Default Unarmed elderly man with dementia killed by police in Calif.

Yet another unarmed man killed by police.

Police in Bakersfield, Calif., found a crucifix on an unarmed
73-year-old retiree with dementia shot dead by an officer, after police
said the man ignored their requests to remove his hands from his jacket.

"During a search of Mr. Serna a dark-colored simulated woodgrain
crucifix was recovered," read a statement from the Bakersfield Police
Department. "Mr. Serna was not armed at the time of the shooting. No
firearm has been recovered."

Serna has never carried a gun and was opposed to firearms, Serna's son,
Frank Serna, told KGET. "I don't know what led police to believe he had
a gun," Frank Serna said.

How convenient to leave this out, from your own source:

"An officer fired seven rounds into Francisco Serna early Monday morning after a neighbor contacted police and said Serna brandished a gun at his wife and wife's friend."

And here's the full story, again, from your own source:

"Police said the events unfolded about 12:35 a.m. Monday. A neighbor arrived home as a passenger in a friend's car and as she exited the car, she noticed Serna standing behind her with his right hand "concealed inside his jacket," the police statement read.

The neighbor told police that Serna "began questioning her about living in the neighborhood and demanded she open the car door so he could look inside.."

The neighbor told police she saw "a dark brown or black handled object that she believed was a gun" inside Serna's jacket.

The neighbor's friend unlocked her car door and Serna began looking inside the car. At that point, the neighbor ran to her house and told her husband to call the police because there was a man outside with a gun, police said.

The neighbor's husband called 911 and reported "there was a man outside of his house in possession of a revolver and that the man had brandished the gun at the women outside."

Selman and several more officers arrived on the scene, and while talking to the woman, saw Serna come out of his house across the street and walk toward them with both hands "concealed inside of his jacket."

Several officers ordered Serna to stop and show his hands, but he did not, according to police.

"As Mr. Serna was about 15-20 feet from Officer Selman, Officer Selman fired seven rounds at Mr. Serna," according to the police statement."

As Paul Harvey used to say, "And now you know the rest of the story"
and that some posters want to totally misrepresent the most basic facts".

Why pump *seven* bullets into him and not taser him first.

It seems that Bakersfield makes a habit of killing people.

A study published last year by a project called Mapping Police Violence
rated Bakersfield's Police Department as the deadliest in the country,
logging 13.6 killings for every million people. The United States
average is 3.6, according to the project.

Now read the difference between a "riot shield" (your words) and a
Tactical Ballistic Shield. Aside, these items are not carried in every
police vehicle everyday. They are used in calculated situations.

The police in this incident were not going to a riot. They were
investigating a man that had accosted two neighbors. Got it?

Doubt it.

I get it, but how hard would it be to carry a couple of those shields in

Bod was thinking very hard :
Yet another unarmed man killed by police.

Police in Bakersfield, Calif., found a crucifix on an unarmed 73-year-old
retiree with dementia shot dead by an officer, after police said the man
ignored their requests to remove his hands from his jacket.

"During a search of Mr. Serna a dark-colored simulated woodgrain crucifix was
recovered," read a statement from the Bakersfield Police Department. "Mr.
Serna was not armed at the time of the shooting. No firearm has been
recovered."

Serna has never carried a gun and was opposed to firearms, Serna's son, Frank
Serna, told KGET. "I don't know what led police to believe he had a gun,"
Frank Serna said.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2...e-ca/95399066/

The rest of the story reads like suicide by cop. It makes me wonder if
he was really suffering from dementia or it was just suggested by
family that he was. Maybe this sort of thing will come out in the
investigation that is sure to follow. Until it does or doesn't,
speculate all you want, I trust your 'reporting' as much as I do
Burford's.

The problem is not the police, the problem is the high likelihood of an American citizen carrying a gun. The demented man looked like he was hiding a gun. So here we have an example of gun owners making it more dangerous for non gun owners, without even touching them.

logging 13.6 killings for every million people. The United States

Taser?!? I'd like to see you stop me from shooting you, by using a taser. All it does it tense my muscles up, quite likely causing me to pull the trigger whether I was going to or not.

In the USA, since everyone is a possible shooter as you all stupidly carry guns, then a bulletproof shield would be a wise thing to have with you at all times as a cop.

The criminals in the US are often brainless and/or on drugs.
Tasers are often ineffective.

FWIW, the only people that care when a cop shoots a thug are Jesse

our solution would be guns. Most of us, except for leftist liberals,
don't worry about the personal issues in other countries. It's

Therein lies the problem, you don't know and refuse to accept the facts

you're told of that from others prior to your comment above, you still
stated it, thus proving your tunnel visioned idiocy.

Because they had credible reports that he had a gun and he had his
hands in his pockets and would not comply with requests to remove
them. Tasers are far less effective than bullets. What's the
chance that a taser dart will hit him, connect, at that distance?
And while you're screwing with a taser, he fires and kills you.

About as hard as it would be for a perp to shoot you in the leg or other

to chase after him, run all over, jump fences, carrying a riot shield? Would you volunteer to advance on
a perp that had a gun, refused to take his hands out of his pockets,
using one of those shields? Why should we ask LEO to take grave risks

pull the trigger whether I was going to or not.

How come that the UK police generally use tasers and shooting people
is the last option, but with the US police it appears that shooting is
the first option (in too many cases).

I wonder what your life expectancy would be if you were a cop.

In the USA or the UK police?

Either one. After being shot or sliced and diced by someone you thought
was going for his cellphone or maybe a crucifix.

In the UK, the chances would be virtually zero. In the USA, a much

higher chance, going by the stats.

As they say, "no brain no pain".
The criminals in the US are often brainless and/or on drugs.
Tasers are often ineffective.

FWIW, the only people that care when a cop shoots a thug are Jesse
Jackson and Al Sharpton and their simple-minded followers. Law-abiding
people are just happy another criminal is dead.

Not quite right. Those two only care when it's a black thug.
