service was *accidentally* disconnected at the "main box" and I had to
wait for a tech to come visit to find that out. Well, I got 90 days of
free movie channels for my displeasure, so long as I remember to cancel it.

Anyway, in the last few days I've heard a woodpecker working away at my
roof. What a racket they make and I can't even imagine the damage!
Before the woodpecker I'd been looking into bird deterrents to keep away
sparrows that nest in the soffet over the front door every spring and
make a mess with their droppings, and was looking at owl decoys. I
ordered one from Amazon that hoots and has a motion sensor and turns
toward detected movement, but it came and the head was broken off. So
back it went. I found a less expensive one that just has a bobble head
but it's solar powered so that even if there isn't wind, it will still
occasionally move its head. I put that on the front porch to hopefully
keep away the sparrows.

Back to the woodpecker. Is there anything that can act as a deterrent
to them? Also at Amazon i found streamers made from Mylar that has a
holographic print and the movement in the wind and the reflected light
is supposed to scare birds away. Anyone have any success with something
like this? And where to place it?

more info and choices than you probably want to wade through.

I think they mostly come once I've left for work. I heard one over the
weekend and it was LOUD. I might not know if the bird flash or the owl
decoy works until this weekend. I did a little more searching and found
that a hawk decoy is more effective since they hunt during the day and
the birds would know their shape better than an owl, who hunts at night.

One site is even selling balloons with the bird flash ribbon
combination. What a killing they are probably making!

I haven't seen yet on the siding or the roof where it is pecking, but I
have a good idea base on the sound I heard. I will look more for damage
this weekend.

Thanks. Got one to try to scare off sparrows before I knew I had a
woodpecker problem. I might get another one for that side of the house.

I had a customer put up some big owl decoys to scare off the pigeons
that were messing up the roof of his restaurant. I climbed up on the
roof to check an AC unit and saw a pigeon screwing the decoy with a
line of 20 pigeons waiting their turn. ^_^

I have heard that CD's, particularly country western and Mormon Tabernacle
Choir music, will deter birds. Just hang on a string, and they are very
reflective, twirling in the breeze. I believe I may try it this year in our
fruit trees. There has to be a use for all those CDs I have accumulated,
and I imagine it would cost about $5 for a truckload if you could find
someone who has a bunch of junk ones.

They are also good for target practice unless you shoot the hole in the
middle.

The bird flash streamer stuff has been effective! But he moved to a spot
without any, so I have to hang more. Turns out the little pecker isn't
pounding at the siding, he's going after the metal gutter. What a
racket it makes. I figure he's trying to attract a mate.

If you get enough streamer stuff on your house, does that
attract Mardi Gras drunks instead? I wonder why woodpeckers
don't get headaches. Maybe they do?
