Store lawn mower with full or empty tank?
I've heard that you should use up all of the gas in the tank before
it's stored for the winter but I watched this Youtube video and the guy says Briggs and Stratton recommends to fill the tank before storage. What is the CW on this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY_vg5zvcrQ Here's the Briggs and Stratton site which says to only do so if you use their special additive. http://www.briggsandstratton.com/dis...sp?DocID=69956 |

Let it run dry then pull the cord a couple times. Since doing that I
havent had power equipment fail to start next season. I don't generally have any problems. I think keeping the tank full with stabilized fuel helps prevent rust in the tank if it's a metal tank, obviously not a factor for a plastic one. Running the carb dry keeps gunk from forming as the gas slowly evaporates. |

I've usually drained mine, but with stabilizer, it can last over the winter. Come to think of it, my mower has not had gas in it for two years now. I pay the neighbor to do mine now. |

I usally put the Stabil into the empty petrol container first before I go to the filling station. That way the Stabil is mixed well and acts on the "fresh" petrol. I have never had any issues with petrol deposits. I just store the mower over winter basically "as is". Half full, full or empty .... Best, Mike. |

Then remove the spark plug, squirt some into the cylinder and crank the engine a few times before replacing the plug. Of course a tarp over it to keep the dirt and dust off and you're done. TDD |

whens the last time you purchased "sta-bil" ???? A 10 oz bottle of Sta-Bil costs around $5. 10 oz will treat 25 gallons of gas. How much gas does a lawn mower hold? One half Gal at most ? That works out to be 50 years of Sta-Bil use from one bottle. $5 divided by 50 = 10 cents per year. either way, treat that last tank of fuel with stabilizer. when you
run one out of gas, there is still some fuel in the carb bowl that needs the stabilizer so it wont turn to gum. http://www.minibite.com/america/malone.htm |

[snip] Note -- Stabil has a shelf life -- I don't know what the spec says, but I do know that a two-year-old unopened bottle of Stabil had deteriorated and had to be thrown out, with black chunks of gunk floating in the liquid, so the shelf life is apparently less than two years -- I wonder if there's a product which can be used to prolong the life of Stabil -- |

Frank Well I did this with my old Honda mower for 20 years with no problem. Then I buy a new one 2 years ago and this spring the carburetor was wrecked from storing it with old gas. Maybe it was some cheap gas I used, I don't know, but It's a lot safer to just put the stabilizer in or drain it. I know I learned my lesson. |
