Apple ipads (again)
We, apparently, need an ipad. Not sure why, but I'm told we do. Given the threads discussed here in the past, I can see what they're good for, but what size HD? The basic model is 16GB which is tiny compared to modern PC sizes. Having said that, does an ipad need a large HD? The size options seem to be 16, 32 and 64GB. The antique desktop I'm typing this on has 228GB. -- Graeme |

Always remember the cloud - whether that is iCloud, Dropbox, or whatever else. You do know they are launching new 7-inch models on 23rd October? Possibly to be available from November 2nd. And there are some very nice other tablets these days. Partner is rather taken by the Samsung Note 10.1 with its very clever stylus. And the other big question - 3G or not 3G! -- Rod |

Once the Apple lock-in begins, you will start hemorrhaging money on content, and the more you buy, the more you are locked in. If you really NEED a tablet, as far better media consumption device would be something like this: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5088917.htm (although holding out a few days, the 32GB model will be £199, and the 16GB £159.), no lock in, you can put whatever content you wish on there, without needing to clear it thru Apple first. -- Using Opera's mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ |

The display on the iPad is its real selling point though, I have the nice
Asus pad and an iPad and the Android one spends most of it's time in the cupboard because the iPad is just so pleasant to use. |

Whats so special about the display, that it's got some bull**** "Retina" branding? It's just a IPS panel with a specific pixel density (264 Pixels/Inch to be exact) that many other tablets have already exceeded (for example the Samsung Galaxy Note II) The Nexus7 is only a little behind the ipad3 pixel density (at 216 PPI), and my Xperia S smartphone (342 PPI) far exceeds it and the iPhone5's (PPI326) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._density#Apple So take away the bull**** Apple branding and look at the raw pixel densities, and yes the Apple products are OK, but there are several that are better, and the Nexus7 costing half the price and being far more functional is a total steal. -- Using Opera's mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ |

I bought the 32GB 3G ipad as I figured the built-in mobile and GPS reciever would be useful. 6 months on the kids love it, wife uses it a lot for everything from Facebook to recipies in the kitchen to watching the F1 in bed! I use it for quick surfing and email mainly, but I have found it very useful when out-and-about with a cheap PAYG sim in it, and with navigation software such as 'NavFree'. It has made my netbook redundant. I bought a French Orange PAYG sim in the summer for 3 weeks in France, which came in handy many times. I disagree with the comments above about having to constantly pay apple. There are very few apps I've paid for, most are free, with the occesional £2 and under one. |

THey will of course both serve the same basic function, and use the same apps, but thats it. What Android tablet was slow and clunky exactly, and how much did you pay? As clearly to make that statement a fair statement, it would have had to be £399+ (iPad money), as anything else is comparing apples and oranges. I stand by my statement, that the Nexus7 is the best tablet on the market today bar none. It's fantastic performance, no lag whatsoever, has a balanced featureset which keeps the cost and weight down. Sure it's got no 3G (but then that's what mobile tethering and wifi hotspots are for), and no rear facing camera that makes you look a dickhead when you take pictures with it. The Galaxy range is still superior to the i-phone range despite the new i-phone 5. The Galaxy 4 is coming out in a matter of months and promises to totally outstrip the i-phone. Samsung are very secretive about the 4. It is true about being locked into Apple. They are vertically integrated in hardware and software. You are their mercy. |

Personally, I've always thought of the whole concept as an elegant solution looking for a problem, but would still rather like one (!) I know quite a few people with iPads (fewer with other variants) and I've never heard any of them complain about storage limitations. Many of the people I work with use them to take documents to meetings, create things on the go etc etc, but this doesn't really require much storage. If you're thinking it would be good to have a full set of music and movies on one, then you'll fill the space very quickly, but they are really designed to work alongside a host machine where the bulk of everything is stored. My gadget-boy son has an iPad and even he has never whinged about storage. He seems to use it more for web browsing though, with all his music on his iPhone. As previously mentioned, printing etc from an iPad can be a bit of a faff but then there are many WiFi printers around now. |

Ppi is only one factor, the more important factor to me is the actual resolution which in the case of the iPad allows for better font smoothing and a better web experience with a bit less scrolling. A big part of my usage of the iPad is web browsing and the display of web pages is just so much better that any of the Android tablets I've tried. I'm not even going to get into the debate about how poor the Android browser is (though Chrome is a little better) or even worse Firefox mobile - even on my quad-core Galaxy S3 the browser is so slow it's painful compared to Safari on the iPad on the same wifi connection. On paper most of the specs of my Android pad are better than the ipad, faster CPU, faster GPU and more memory, it's the OS that's letting it down and that doesn't look to be improving that much either - I have "Jelly Bean" on my pad and it doesn't improve the things I want it to improve. Yes there are major advantages in Android over Ios/Apple, but it depends what you want to do with your device and and the moment the those advantages are being outweighed by the Apple device simply doing what I need it to do, better. My Phone reports 720*1280 when browsing, but at that resolution you can't clearly see small text on the screen without zooming, unless your eyes are much better than mine which results in more scrolling. Similar on the Android pad, although it's a bigger screen the text isn't as clear as the iPad and I find I need to zoom some pages, though obviously not as much as the phone. Again this is about me, although I don't need reading glasses others may have better vision and may find the other devices more readable than me without needing to zoom as much. |

Passenger beside me on a recent flight was using one to listen to music. ****. Totally un-suitable IMHO, it looked ridiculous propped up on his table but perhaps thats what it was about. Look at me with my Ipad, and have you ever seen anyone using one to take a picture. Doofus re-defined. Anyway with the demise of St Steve Apple have now seen the light and are bringing out a sensibly sized tablet. |

Apple ipads (again)

Abdroid v Apple The great thing in, the CHOICE (something Apple owners don't have), and even better, is that your £70 purchase of a ZTE BLade (or whatever), means when when your requirements change, your next phone just works, sign in, all your contacts, calendar and apps come with you. I have what is described by the makers as an Android Home Tablet. It's made by Archos, and I can't buy or download apps from the normal Android app store, I'm locked in to Archos's own store. About all it's useful for is a spot of surfing, but it won't play Flash (Not supported, even via a couple of transcoding sites I've found), so any BBC programmes and a ot of newspaper websites are out of bounds... It won't play .mpeg or .vob movie files, only XVid and DVix. It can be used to play Angry Bids (just about), but the screen display is the wrong size. Too big for the phone version, too small for the tablet version, so you're shooting blind. All the music players available for it (Even Winamp) refuse to sort mp3 tracks by filename, but insist on sorting by the Metadata tags, which is a real PITA when all the other music players I use sort by filename. And so on. I mention this so that people are aware that not all Android devices "Just work" and may not be compatible with other Android devices or common standards. The iPad Retina display is the 2048 x 1536 definition quoted by Apple, but downscaled in the OS by quite a large factor, using smoothing to make it look better while retaining the invisibility of the individual pixels. For some reason, they don't make a fuss about this. -- Tciao for Now! John. |

Yes, I agree, it is all about marketing. No, it's about getting a job done according to various metrics such as cost, performance, longevity etc. and if it doesn't do what you need or something else does it better then don't buy it. |

FSVO "printing", from what I have heard you are restricted to a small range of printers that Apple deem acceptable. Also iPads are 10" devices, which is quite big to comfortably hold in one hand. I've a Samsung Tab II 7.0, just the right size for the hand, will fit into a large pocket. Only 4G of available storeage but that is more than ample for my needs of email/web browsing and equipment manuals. 3G or not 3G? That is a question. But as some one else said that is why you have mobile tethering and WiFi hotspots. If you have a 3G tablet and 3G phone that's two lots of dosh to the mobile operators. GPRS is slow but OK for email (with a proper client, not web mail...). -- Cheers Dave. |

Doofus re-defined. I have a nice phone with a nearly 5" screen, a 7" tablet doesn't give me any real benefit which is why I have a bigger tablet to complement it, where it's appropriate. The point is well made. Anyway with the demise of St Steve Apple have now seen the light and are bringing out a sensibly sized tablet. Be interesting to see how well it sells against the phone and the touch though, apart from the usual suspects who will buy it regardless. |

Everyone says lowest common denominator when they actually mean highest common factor,. Which if you take all the ranges of taste and intelligence and express them as a range from 0 to 100, will get no higher than one, ever. It's laughable how misguided Apple fanboys are, the only things they know about Android are what Steve Jobs told them. What about us that own both ios and Android devices and can think for ourselves, are we still fanbois for preferring a device that can do *some* things better? As I said it wasn't mine - but my pal was fairly certain. You were right. There is no easy way to print from an ipad. You either need one of a very small number of airprint (TM) enabled printers or a computer of some sort with an interface programme to print to the PCs printer. Even then it seems that the control over printer output is very limited. Neither of which fit my definition of easy. |
