Having had to wait for nearly a fortnight for an 'Industrial Cleaning
Company' to come & assess, remove + document flood damaged property, I
was totally pi**ed off today when I came in from work!

Wifey..(sorry Mary,... or any other left wing liberal femenists), was
crying her little cotton socks off when I came home.....the '*******s'
had only "asked" her for £100 up front to cover for any Insurance
excess!

Guess what...I've gone into Victor Meldrew mode...& I smell meat ;-))

Well that might be a lesson for you - don't agree to something if you don't
know what it is you're agreeing to. In future CHECK, and don't leave others
to be put in such a position.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Lurch
saying something like:

Who's organised them?

If it's your insurance company then won't they send you the check to
pay them at the end of the work (This is what happened with a friend
recently after her claim was settled by the company)
As far as I know they settle the amount with you less your excess and
you have to pay them and make it up.

Like Mogga, I also don't quite follow what happened. Was this the firm
you were expecting sent by your insurers or were they opportunist con
men? How did she know she had done anything wrong to evoke tears? What
do you mean by the quotes around "asked"? Were they intimidating? I
guess she actually paid up? Did they give her a receipt? Can you stop
the cheque? What do your insurers say if they sent them? If not, have
you reported this to the police? Or maybe Trading Standards who at
least around here are hot on rogue traders and have a rapid response
number to report them on (though I doubt if there's any point unless
they're going door-to-door). The media are probably also looking for a
new flood story angle. Don't be too hard on Mary, these people are
very convincing and persuasive.

I have often wondered whether cowboys saddle up and head in droves for
disasters, as insurers can't be too choosy when there's so much to do.
Or do they stay away because they might have to do some real work if
the insurers are checking? On a similar tack, is the looting we heard
about on the news a new phenomenon? I don't remember it in previous
disasters.

The cleaning company is in fact the one authorised by my Insurance
company to deal with things. I have in fact sent a fax to my 'Loss
Adjuster' expressing my feelings :-)

My wife is too worldly wise to be conned/intimidated into paying any
'excess'. As for the tears, they were caused more by frustration &
devastation she has had to endure over the past few days + the fact that
she had just completed a 12hr nightshift!

What lesson you pillock?

We didn't agree to anything, nor are we stupid enough to part with cash
because someone asks us to!

How have we left "others to be put in such a position"?

Finally, what medication are you taking?

There certainly has been looting in this area!

Within 3hrs of one elderly couple being evacuated from their Bungalow
they had been burgled & all their electrical equipment stolen.

That was only one example from several of which I've been told about!

There are also several instances where items which have been removed
from inside peoples properties ready to be assessed by the various loss
adjusters & left in gardens, have then mysteriously disappeared during
the night.

The area I'm talking about? Well that's the now famous 'forgotten City'.

I know where you mean. The flooding in Hull was missed out of the news for
some reason. More houses were flooded in Hull than in all of South Yorkshire
put together and no Prince Charles turning up to "help". Forgotten it was.
You have my sympathies.

Do you mean me?

I'm anything but left wing, renowned for my illiberality and believe that
there's nothing as unfeminine as a feminist. Or even femenist.

You can diminish you're wife's status but using a childish word, it doesn't
bother me, if it doesn't bother her either it's no problem to anyone is it?

I wonder if you took her as your lawful wedded wifey?

I heard a woman saying that she couldn't take an offer of temporary

people had even taken planks of wood! Then she complained that she hadn't

I know where you mean. The flooding in Hull was missed out of the news for
some reason. More houses were flooded in Hull than in all of South
Yorkshire put together and no Prince Charles turning up to "help".
Forgotten it was. You have my sympathies.

Hull is getting a lot of coverage. Leeds had none.

We are being philosophical about things. There are far worse things
happening in this world to worry about things which are replaceable at the
end of the day.

Well said. There's no point in worrying about things which have happened and
no point in worrying about things which MIGHT happen.

If you worry you die. If you don't worry you still die.

Yes Hull is getting a lot of coverage now, but consider the fact that
one in five properties have been damaged. Estimated costs of repairing
the infrastructure is in excess of £200 million (although we have been
promised £14 million from central government) & in all likelihood our
Council Tax will treble next year. 12 schools closed for up to a year.
Add to that the problem of the thousands which will be homeless for up
to two years whilst repairs are made to their properties. Then there are
the lucky ones who managed to find Hotel accommodation, albeit 100 miles
away (that's going to be one hell of a commute for them if they're still
lucky enough to have a job to come to).

I think if the situation had occurred 'down south' a "National Disaster"
would have been declared. But saying that, we're just oiks up north!

Wifey..(sorry Mary,... or any other left wing liberal femenists), was

No

I'm anything but left wing, renowned for my illiberality and believe
that there's nothing as unfeminine as a feminist. Or even femenist.

OK, my 'spellcheck' missed that one

You can diminish you're wife's status but using a childish word, it
doesn't bother me, if it doesn't bother her either it's no problem to
anyone is it?

It bothered you enough to respond

I wonder if you took her as your lawful wedded wifey?

I sure did...'wifey' to some is a term of endearment similarly
'hubby'.

And to my mind rather nicer than 'Spouse'.

Well that might be a lesson for you - don't agree to something if
you
don't know what it is you're agreeing to. In future CHECK, and
don't
leave others to be put in such a position.

What lesson you pillock?

We didn't agree to anything, nor are we stupid enough to part with
cash because someone asks us to!

How have we left "others to be put in such a position"?

I think he was having a go at you not being at home and thus leaving
your wife to deal with these 'people'.

Finally, what medication are you taking?

Or to the point, what medication should he be on - does anyone else
see similarities between the "TYJ" and "Drivel" style of posting?

Mmmm, I might be wrong but I thought the concept of the 'little woman'
only being capable of cooking, cleaning & breeding ....died years ago!

Yeah, how many of them can cook nowadays ?

Shamelessly nicked from another place ...

"Apparently a suspicious car has been found at Liverpool Airport.

It's taxed, MOTd and it's still got its stereo."

When my insurance company sent out some contractors to fix a collapsed drain
a few years ago, they warned me in advance that I would need to give the
contractors a cheque for £50 to cover the excess (as specified in my
policy). This seemed a bit wierd but seemed to be standard practice.

OTOH, an insurance company expecting people to pay £100 without warning them
beforehand is out of order.

Everyone's building and content insurance will also rocket.

I'm a northern oik and I don't see it like that. Stuff happens. We deal with
it. If we can't we should be living in the s**th.
