Gee Don by your description of their mental power I'm sure that a few of
them must be regular posters to this group.

When I was a young boy we lived on a farm where the sheep were able to graze
the front yard. My aunt from the city was visiting and needed to visit the
little house. Mother warned her to keep an eye on the buck as he would take
her if she didn't pay attention. Well the buck started to charge and she
ran for the house with the buck in hot pursuit. She came through the front
door and slammed it shut . The buck hit the door at speed and ended up with
his head through the door. I can remember how funny it looked having the
sheep standing there looking at me with its head through the door.

Sheep and me have a long history - none of it pleasant. Mainly due to
the fact that the damned things are so incredibly stupid that I'm
solidly convinced that *THE ENTIRE SPECIES* time-shares a grand total of
three brain-cells amongst 'em. --

Speaking of time sharing 3 brain cells, it appears the police hold that
in common with the sheep.
I suppose when the only tool at your disposal is a firearm then
everything begins to look like a target.

They simply couldnt toss a rope around its neck and drag it away?

Your max effective range with a lasso is less than 10 feet (those rodeo boys
are lassoing a calf that is running directly away in a known straight line,
not the same) When a sheep of that size doesn't want to be caught you are
out of luck because they won't let you get that close. They aren't bright
but they can outrun and outturn you easily and don't have handles (then
there's the lanolin issue). Had five of ours get loose, one was found dead
along side the road. Finally managed to get a neighbor with a trained sheep
dog to herd the remaining four into a small fenced in area. Then had the
dog chase them past us one by one so we could lasso them as they went by
which seemed like it took about an hour.

I hate frickin' sheep.

Steve.

LOL , English horse riding style roping !

Do cop cars have a supply of rope ?

I like the goat hate ones above. One time I visited at a place that
had a couple of goats and obviously wasn't thinking when I parked
under a tree for shade , with a week old paint job. Within 10 mins.
the biggest male was on the roof eating leaves. Never did look to see
the damage and sold the car 2 days later cause it didn't have AC.

I'd think it would be a prime opportunity to try
out the Taser gun.

Aye.

But we are talking about Swindon, which is a country town with delusions of
grandeur - it has tried and failed several times to become a city - and it's
a bit "agricultural". It's also a bit overproud of it's new roundabouts.

The cops there are probably more familiar with shotguns than most UK city
folk, and they'd want a chance to try their new guns* out on a live target -
after all they would get in trouble if they shot a person without good
reason - or at least more trouble than a US cop would get into.

* I'd bet a small amount the shot (if singular) came from a MP5.

Actually Ive roped sheep, goats and a wild boar once. The hog was not
amused...even a little bit...not even a smidgen....

Cost me a perfectly good 45' hemp lasso too...damnit.

I figured that the British were civilized enough to have some form of
animal control officer who was skilled with either a rope or a pole
and loop snare, to be able to snag that range maggot.

Shrug..

Well iffen they were just a bit smarter than the sheep they would have known
to rattle a bucket. I've yet to see a 1/2 domesticated animal that did not
run for the feed bucket, and would follow it anywhere. My children have had
4-H sheep projects for years. We feed the sheep that are to go to the
shows in the back of the pickup for a few days and after the show they will
actually walk out to the pick-up and jump in. People are amazed to watch.
Most of the people are fighting and trying to herd their sheep or literally
carrying them to their rigs. You have to be a bit smarter than the animal
that your trying to deal with.
