Mills, Drills and Reamers - How Do You Store Them?
Time to do a little shop reorganization...too many mills, drill bits
and reamers and not enough organization. I am looking for suggestions as to how you organize and store your drill bits, reamers and mill cutters? Thanks TMT |

I am looking for suggestions as to how you organize and store your drill bits, reamers and mill cutters? Thanks TMT ============ A lot will depend on the size, but I have found for the smaller/shorter tools that plastic reloading boxes work well. For example 1/4 X 1/4 X 2_1/4 lathe tool bits are a perfect fit in a 50 round 223 size box. The larger sizes 20 round boxes are great for putting a screw machine length tap drill, a screw machine length body, and a gun, taper, plug and bottoming tap all in one place so when you get ready to drill and tap you have everything. Standard length 5/8 and smaller end mills fit well also. Harbor Freight has these in their stores at good prices. For the smaller size stuff a piece of styrofoam works well, just "stab" the tool into the foam. Hoyt makes a reamer index, but I find it just as easy to keep the reamers in the shipping tubes. click on http://store.huot-store.com/tool-sto...dtri-ream.html for tool box style http://store.huot-store.com/tool-sto.../odc-ream.html cabinet style -- spendy but nice. Just keep everything under lock and key if this is at work. Also keep some dull/worn-out tooling as loaners for the "moochers" and/or decoys for the "borrowers." Unka' George [George McDuffee] ============ Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), U.S. president. Letter, 17 March 1814. |

IBM card files, library index files are both ideal. And, if you can get a
reasonable price, those Huot drawer thingies are really great too "Too_Many_Tools" wrote in message oups.com... I am looking for suggestions as to how you organize and store your drill bits, reamers and mill cutters? At home, I'm ashamed to say I toss 'em all in a box. At work, we keep them in plastic apocathary-style cabinets with stick on labels on each drawer- which works really well. Keep meaning to get one of those, but it never seems to happen. Thanks TMT |

I am looking for suggestions as to how you organize and store your drill bits, reamers and mill cutters? Thanks TMT I have two different systems. For drill bits and taps, and special cutters under about 6" length, I use one of those 72 drawer organizers from Fry's or OSH. I used a labelmaker to mark the drawers for each tap size from 0-80 to 1/2"-13, NC and NF, and pipe taps, and drill bits from 1/16"-3/8" and some letter and number bits. I also have a similar drawer system, fewer but larger drawers, which I use for larger dill bits, reamers, dovetail cutters, ball end mills, etc. My normal end mills over 1/4" get stored in a very shallow, heavy duty drawer in my workbench. Finally, I use an old three drawer tool chest with one drawer devoted to reamers, drill rod pieces, etc., one drawer to turning cutters, and one drawer for boring bars. ww88 |

Hold that thought!!! I'll pick one up on the Sunday we hook up- my cart is a
Tetanus shot in the making!! I normally stuff them into styro foam as mentioned earlier. I do the same thing when rebuilding engines. A panel for the valve train, one for the lower and bearings and then pitch it out when done.... keeps every part in it's reassembly spot. Rob |

That cabinet, also, has a bazillion of taps. We can separate them etc. I will email you some pix. i |

Hmmm..I ask metalworking questions and a conservative wants to introduce politics into the discussion. Now who is the problem? ;) Instead of causing a problem here, please explain to us in another discussion group why Bush is going to once again deny health care to children? I await the excuse as do the children who will suffer. So back on topic, how do you organize and store your drill bits, reamers and mill cutters? TMT |

How old is the car their parents drive and how many tvs do they have?- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Posting from a different account, are we? I take it that the plan is to continue to harass me because you lost an argument. LOL Need I remind you that your IP address is easily gotten through the Patriot Act. Now the current subject is the storing of drills, reamers and mills. Please take the discussion of the children health care bill that Bush is going to veto AGAIN to another discussion group and we can talk about it there...that is if you really want to address the issue of the Republicans denying health care to one out of ten children in this Country. He strikes me as a guy that doesn't hide behind a made up handle and if you checked the server bang path, it came from multiple servers which is trivial as anyone that has played with usenet for any time knows. Republicans started SChip, are willing to reauthorize it, but don't want a minimum level program to get into areas where adults are getting insured. Basically the Democrats are trying to use this to expand socialized health care using the children as a prop. A very effective tactic but so far the Republicans and some Democrats are showing some stones. Especially when it isn't clear if illegal aliens will be covered in this bill. Tell me, how many enacted bills have you read? If you have read one you might be a head of your Congressperson. These things are written by a bunch of lawyers that can with one sentance change the purpose of the proposed bill into something totally opposite of what it is advertized as. Not to mention drop ins that are totally unrealated to the bill but have serious effects on our rights under the Constitution. We have too much goverment. A citizen is supposed to know the law as in, "I didn't know that isn't a defense". Show me someone that knows the whole body of law that applies to him, let alone the body of law that is currently contested. Wes |

And if you wish to review the Google archives, I have had a death threat from him in one of his dumber moments. He understands I mean business in regards to handling that threat. So whoever it is, when the envelope is pushed far enough the authorities will take care of the problem. In regards to the child insurance issue (which should be discussed elsewhere), it matters little about "the law"...in this country there is NO excuse for allowing children to go without adequate health care....NONE. Anyone who considers it ethical to allow a child to suffer medically is morally corrupt. If you have a problem with the parents, take it up with them...you don't allow the childrent to be political pawns...which is what Bush is doing. While on many issues I consider that there are many grey areas of opinion, in this one I am a black and white believer...there is no middle ground. My opinon is shared by millions of Americans both Democrat and Republican and Bush's behavior is going to cost the Republicans elections in 2008. I know it has cost the Republicans my vote. TMT |
