To further Gunner's splainin' , hybrids may sometimes germinate , but you
never know what you're going to get - I had a volunteer cherry tomato this
year , I might save some seeds as it was a pretty decent tomato . Another
phrase often associated with "heirloom" veggies is "open pollination" ,
which is self-explanatory . The biggest advantage , as he said , is that the
heirloom varieties will breed true . If you save seeds from say a "Rutgers"
tomato , that's what you'll get next year when you plant 'em . I bought a
"package" deal of seeds for WTSHTF , which are sealed up and in my freezer .
Next spring I'm going to try to buy only heirloom varieties for my garden to
increase that supply with varieties that I don't have yet .

gardening explained_ thoughtfully checked out of the county
library by SWMBO. I shall have to re-read it more carefully
over the next couple days.

Right now, I'm looking for some 12 V ~80 PSIG water pumps to
cycle at 4.2 milliHertz (a few aerosol spritz's every 4
minutes). I'd rather not be in the 'water pump business' so
a turnkey solenoid - driven pump would be super cool.

Perhaps something like this, with a solenoid pressing from

products of natural selection or 'traditional' hybridization.
There are genetically modified carrots proposed which
are 'carrots' in the same way that a GMO supermarket tomato

It never was. There have always been various types of carrots. The
older varieties have more flavor and variations per crop. The modern
hybrid varieties are bred for huge farms to make more money.

Try growing some San Marzano tomatoes, AKA Italian Sauce tomatoes.
They have a lot more flavor than the common Roma variety.

A carrot is still a carrot. But far to many of the seeds you buy
at the store are hybrids. Which means, that if you save the seeds
like grandpa did, next year you will get a mixed bag of carrots
(tomatoes, corn, etc), as the recessive genes play mix and match. In
other words, the seeds do not "breed true" what you plant is not
exactly what you will get. Oh, they will be carrots (etc) - but not
all like the ones you raised last year.

Heirloom seeds are just that - seeds which will "breed true" year
after year after year. And very often, there are varieties of the
plants which will work better in your local than others, you avoid the
mono culture problem, you're not spending money on seeds.

Well Doh ! I planted three varieties this year , ands didn't save any
seeds . Yet . The Rutgers is the only one still producing , which I find odd
.. Info I got from the net and other sources was that it was a determinate
strain and would fruit one big buncha 'maters and then no more . I was gonna
bag 'em and tag 'em and toss 'em in the freezer .

I'll heat and stretch some 10 mil poly over the back, top and

base. I can retrofit a stouter cover in case the poly proves
too weak for the 'environmental challenges'.

The plants will sprout from a vertical piece of ABS DWV anchored
to the frame.

The side doors will be made the same way as the frame
from 1/2" square tube and gusseted 5/8" TIG'ed corner supports.
I hope that the corner gussets will keep the doors planar and
prevent them from 'potato chipping', especially after I stretch
the poly fabric over them.

Yesterday I devoured Les Bridgewood's _Hydroponics, soilless
gardening explained_ thoughtfully checked out of the county
library by SWMBO. I shall have to re-read it more carefully
over the next couple days.

Right now, I'm looking for some 12 V ~80 PSIG water pumps to
cycle at 4.2 milliHertz (a few aerosol spritz's every 4
minutes). I'd rather not be in the 'water pump business' so
a turnkey solenoid - driven pump would be super cool.

Perhaps something like this, with a solenoid pressing from

A carrot is still a carrot. But far to many of the seeds you buy
at the store are hybrids. Which means, that if you save the seeds
like grandpa did, next year you will get a mixed bag of carrots
(tomatoes, corn, etc), as the recessive genes play mix and match. In
other words, the seeds do not "breed true" what you plant is not
exactly what you will get. Oh, they will be carrots (etc) - but not
all like the ones you raised last year.

Heirloom seeds are just that - seeds which will "breed true" year
after year after year. And very often, there are varieties of the
plants which will work better in your local than others, you avoid the
mono culture problem, you're not spending money on seeds.

First I have to install a better newsreader. I have one here, but I haven't
installed it on my new computer yet.


Using Agent 4.2 or later you can also filter on specific news groups.
you can either create a new entry in the Usenet Filters directory or
use the "make a new kill filter" in the Tools group. If the latter
just change the entry to Newsgroups: whateveryouwant.rec. Gets rid of
the survivalists and the other loonies.

Some groups suddenly appear to be unused after you do this :-)

Personally, I don't see any need for a killfile. After a while you get
to know who's an idiot and you just pass over anything from them. Having
a filter take out people I think have goofy ideas seems to go against
the grain of having all kinds. There's always plenty of people with
nutty ideas and that act like idiots. At this point I'm used to them. If
they are too offensive I just ignore them. I can't think of anything
easier than that.

but from what I inderstand, the term "determinate" generally refers to plant
terminal height.

To elaborate, "indeterminate" varieties will continue to grow in height for
as long they have mechanival support and the the weather permits, sometimes
reaching heights in excess of 25 ft....IOW, basically, as long as it doesn't
topple over from the weight, the sky is the limit.

--whereas "determinate" varieties might reach a max height of say 4 ft or
so--and even if your cages are 6ft tall they still never will reach the top
of the cage even if you grow them for several years and under completely
artificial environmental conditions...

I agree with you Hawke.

One has to sift through a lot of chaff to find a grain worth reading
but there is no other way to find that thought that someone offers
that you would never come up with yourself.

I am open to all opinions..and some I do find well worthwhile to see.
A killfile would narrow my view of the world...crazy ass conservatives
included.

FWIW...I note that you like me do not constantly change nyms...and

made it much worse, extending it to additional NGs; Hammy (under about a
dozen pseudonyms) decided to make life miserable for RCM because Cliff had
picked up misc.survivalism from Gunner and Hammy is a prick; and now RCM
is in every nutjobs' cross-posting list because we've become part of their
larger cross-posting, mutual-provocation network.

I tried like hell to stop Cliff from doing it, in public and in private.
Now he's gone, and it's running on its own inertia. Hammy keeps it fired
up by posting dozens of right-wing news stories every week. He won't stop,
and he doesn't appear to have a better nature to appeal to.

more" thing but from what I inderstand, the term "determinate"
generally refers to plant terminal height.

To elaborate, "indeterminate" varieties will continue to grow in
height for as long they have mechanival support and the the weather
permits, sometimes reaching heights in excess of 25 ft....IOW,
basically, as long as it doesn't topple over from the weight, the sky
is the limit.
--whereas "determinate" varieties might reach a max height of say 4
ft or so--and even if your cages are 6ft tall they still never will
reach the top of the cage even if you grow them for several years and
under completely artificial environmental conditions...

Perhaps I misunderstood , not that *that* ever happens ... sfsf . Back
to the dictionary of plant terms !

Yep, unlike the idiots around here some of us are honest. We don't horse
around with new nyms all the time. We tell the truth as we see it. We
read the views of everyone no matter how stupid because that is what
open minded people do. We actually look at both sides of the issues,
unlike them. We're not the ideological drones they like to accuse us of.
Real drones think everyone else is a drone but them.

Followers of right wing dogma don't even know that's what they are. It's
the same with their racist tendencies. They are always looking to accuse
their opponents of racism as if that somehow absolves them of theirs.
Too bad it doesn't. It doesn't even make them aware they have it. Man,
those right wingers need a lot of work with good mental health
practitioners. But they are the least likely to seek the help they
