It appears that you're the one with the problem. The pros who post here
are almost always helpful. If you don't understand what they say, then
perhaps you should do some homework. Some issues cannot be addressed in
babytalk!

Please have sympathy for them because when Viagra fails, it makes the

Guild mentality. Like walking up to a trade-only sales counter trying to
buy something. You're an idiot if you're not part of the club, and we
won't sell to you. Kind of the mirror image of academic snobbery.

We don't cater to the the deranged, or to the HO looking for a free
magic spell to cast upon their unit. If that bothers you then maybe you
resemble that remark, eh? And BTW, it is indeed illegal for you to open
your own refrigerant system.

I've spent over 20 yrs accumulating knowledge, licenses, certs, and some
go beyond HVAC related. In fact many of the professionals in alt.hvac
hold electrical licenses, contractors licenses, you name it, we've
probably got someone with it. Hell, I'm even licensed for asbestos
abatement.

This is Turtle.

Hey , I got a Certification for a Radioactive Safety Officer from the N. E. C. and not from the NEC electric people. You just can't
never tell when you might find some Radioactive sources in your bathroom or Living Room.

Granted, they can be grumpy..As they have said here, they feel it's their
own group..Now, if you ask questions the correct way, some of them will
offer help and most will tell you to ask here in alt.home.repair and then
they will help..They will not answer "how much will this cost" or "what's
wrong with this" as they know as professionals, they need to see it in
person. I don't blame them there, coming from an ex life as an automotive
shop manager I know better than to diagnose over the phone or computer, but
I also don't mind offering my opinion if someone asks.....Now, the way they
treat some folks over there is a bit much, and they say the group is
basically for professionals...It's very strange to me that if they do not
want "outsiders" in the group, then why not set up a "yahoogroup" or
something like that, and have one of them moderate it..When that is the
case, the moderator has to approve membership...Then they would not have to
deal with any outsiders, they would not have to wade thru home owner
questions and the unsuspecting homeowner would not have to be subjected to
their treatment...It takes no special software nor computer "know-how" to
set one up....Heck it would probably be easier for all HVAC guys and gals to
read it, as some internet providers have terrible newsgroup servers...
Just a suggestion guys/gals, I know you don't like the intrusions but Usenet
is public, and folks will always think it's there to share knowledge..
Just a thought and suggestion....

Well needless to say the nuts followed me here. I guess from what I have
been told now that the originator of the group mislabeled it and it should
have been named alt.hvac.pro or something close to it. Using profanity
because someone asks if a certain unit being quoted to them is right is the
work of juveniles. If you are so worried about people learning about your
industry that you use vulgarity you are juvenile or just very paranoid. I
never posted on the group but just from reading the posts I figured out very
quick that it was not a nice place. It made me leary of letting in anybody
with the term HVAC on their uniform, lol. Not a very good ambassador for
your indistry at all. As for working on the unit myself I would have never
thought about that. Freon is not something I would ever mess with. With some
of the language on that group it makes me think freon also makes you a
neanderthal.

Actually...learn how to use Google, and find out that we have been here...as
this is the proper group for questions from homeowners...

Ive been here...your posting history here..well..its got 2 posts...wow.

I guess from what I have
been told now that the originator of the group mislabeled it and it should

Nope. Back in the day, before most of the world knew what the internet was,
much less how to get to Usenet, and people respected the opinions of the
founders and the FAQ, it was as it was intended. Still is, but some refuse
to understand that, and think that just because it is there, its for their
use.

Using profanity
because someone asks if a certain unit being quoted to them is right is

the
work of juveniles.

So is crying and whining about not getting an answer, or barging in the
wrong area and it not catering to you.

If you are so worried about people learning about your
industry that you use vulgarity you are juvenile or just very paranoid.

Nope. I have said time, and time and time again that it would be fine if
every homeowner could work on his system legally.
Here in my state, thats not the case, nor is it the case in many areas.

Vulgarity? Are you THAT thin skinned or just that ****ing prude?

Thats sarcasm...but I doubt you get it.

I
never posted on the group but just from reading the posts I figured out

very
quick that it was not a nice place. It made me leary of letting in anybody
with the term HVAC on their uniform, lol.

Thats funny...in some parts of the country, many of us are leary when anyone
states they got information off the net, since most people will listen to
people like Dave and Stormy, who give dangerous and wrong advice out.

Not a very good ambassador for
your indistry at all.

But pedophile Dave is...ok...
Personally...if the internet went away tomorrow, I still would have all the
work I can stand. So...its not a matter of is you like what I post, provided
that the information you get, based upon the fact that your situation might
be different due to your screwing with it, or someone that thinks hes got a
clue screwing with your unit, is based soley on the fact that its an
educated guess as to what is wrong with it.
Facts are, NO ONE on the internet can tell you what is wrong with your unit,
unless they can see it. Period. its that damn simple..

As for working on the unit myself I would have never
thought about that. Freon is not something I would ever mess with.

I would hope not...since we work with REFRIGERANTS, and the only FREON we
mess with has the name of DuPont on it.
Think about that, what you have posted, and try to understand...thats a
learning experence there..not a slam.

With some
of the language on that group it makes me think freon also makes you a
neanderthal.

Thats ok bucky...with the sob story you posted here, most of us over there
think you are a prick that we would walk off the site and tell you that your
money inst wanted, nor needed to survive.
If you want to understand, I suggest you learn to use Google.

Good grief. More of the same. I am not moaning or groaning. Just posting an
observation. I sure as hell didn't barge in there with a question. I am the
type who listens/reads and thinks before opening my mouth. I could tell very
quickly that people with questions there were not welcome. To have to call
people Fing idiots or corksuckers when informing them that they are not
welcome is juvenile. End of story.

BEFORE REACTING - see the *** below ;-)

alt.hvac is an unchartered, unmoderated group. Given the nature of the
usenet, stuff happens.

Conflict might be reduced if someone there posted a FAQ there regularly,
but some prefer to flame regularly instead.

A little research can help, of interest:

From

http://www.ibiblio.org/ecolandtech/a...r.heat-vent-ac

Authored by Randy Wilkinson, a long interesting read:

"Subject: Group Status

The group "alt.hvac" was created in January 1995 as a temporary place for
people interested in heating, ventilating and air conditioning to share
information until an "official" newsgroup can be voted on and created."

Pretty simple wording!

It is interesting that the claimed FAQ

http://home.att.net/~alt.hvac/

actually refers to sci.engr.heat-vent-ac, see

http://home.att.net/~alt.hvac/charter.htm

Also

http://home.att.net/~alt.hvac/netiquet.htm

contains

"This is also not to say that do-it-yourselfers are discouraged from
posting questions to the HVAC `experts' that regularly read these
articles. Many of the `experts' are glad to help homeowners with their
HVAC problems, others would rather not"

and

"For such persons who insist on ignoring the admonitions outlined here,
gently remind them (in case they're just a newsier who doesn't know any
better), by email that the purpose of the newsgroup is technical
discussion and information sharing and not commercialism. Please Don't
post a follow-up article flaming those persons."

So clearly, the flamers there don't believe in the very documents they use
in the claimed FAQ.

Finally, the guy who often claims to be THE creator, for some reason isn't
listed as one of the authors of the charter or the FAQ keeper when it was
created. (to be fair, research will show he clearly was a participant)

"Authors: Doug Grittani, Lynnette Edrington, and William Delp, PhD" (email
addresses deleted)

Actually, my first URL refence (http://www.ibiblio.org/...) contains

"A hearty THANK YOU to Lynnette for making this group a reality!"

*** Given all that, in practice, the nicer HVAC guys willing to help home
owners seem to hang out here. Your not going to many sharper guys in the
profession than Turtle!

So why not go with the flow?

"Homeowner Help from the Alt.HVAC and Sci.Engr.Heat-Vent-AC News Groups"

Maybe it's time to change the heading over there at the "homeowner's
corner."

just a thought.

Just a thought...and you know..you just hit it on the head..

Since that was put up to DIRECT homeowners to that page anyway...and keep it
out of the group....wow...
We all forgot about that...after all, we are all such assholes and all...

If you think we are assholes in text form...refuse to pay after a job and
see what an asshole can be..

Because, you stupid ****s, alt.hvac does not exist for your
convenience, and does not exist for the purpose of educating
home-moaners, no matter how convenient you might think that would be
for you.

I did not start the group in 1995 for your benefit, nor as a
home-moaner advice forum.

Welp...
If you look he

And if you will look carefully into the history of it, you'll
see that *I* authored it, originated it, built it for 5 + years, and
then turned it over to others to keep it going, still largely in its
original form as I created it.

Just because I had a moment of generosity when I wrote /
assembled that 9 years ago, that doesn't mean this group belongs to
the HO's now. Or then.

What a joke, since one was told to carefully look into history...

Rather than chasing away good people who are just looking for an honest
answer, why not simply ignore the question if you're too busy raking in
cash? I belong to many professional groups in my industry, and I've never
seen amateurs treated with disrespect or told to go elsewhere. Quite the
contrary, the pros all seem to jump at an opportunity to help and show their
expertise. As Sy Syms used to advertise on TV, "An educated consumer is our
best customer".

As with so many trades, someone (in this case the EPA) hands out a license
to steal and they don't want anyone looking over their shoulders.

A better way would be for them to take it private, e.g. set up a Yahoo group
that requires admission by a group moderator who checks qualifications for
admission, but that would preclude all the fun of offending the customers or
anyone else who passes by who isn't a member.

--------snip--------

P.J.Modicom himself has said the group exists "for a bunch of
guys to chew the fat over a few beers after a days work" OWTTE.

Part of that 'modus operandi' is to throw their empty beer
bottles at whom-so-ever passes by looking for direction.
A pleasant improvement within the group (of late) is the
discovered ability to direct enquiries elsewhere.
FWIW.
Leave the rattlers where they lie. Bunch of Hacks anyways,, for
the most :-)
Certainly,, do not rate them with your professional associations.

And you are just another one of the whiners looking for something free. I
have no problems with people looking over my shoulders. In fact I encourage
it and try to educate my customers. I have yet to have ANYONE say I have
"stole" from them. They keep coming back and referring me to friends and
family because I give them fair deal that that are pleased with.

No, actually, you just need to go someplace else. I agree that berating
someone that comes on a group to ask a question is no a very tactful way of
dealing with someone. Directing them to the proper forum IS a better
alternative. Plus, maybe a "password sensative" newsgroup would have been
better, but it has already been established and it's not going anywhere.

Yeah, but you have to remember: We have plenty of satified customers and all
of our own equipment works fine. We don't worry about whiners looking for
freebies on the internet.

Call me a hack all you want. I hope you treat the person you call to fix
anything of yours a little better....
