We got hit pretty hard over night (Monday night)
with freezing rain that turned to ice. I had an
experience today that has me pondering on how
better to be prepared in the future.

I was at home working around the house. I heard
someone yelling my name over and over from out-
side. It sounded like my neighbor and my first
thought was "Oh God, he's fallen in my driveway"
but when I opened the door he wasn't there but
still calling my name, so I looked down to his house
(2 houses over) and there he was lying on the
ground by his truck, in a pair of shorts, tshirt and
moccassins. He said "Call 911 I've broken my leg".

My stupid Verizon cell phone would not call out
to 911 (I've had this problem before and they said
they didn't know why, time definitely for new
phones). Anyways, I called my friend across the
street and had her call 911. I got on my boots and
coat and tried to walk across my yard and could
not move, it was solid thick sheet of ice so I could
not get to him. He said "I'm so cold" my other
friend had her teen girls run over with a blanket to
cover him till the emergency squad came.

We had 300 emergency room visits today in our
city from people falling and getting hurt on the ice.

gotten to him without falling and breaking my leg,
back, neck too was if I had those ski things, don't
know what they are called but they are hand held
sticks that skiers use to guide them in the snow.
Would that work? And of course, our driveway
and streets were even worse.

his knee instead and will have surgery tommorow.

idea, is the one time I got my van stuck on ice, a
salt truck spreading salt helped me to get enough
traction to get off the ice. If you had enough rock
salt or kitty litter, you might have been able to
spread salt in front of yourself.

climbers have something called "crampons" which
strap on like the old roller skates. But which have
wicked sharp points to dig into ice.

Golf cleat shoes may have beeen useful. I'm less

In Canada where winter ice is frequent some shoe
stores sell crampon kits to attach to shoes or boots.
We keep one pair in the car glove box and another
in the house, and need them a dozen times a year,
e.g. walking 25 yards to the mailbox. Highways
are heavily salted in icy weather (with consequent
rust damage to vehicles.)

You can buy slip on crampons to go over your shoes. I have
a pair in the closet I bought last year to have just in case.
If I really need to go out in the ice I will just slip them
on to my shoes and go.

with spiked tips to grip ice. There are also clamp-on spiked thingies
to put on your feet (for ice fishing?). Best of all, stay indoors when
the weather guy and authorities tell ya' to. We haven't (yet) gotten
the freezing rain that had been predicted, but it ain't over yet. Snow
is crusted over, with sleet? crusted on top. Two kids snowed in, one at
work...one on a farm with horses. Her county is geared up to rescue
those caught with power outages or other emergencies. Propane low, wood
stove goin'.

Hearing from Chicago now with all the folks stuck on Lake Shore Drive
who are mad at the mayor (again) because they can't get out. Hell,
Mayor Byrne lost the next election because she didn't stop the all-time
record breaking blizzard. During that blizzard, it took my mom eight
hours to drive home from work - one did not get snowed in in the
neighborhood where she worked. And the stranded motorists were stunned
that the CPD didn't send their heroes in to rescue them. New in town,
apparently )

blocks from school and normal transit time was about five minutes.
After this ice storm, couldn't walk on sidewalks so walked on tree
lawns. Took an hour to get there and find the campus flooded - then
walked through ankle deep water to get to the building. No big deal )

I didn't go to the ER, but I did get a concussion yesterday. Slipped on ice
under the snow and was on my back before I even realized I was falling,
banged the back of my head on the ice. Scary for a few seconds because at
first, I could not move at all. I'll have some effects for a few days, at
least. I'm not going out at al today.

Thick woolen sock over the shoes should give traction, but the skipoles
are also helpful, or bellyflopping if you like that (see the videos of
pinguins moving over ice/snow).

Scattering some sand or kitty litter over the ice would help.

Or maybe take some ice skating lessons so you learn how to balance
better while slipping around.

Learn how to fall properly so you don't hurt yourself too bad.

My son found a funny story yesterday about the "older" generation, ca.
1980 ) I did recently, for the first time in my life, hear a pack of
coyotes howling in the woods behind our house...they were probably a
block or two distant. Awesome, haven't seen one in the wild yet. This
fall, the two local towns had open hunting for deer with bow and
arrow...90 deer taken, and they are still plentiful. 5 or 6 in the yard
last evening. My school days were completely lacking in mountains,
wolves, bears, homeless, addicts, etc. Worst event in my neighborhood,
while I was growing up, was a neighbor whose purse was grabbed on the
street. And the nice Buick that was stolen. We took the subway
downtown to shop, alone, when we were 11 or 12. No big deal, no worry.
Chicago was much safer when I was growing up than the small town where
I raised my children.

I know mayor is mostly an administrative post, (except in NYC where

Sorry to hear that and hope you are okay. I'm 67 and have gotten
really, really cautious on ice and snow; indoors, too, with nightlights,
etc. Have been out shoveling some of our driveway today, taking time
out. Grandsons will finish. I figure if it doesn't kill me, it is good
exercise, carefully and in moderation. This snow is crusty on top and
very heavy. Still some discussion, I think, of the possibility of some
freezing rain for our area of N. Indiana (not lake)...don't want the
whole mess frozen in place.

Sounds like creepers, and tampons, I mean, Crampons. Same
idea. Strap onto boots or shoes, and provide sharp points to
dig into the ice.

I'd not have thought about carpet samples. Hmm. Wonder if
they help? Must.....

supply stores usually have them. I live on a farm. There
have been
several times I could not cross the driveway. I bought some
creepers
since, but even with them it's not always easy to walk on
some of the
worst ice. I found an easy solution. You need 2 throw rugs
or strips
of carpeting, 6 to 8 feet long. Lay one down, walk to the
end, lay
the next one, pick up the first one, put that ahead of the
one you are
on. It's slow, but it gets you across the ice. On the lawn
areas I
dont chovel them, so I just walk on the snow rather than the
sidewalk
or driveway.

In an emergency, the rugs work quite well, and most people
have them.
I should mention that the thicker ones or strips of
carpeting work
better than those cheap thin ones like people use in
bathrooms. I
have a few strips of actual carpet that I use to work under
my car,
and those work the best.

I'm glad the OP helped this guy and got the guy to a
hospital before
it got worse. (I agree with the new phones too).

Any place that caters to skiers, rock climbers, and winter campers.
Modern ones are like Totes overshoes, almost. I have an old-school pair
with chains and plates that you have to strap and buckle on. No idea on
price- just google 'crampons' or 'ice spikes for boots', and they should
come right up. The ones hard-core mountain climbers wear are scary- they
look like something Freddy Krueger would wear to stomp somebody.

We had 300 emergency room visits today in our
city from people falling and getting hurt on the ice.

I didn't go to the ER, but I did get a concussion yesterday. Slipped on
ice under the snow and was on my back before I even realized I was
falling, banged the back of my head on the ice. Scary for a few seconds
because at first, I could not move at all. I'll have some effects for a
few days, at least. I'm not going out at al today.

me to go to the doctor but I've nursed it myself and its getting better.
I walk daily for exercise and knew path was icy but did it anyway.
Now I'm sticking to walking indoors or using exercise bike.
I also fell using snow thrower, heard wife yell to be careful when I got
up and found her videotaping me. Someone said I could become a utube
sensation but I'll be damned if I'll upload it.

There are cheaper versions available, but these look like they won't fall
apart in a couple of uses. The re-studding kit is only six bucks, so if you
have an old pair of boots you could make you own ice-walkers and keep them
beside the door.

The cheap ones make me wonder not only how well they work but how long they
would last. The skinny bungee-cord designs would be convenient, but I have
to think 3/4" nylon webbing and a solid sole is going to stand up (so to
speak) a lot better. Sometimes cheap is false economy, and I don't heal as
fast as I used to.

I think the alert thingy only works in the house where the receiver is
and besides a Tracfone is much cheaper - $10 vs ~$30/month.

It is good for the confined elderly as it is always with them. I heard
of one couple using it to summon help when their house was being
burglarized.

Dad died over 10 years ago at age 88 but spent the last 5 years in a
nursing home after a stroke. The woman in the apartment below his heard
him banging on the floor but if he had the alert thingy and was able to
use it, it might have kept him out of the nursing home as rapid stroke
response can save the further brain injury that occurs thereafter.

There's a police athletic league a few minutes away where its a tenth
mile around the perimeter inside. I can't see driving a half hour to
the mall to walk a hour.

I've fallen several times when I used to run the park I walk in.
Prior to that, in my late forty's I had a bad spill from my bicycle and
am still carrying a metal plate and screws in my collar bone.

You can fall at any age but more so when older. I've quit doing a few
things I used to do when younger like climbing on the roof. An 84 year
old neighbor who died recently from cancer lost a few teeth last year
when he fell off his roof. Several years ago a 74 year old neighbor
died when a partially downed tree he was cutting fell on him.

back, neck too was if I had those ski things, don't
know what they are called but they are hand held

Your idea of ski poles may have worked. Another
idea, is the one time I got my van stuck on ice, a
salt truck spreading salt helped me to get enough
traction to get off the ice. If you had enough rock
salt or kitty litter, you might have been able to
spread salt in front of yourself.

will start occurring much more often. When its bad, you loose your
power,

I've fallen too many times, I suppose I take stupid risks and I have to
learn to take it easy. Got a concussion once that made me loose my
sense of taste and smell the next day, then it came back slowly in a
couple days. Scary! Nowadays they don't tell you to stay awake anymore
like they used to. Mostly get lots of rest and no sudden moves.

I don't know where my DH got them, but a few years ago he gave me a pair of
fit-over-the-boots crampons. They're designed to just put on over whatever
you're wearing, but after I stabbed myself twice trying to get them on and
off, I grabbed an old pair of slip-ons and the crampons just stay on them
all the time. I just put them on when I go out and leave them in the hall
when I come back inside. Haven't fallen on the ice since!

Thanks. I still have to move a little slow if I'm going to stand or get up
changing head position. A few other muscles are a little sore as I guess I
tensed up when falling. Happened so fast I don't know.

Don't fool around with a head injury my friend, if you get dizzy or feel
any lasting ill effects, please get checked out. You could at least give
your doctor a call and let him/her know what happened to you and ask for
their advice. I hope you're OK.

I could have used them during our last ice storm recently where I
slipped on my steep driveway. Fortunately I landed on all fours
and only received a few scrapes. I was a lot more careful after
that and stayed in until the danger passed. :-)

Blood pressure OK? While the concussion can have caused that, low blood
pressure can also.

As far as "Happened so fast I don't know" is concerned, I know about that.
One moment I was walking along an edge ~ 1.5 foot over a playground area,
the next I was flat on my back in the playsand, and my foot was on an
impossible angle to my leg. It's been almost 7 months since they put a
couple of plates and umpteen screws into my leg bones, and I'm basically
back to normal, but slower and with more aches. THis snow isn't helping.
