Where to get cheap fasteners??
I'm looking to stock up on some essentials in my shop, namely bolts, nuts,
washers and lock washers. Can anyone recommend where to go to get these in bulk?? I can't see buying them in the small packs at the local stores and Mcmaster seems pricey. I can get some of the stuff by the pound at the local TSC (Tractor supply center) but nothing small and I'd like a couple of pounds of stuff in the 10-24 range. Any suggestions where to get fastners cheap in 1 lb quantities? Bill |

Even so, anyone else have another place to recommend. It's so easy to compare on the net that I like to get a couple of prices along with shipping before I commit. I'm in Eastern PA, near Reading, so if someone can recommend a place with bulk stuff that might be near me I'll give it a try. Much more fun to go and pick it up at a store I can browse through than it is to buy online. Bill |

I buy all my fasteners at McMaster, with the exception of needing 1-2
special bolts that I can get at Ace hardware. But the usual stuff like 10-32 (my favorite), 1/4, 6,8,etc I buy only at McMaster. THe prices usually are very good for my use. i |

Bill Dayton, Ohio has a great place for you, located in the downtown area, just a few blocks off I-75. It's called Mendelson's Surplus. They buy up overruns from local factories, and sell hardware such as you want for about $1.25 per pound. It's all open stock, so count em out or grab a fistful. Plastic bags are supplied. Most is of better quality than big box stocks, but not always the standard sizes and styles. Count on spending a couple of hours strolling the aisles. It's big -- about ten aisles, 50 feet long, with one-cubic-foot bins from floor to over your head. They also have a large stock of production tooling -- drill bits, milling tools, etc. Most are aimed at keeping a CNC supplied with sharp tools. Many weird sizes. Some pretty big stuff. SHAMELESS PROMOTION Plan a trip to shop at Mendelson's and see the National Museum of the USAF. Allow at least a day to take in the Museum. You can spend another day seeing Wright Brothers POINTS OF INTEREST. Almost all of this is FREE admission and FREE parking. Of special interest to all home shop fans, there is a "Behind-the Scenes" tour of the restoration shops of the Museum every Friday. Sign up in advance to reserve your place at: www.wpafb.af.mil.museum Today, builders of a replica of the first Wright airplane attempted to duplicate the first flight at their original flying field on a corner ot Wright-Patterson AFB. Alas, it crashed without serious injury to the pilot. |

I did't go because I was too busy but I would have estimated that there were over 100 tons of assorted hardware there. John |

I think the key phase is "If you're into auctions". If you have already committed the time, money and travel to attend an auction, then by all means join in the bottom feeding when the time comes for the parts/material inventory is auctioned. But if your objective is stock your shop in a reasonable time period with a well rounded fastener inventory, attending auctions are likely to be counterproductive. Auctions can take ALOT OF TIME and considerable money to attend. If you actually keep track of these costs, you will find that many auctions are not worth attending. A question for the group....what does it cost $$$ to attend the average auction? In my case, I would say at least a day of your time....say 8 hours....most are longer. Travel distance...approx. 150 miles one way = 300 miles round trip = 6 hours travel time. Okay...that is 14 hours of your time. Now the cost of transportation...truck/trailer....how much a mile? Suggestions? Cost of a meal or two? Now that is your base cost...before you bid anything. Now most auctions are at a 10% buyers premium. Rigging fees? And let us not forget about sales tax...remember this is for a home shop. So...what would you say that we are at for a basic cost to the buyer if he buys $1000 worth of merchandise? So what would it cost you to do this auction? TMT |

Technically, insured riggers are usually required in the auction conditions, but it is not always enforced. It is true that you can end up with a bunch of stuff you don't need or can't use in a reasonable amount of time. Lately, I've been back in school so I haven't been hanging out at auctions. |

Any suggestions where to get fastners cheap in 1 lb quantities? Bill The local True Value sells boxes of 100 in about any size from 6-32 on up. If I need something smaller, I have to go down the road about 5 miles to the Ace, where they've got more choice in head types and funny threads. Usually prices are in the $4-5 range per 100 for the smaller stuff. They also sell onesies for about twice the per 100 rate. Doing my best to keep them in business single-handed. MSC also sells 100s, you may have to order a bunch because of the shipping, though. At least True Value is open on Sunday afternoons... I used to frequent electronic surplus joints where they'd sell mixed hardware by the pound. I quit doing that because of the time spent sorting, I could buy brand new hardware by the 100s and still feel well-paid considering the time it took to sort 5s from 6s from various metrics. Stan |
