It never was. There have always been various types of carrots. The
older varieties have more flavor and variations per crop. The modern
hybrid varieties are bred for huge farms to make more money.
Try growing some San Marzano tomatoes, AKA Italian Sauce tomatoes.
They have a lot more flavor than the common Roma variety.
