I agree to the extent that with guns, as with cars, swimming pools, riding
lawnmowers, elevators, hippies, and thousands of other things, one has to
accept an occasional disaster in order for the greater good to exist.

But as long as *I* have a gun, the chances of the other guy dying and me
living are much greater than the alternative.

Heh! The "poor" in America have a far better standard of living than the
"middle class" in most of the world. Virtually every "poor" person in
America has access to a vehicle, owns a cell phone, microwave, color TV, and
lives in a dwelling with air conditioning. Not one single person has starved
to death in the U.S. in the last 80 years (in fact, quite the reverse).

In short, it is better to be a "poor" American than an affluent Somalian.
