That is impossible. My tinnitus is so bad that it wakes me up. I have to
leave the TV on, a radio and two fans to help mask it enough just to get
any sleep. It is miserable, whenever the power is out. I may be awake

I think it's my own tinnitus which makes me enjoy the lack of external

Mine is mostly a high pitched whistle, mixed with a low rumble.

My ears ring off and on, usually a high-pitched tone. I never seem to
have access to a sig gen to find out at what pitch they ring, though.
The one I dragged home wasn't working and my mere 3 years as an

Too few discretes, too many ICs.

That is why I stay away rom most name brands that do a lot of
advertising. The 'generic' 80 cent version of Diet Mountain Dew tastes
the same as the $2.29 bottle from Pepsico.

I'll have to try that. What's your generic called?

One is called 'Diet Mountain Holler', from Save-A-Lot supermarkets.
Another is 'Diet Country Mist' from Winn-Dixie supermarkets. There are a
lot of other regional version of these.

This is more about requirements for service from the central
exchange. In power outages, it does not take too long for cell towers
to run out of stored power, but supposedly the copper to the exchange
must be retained working or repaired in a very short time. Since the
fiber is not covered by these rules, they can save money on the number
of trained linemen kept on hand.

[ ... ]

But as an *individual* customer, it appears to be quite
difficult to get the pinout information to make use of that. So -- if
I'm going to switch over, I want the data in hand before I sign on the
dotted line.

And -- they also have to be prevented from ripping out the
copper from the side of the house to the junction box, because of the
two pair supporting the T1 feed. (Unless they can replace that with more
fiber at no extra cost. :-)

When they call up, or send someone to try to talk me into taking
their package deal (voice, internet, and cable), I get rid of them by
asking:

Can I get static IPs?

I have had the same IP address on broadband cable for over five years.

Guaranteed? And advertised by your domain name, rather than
some Verizon name? (Web pages and e-mail servers want to be reached by
name, after all. :-) And I wind up *blocking* a lot of Verizon IPs
because of spam or sshd login attacks.

Can I get a class-C subnet? (256 addresses).

Does your T1 support IPV6?

It could, if I requested it. I have not bothered, so far.

They can't provide either, while my T1 feed does both for me, so
they go away until the next time. :-)

Can't, or you can't talk to the right people?

Since the communications are always originated at *their* end --
by the people trying to sell the home packages (Voice, Internet and Tv),
*those* people can't give me what I ask for -- so it makes an easy way
to send them away. :-)

T1 is only 1.544 Mb/s. That fiber can handle gigabits per second. T1
and ISDN are the only time they are allowed to cut off the line,
according to discussions that I've had with linemen.

T1 speeds are quite sufficient for my needs.

Granted -- the computers would not need long-term service during
power outages, since I don't have power to run them for more than about
an hour of power company downtime. :-) But the loss of voice
communications for old farts who may need medical assistance is a
different matter. :-) And more likely to be needed in mid-summer or
mid-winter when the longer power outages typically happen. :-)

I just ran a speed test for this computer I got 1.24 Mb/s down and
1.07 Mb/s up but it isn't the only computer that is running right now. I
am also streaming a radio station. I used http://www.speedtest.net/ for
the test. I can get up to 150 Mb/s down, if I want to pay for it. I'll
bet that FIOS will be a lot cheaper than that T1 line, and perform
better.

Probably cheaper -- but only with their own ISP, not with the
one which I am using, which would be charged extra to feed me through
the FIOS, so they would have to charge me extra.

A friend of mine has over 1 Gb/s for his business, but it is only
available in the downtown area. The city built a private fiber backbone
for all their various offices (VOIP and internet), and to help
businesses have better connectivity.

As I said, I don't need that kind of speed.

Enjoy,
DoN.

I salvaged some mahogany from transmission line switchgear which was dismantled in 2010. There was a date on the gear: 1959. The mahogany was externally weathered, but not at all rotten. The weather resistance of mahogany is remarkable.

it is on. I broke down and paid $19.99 for the entire collection of
'Third Rock From The Sun' TV series on DVDs. There are 139, 22 minute
episodes, on 17 DVDs. I bought it, and the complete 'Married With
Children (for $26.77), on ebay. Third rock is even better, with no
commercials! ;-)

I loved MWC but never watched TRFTS. I missed Buffy the Vampire
Slayer a lot, though, and bought 3 seasons of that for about $20.

I like TRFTS, because it is a screwball comedy. Jane Curtain looks
like she as about to lose it most of the time, and it's funny watching

on the show, doesn't hurt the eyeballs.,

So far, my record with the Superbowl: I have managed to miss the last
50 of them. including most of the commercials. The only televised sports
i watched was early NASCAR, before in car cams destroyed it, and IROC
racing.

I gave up watching football back when they had their first strike. If
the multi-millionaire sports asses don't care about their fans, as a
fan, I no longer care about them. Sports announcers ruined things for
me when they got enormous egos and couldn't keep their yaps shut and

It is hard to believe that people wasted $1,300,000,000 on a bloody

products would cost less than half what they do now. Grrr.

That sling is rated at a dead load of 30,000 lbs. Your motor is 68,000
IRRC. Cut that figure by 50-75% for a dynamic load and its nothing
more than a bandaid. While it may indeed lift that motor, if its
jerked by a pothole or the forklift tipping..dont be standing anywhere
near the LZ.

ALWAYS!! keep in mind the difference between dynamic and static
loading. Far too many dead people forgot the difference.

I should mention my cousin Steve Ojala was a salvager and was up a
telephone pole removing the cross arms and insulators, with the pole
tied to a snorkel by rope..when the base of the pole broke off and he
went the 30' down, with the pole landing on top of him, making his
wife a widow and their new baby fatherless. A hell of a waste..she
never did remarry and the boy is now in his 30s.

Im not hacking on you..Im simply warning you that you need to think a
bit more before hooking up a load like that motor was hooked. I simpy
cannot fathom why you had a forklift under it..and a chain from a
crane on one side of it. Either unit should carry it...nor neither
should. And having that cable on only (1) set of lifting lugs on one
side of that motor means that if you blow a line on the forklift..and
the forks drop..that sling will roll the motor over on top of the
operator before you can say ****!!

Btw..in many states..they wont let you use wire slings anymore.

I am just curious, what states?

In many applications...California is one. Most such work is now taken
up by nylon or plyester slings of various types. Many states have
similar restrictions.

You saw the photos of the 14,000 Ton press crown Im machining? And
all the fixturing and lifting gear etc etc that removed that crown?
(250,000 lbs of cast steel) No metal slings were used. Coast, like
most other serious movers..wont use them. Too much liability issues.
The guy I work for part time..has a rack of slings..probably 30 of
them. In the 2 yrs Ive been working for him on and off..Ive used them
(1) time. To lift 900 lbs of really odd sized fabrication. Did I feel
safe? Ayup. He keeps his wire slings in good condition or they go
right into the scrap bin. Same with his synthetics.

I love ya man! I dont want you to get turned into road kill, Dude!!

bit more before hooking up a load like that motor was hooked. I simpy
cannot fathom why you had a forklift under it..and a chain from a
crane on one side of it.

Neither the crane, nor the forklift, could lift it alone.

Either unit should carry it...nor neither should. And having that
cable on only (1) set of lifting lugs on one side of that motor
means that if you blow a line on the forklift..and the forks
drop..that sling will roll the motor over on top of the operator
before you can say ****!!

Why, there is a mast between them.

Btw..in many states..they wont let you use wire slings anymore.

I am just curious, what states?

In many applications...California is one. Most such work is now taken
up by nylon or plyester slings of various types. Many states have
similar restrictions.

I looked this up, I could not find anything that says they are banned
in California, only that they are regulated, like everywhere else.

Thanks! I also use fabric slings whenever I can, it is easier.

Most of the affordable supermarket chains around here were bought by
Supervalue, and the prices went way up. Winn-Dixie hs their knock-off at
$1 right now, and the cheapest the real MT Dew I can find is $1.29, when
they actually have any. I can always find it, at higher prices. I
usually watch for it to be on sale, and stock up. I reserve room for 40
two liter bottles in the pantry.

Quite the little oral fixation you have there, Mikey. I only stock
water in those quantities.

I usually go to the supermarket twice a month, and there are times
when I don't find any for over a month so I stock up when I can find it.
If it goes on sale, you can forget about finding any till the sale is
over.

Your new digs? ;-)

That looks like an old abandoned school in Florida that was used as a
backdrop for a horror movie. They finally tore it down a while back.

Bowie's vid probably showed old pics from an actual asylum somewhere.
Egad, they did horrible things to folks back then to "remove demons".

Why, there is a mast between them.

That mast will simply make it harder for the coroner to drag the body
out of the smashed cage.

Dynamic loading..remember?

32 feet per second, per second.

How much does that 38k lbs weigh when trying to stop it from a 2 foot
fall? 4 foot fall? 6 foot fall?
