Default COst of steel at metal suppliers

If I was to buy steel at a metal supplier, in the quantity of a ton or
so, how much would it cost per lb? I mean metal such as hot rolled
rounds 1-3 inches thick, 4140, rectangular solid stock etc.

I want to price my 15 tons of steel below market, and I want to know
what "market" really is.

thanks

New steel averages $1.10 per pound hear in las vegas. No discount for
how many tons you buy. My supplier has a scrap bin you pick that they
sell for .50 per pound. They will deliver for free if your order is over
$300, they also offer one free cut if your buying full length mill stock
typicaly 20-24Ft per piece.

Your gonna have to buy at scrap yard or below prices to make a
profit.

Best Regards
Tom.

Call your local suppliers with a list of your materials and ask them
what they charge for each type.

Its hardly rocket science.

Gunner

The methodology of the left has always been:

1. Lie
2. Repeat the lie as many times as possible
3. Have as many people repeat the lie as often as possible
4. Eventually, the uninformed believe the lie
5. The lie will then be made into some form oflaw
6. Then everyone must conform to the lie

At that price you should be able to make some money.

Got any heavy duty swivel casters?

Iggy, scrap steel purchase is about the only thing you haven't beat me
at for scrounge deals. If you rmeber i bought the whole room of steel
at an auction for $100 then immediately sold the rack for $150. It was
over twenty tons.

It was 90 degrees and 80% RH that week and i hauled five days
straight, about died.

Anyway, I've been selling off that pile at 50 cents per lb. and guess
the weight (low if you load yourself and get a lot. Full weight if you
are a PITA)

Yes, that was a great deal and definitely better than mine. My best
deal to date is the "forklift manual deal". But this one is great
also. It took us 2 days to remove that metal (5 man-days) and we did
use a forklift. Most of it is still on my 48ft flatbed semi trailer,
we need to build the cantilever rack that we brought along. I am glad
that it was relatively cold and not hot like for you.

Lots of centers around here sell for a lot less and a lot more depending
on the item. Each service center specializes in different stuff, they
aren't competitive across the board. What was quoted $2/lb? Any D-2?

The way you can make serious money at steel buying is to gamble at
buying futures. Get a loan and tell your supplier that you will pay
$2000 dollars today for as much steel as you can get for that price to
be delivered next month and hope he adds a few more pounds because you
are buying in bulk. If the price has gone up in that next month, you
will have already paid $2000 today so you will then be getting more
for the old price.

Depends upon what kind of steel and where. I remember I saw a TV
movie Columbo episode: "The Conspirators" (1978) which ended up being
about ships that traded cargo while out at sea. Could this be a cheap
way of avoiding cheap import duties ?? Like buying steel below
government-set prices??

(you do know that the price of steel is set by each country's
government, right)

No, I didn't know that. Could you enlighten us and advise us of the
U.S. National Agency that sets the price of steel in the U.S., and
perhaps in another one or two countries?

For $2,000 why bother. Just order $2,000 worth of steel and have it
dropped off over in the corner of the lot. You now own $2,000 worth of
steel at today's price.

I was being sarcastic as the original poster apparently knows little
about the futures market and how it functions.

But wholesale or retail you make a profit the same way - buy cheap and
sell dear.

You are silly! I always have parts to make out of tool steel and try to
keep a good stock of sizes.

No, I didn't know that. Could you enlighten us and advise us of the
U.S. National Agency that sets the price of steel in the U.S., and
perhaps in another one or two countries?

It is called The Governmental Commission for Setting Steel Prices,
Eliminating Vice and Watching Craigslist.

Peachy try, ig.

Why can't it be the Office of the United States Trade Representative
(USTR) ??

Why, yes. Its called the Department of Commerce.

dumping duties assessed by the U.S. Department of Commerce"

., and perhaps in another one or two countries?

Sure. 経済産*省 , pronounced "kei - zai - san - gyoo - shoo" (けいざいさんぎょうしょ
う) , got it, yet? (けいざいさんぎょうしょう) "kei - zai - san - gyoo - shoo". It
means Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

But that is not "setting steel prices". According to your reference it
is a case where the maker was selling in the U.S. at a cheaper price
then he sold in his own country, referred to as "dumping".

Never give them anything except a recharge & change the oil every 90
days. Those are their first & second rights. They have no other
rights. No Cable TV, No right to sing the blues...

Which you can't do unless a price is set ... in both countries. Now.
You think I'm lying? Just go and buy a ton or more of steel overseas
at below that price and watch what happens.

Should be about $148 to ship to location with forklift.

Or free pick-up from me.

I am not sure if I can cut O-1, I have a 12 inch bandsaw.
