned Action (didn't know they were going out of business) and
St. Charles Hardwoods and St. Louis Hardwoods. Haven't been to any of these
three, but my step father really likes St. Louis Hardwoods in Kirkwood.

There is also a St. Louis Hardwoods about 1/2 mile south of 70 on hwy.94.
Been there, okay selection.
A St. Charles Hardwoods on Mid Rivers Mall Dr. out in St. Peters. Been
there, good industrial selection of woods. Not very assistable staff.

Schaller Hardwoods is north of 270 on 55. You actually get to it from
Lindbergh near 55. I think the name of the street is Green Park. I haven't
been there. It might be a good place to go by the looks of their website if
they allow 'recreational' purchases. http://www.schallerhardwood.com/

There's 'The Wood & Shop' on north Lindbergh. It's across from Boeing just
north of the airport. Good wood selection, especially exotics. Bought from

The Woodworker's Store (I think Rockler outlet) on St. Charles Rock Road.
It can be gotten by 70 going west on the rock road or from 270 going east
onto the rock road. Its on the north side near a large music store. Been
there a number of times. Good hardware and tool selections, limited wood.

That's about all I know of. BTW, I moved from O'fallon, MO to South County
last September.

We went up to St. Louis yesterday. We live in Jackon, Mo. just outside of
Cape Girardeau. Anyway went to Woodcraft and picked up the PC 12" Dovetail
jig, brass bushings and some finishing supplies. Got to play around with the
Leigh jig a little while wiping the slobber off my chin. Those guys are
always friendly, helpful and don't laugh at my stupid questions. Then
followed wife around TGMax. We was going to go to Rockler but it was just to
hot so we headed back out of town and stopped at Festus to load up on
slidders (for me, she hates them). Didn't know there were that many from
the rec that lived in St. Louis. Maybe sometime when I head up there several
of us could meet up somewhere for some lunch and some bull.

That'd be fun. I'm a total n00b but if I was available I'd show up for
some eats. I live about 3 blocks from that Woodcraft store, the guys in
there are super-friendly, super-helpful, and they're very patient with
newbie questions. We tried to find the Rockler up on the Rock Road and
couldn't figure out where it was. It was damned hot so I gave up and went
back home. There's a White Castle near Woodcraft next time you're here.
Go East on Olive to 270, take it North to Dorsett East, White Castle is a
few blocks down on the north side.
