Tim May, was it "luck"
Retief wrote: Yadda, yadda, yadda... So the question is, "was it luck"? Tim May claims it was not luck. That is, there was no luck involved, but all skill. But of course, ALL business has a certain aspect of luck. Unless Tim had some insider information, that completely removed "luck" from the equation. Would Tim May be where he is, had Apple gone belly up? Likewise with the rest of the list? No. Tim was in the right place, at the right time, and with some careful thought (to minimize, but never eliminate luck), he was successful in his stocks. That's still what we call luck, Tim. If it wasn't luck, then Tim could do the same, in any time period, with any available stocks, and any (however limited) amount of capital. I have my doubts on that... Retief Now I am not a Tim May fan but you have to realize that making money in the stock market depends on a lot of factors and many of them have noting to do with luck. Did it involve luck buying Boeing when Boeing proposed building a 400 passenger airliner (The B747) that would carry passengers at on half the seat mile cost of it's previous generation of aircraft. Did it involve luck buying defense stocks in the 1980 when Ronald Reagan was going to rebuild the American Military. Did it involve luck buying Entertainment stocks (Carnival Cruse lines and resorts ) with a big jump in disposable income of Seniors, coupled with advances in general health of seniors and large number of Seniors retiring in the 1980's and early 90's. Did it involve luck investing in health care when our population is getting older and most americans will use 80% of all the dollars they spend for health care in their whole lives in the last year of life. Dose it involve luck investing in power generation companies when our yearly need of power is growing at a 9-15% per year rate yet we are not building any new power plants. Does it involve luck when investing in security companies, when this war or terror mill go on for 20 years or more and International business and their properties are going to be the primary targets of terrorist organizations. No making money in the stock market is a function of analyzing trends that are occurring every day, realizing how the trends will effect economic conditions and what will be the necessary economic assets necessary to service the conditions. No Tim May may have had some luck in picking his stocks but remember "The race may not always go to the swiftest, or the fight to the strongest. Buts that's they way the smart money bets." The Independent of Clackamas County, Oregon "The great questions of the day will not be settled by means of speeches and majority decisions ... but by iron and blood." He's likely an academic, maybe a Phd., but not necessarily licensed to treat patients. He cannot legally prescribe medications. He is a researcher and may legally give you advice but he is not on the same level as a doctor. A Psychiatrist is a doctor licensed to treat patients and prescribe meds. He may also be a Psychologist because, as logic would dictate, he must have been a student of psychology. Strider |

A simple fracture of the lower leg is remedied today just as it was then, an x-ray, setting and time and materials for a cast. For a cash payment and adjusting for inflation, one would assume that the differences would first be in additional paperwork, plant overhead, material costs or salaries. If it still doesn't jive then waste, corruption and profit margins are the issue. I assume perceived value of a mended leg is the same. Today, you would likely be referred to an orthopedist, or the on-call orthopedist would come to the ER to set your leg. Additional imaging may be ordered. You would also likely get physical therapy services. If it is a difficult or complicated fracture, surgery may be in order, and the odds of full recovery are much greater. Complication rates are also lower today than in years gone by, when your leg may have been set by a GP in the ER. There is a qualitative difference in the care received. Jeff I said, a 'simple fracture'. What would have taked two hours and a few dollars in materials today takes a day and $1500-$2000+. The other notable high priced service is law. Not a coincidence that both involve life threatening issues. Maybe we are over-doctored as well as over-lawyered? Jeff |

Tim May, was it "luck" (was Gunner: I'm back)
I don't have any doubts. Anyone can become rich in any time period if
they work at it just a little. The Standard and Poors Index 500 has on the average returned about 10% per year. Some years much more, some years big losses, but an average of 10% per year compounded. The problem is most people do not save a percentage of what they earn. It doesn't even take any skill or luck. Dan Retief wrote in message Tim was in the right place, at the right time, and with some careful thought (to minimize, but never eliminate luck), he was successful in his stocks. That's still what we call luck, Tim. If it wasn't luck, then Tim could do the same, in any time period, with any available stocks, and any (however limited) amount of capital. Some years much more, some years big losses, but an average of 10% per year compounded. The problem is most people do not save a percentage of what they earn. It doesn't even take any skill or luck. This is mostly the power of compounded interest, as you say. It's often more than just simple compounding, as it represents ownership in the future, and thus the amplification of wealth overall. For some here, it may be too late (too old, too much learned helplessness). But for any of you reading this who are under the age of 30, get out your calculator and see what the power of compounded interest is all about. I covered a lot of these points in a long article entitled "Life Choices." A lot of people seemed to have liked it. Survivalism is an important meme, or idea. But some of the most important parts of survival have to do with finding a solid career, not getting sucked under by deadweight spouses and friends, saving and investing, and pursuing work that is both rewarding and enriching. These are some of the themes covered by some of the writers we often cite here, folks like Robert Heinlein, Ayn Rand, and others. While they don't provide recipe books for how to find friends and spouses, what to do when a job lays you off, and similar "short term, self-help" advice, the messages are there if one fully absorbs the messages of achievement, self-reliance, and even "paranoia." One of my old bosses at Intel, the famous Andy Grove, had a saying which got a lot of attention, most negative (from the liberal press): "Only the paranoid survive." This means being paranoid about saving for a rainy day just as it means buying firearms, just as it means speculating about the consequences of a comet hitting the earth. Of course, losing a job is a lot more likely than a comet strike is, so it makes sense to prepare for this. I did so from my first months at Intel, building up my store of saved money, what we used to call " '**** you!' money," for obvious reasons. The people who couldn't escape the "company store" were the people who have never saved enough of this " '**** you!' money." Same as with people trapped in their jobs because they can't afford to break free, or to move from a dying town. Saving money is even more important that buying firearms. Heresy, to some, but absolutely true. --Tim May |

Gunner: I'm back
There was an article in the newspaper that indicated that the service
jobs pay a bit higher than factory jobs. Don't forget that service jobs include stock brokers, insurance salesmen, bankers, computer service desk jobs, web page designers........... It would be nice if everyone could have a high paying job. Maybe we should raise the minium wage to $30 / hour. Dan RainLover wrote in message I find it interesting that Bush is raving about all the NEW JOBS, even though the vast majority of those are low-paying service jobs. A full time McDonald's worker makes $20k a year and no health benifits... THESE are the jobs that are on the increase. The "haves" always love to think that if THEY have a good job and enough money and savings, EVERYONE should be able to have that and the 'have nots' are just lazy. Of course, the "haves" are wrong.
