I was giving serious thought to a Volt. Had occasion to rent a car this

and out of it anymore.

The Volt looks a bit larger but I've only ever seen a couple of them.
They need much more range to be practical but that is improving.

I also wonder how well the climate control works in extreme
temperatures. As I get older, the creature comforts become more important.

Again, little advantage for the extra cost up front. I drove probably 80

Well at least they are cheap to buy used. I was reading that the average
electric looses half their value in only 2 years. So either they are not as
good as what initial owners expected or troublesome.

I imagine they would be very cheap to buy as the battery life is nearing
its end. I've heard numbers of $2500 and up after 8 year warranty.

Like everything else, it should get better as technology advances. I'd
like to see more fuel cell cars.It will take some time for the
infrastructure to expand. Right now, if you run out of fuel you have to
be towed to a fuel depot. Fuel is free if you lease a Hyundai Tucson
with fuel cell.

That is what everyone hopes (and is a big part of why the
auto makers are using hybrid powertrains in Formula 1 and
Le Mans racing - there is nothing like competition to force
improvements).

But there has been a huge effort to improve batteries over
the last decade or more, with little to show for it. There
are excellent long life batteries - but they weigh tons.
There are excellent low weight batteries - but they have to
be kept hot, well over 200 degrees. There are low weight,
low temp batteries - but they can't discharge fast enough
to run a motor.

Everyone is hoping for a huge breakthru in batteries, the
one solution that's light, room temp, high capacity, high
discharge, but nothing looks real promising right now.

I'd
like to see more fuel cell cars.It will take some time for the
infrastructure to expand. Right now, if you run out of fuel you have
to be towed to a fuel depot. Fuel is free if you lease a Hyundai
Tucson with fuel cell.

Like CNG, fuel cells need to be introduced and debugged in
captive service - things like post office vehicles, that always
run a predictable route, and can be refuelled at the same places
every day. I don't think you'll see fuel cells for general use
for a long time, if ever.

Well at least they are cheap to buy used. I was reading that the
average electric looses half their value in only 2 years. So either
they are not as good as what initial owners expected or troublesome.

I imagine they would be very cheap to buy as the battery life is
nearing its end. I've heard numbers of $2500 and up after 8 year
warranty.

Like everything else, it should get better as technology advances.

So what specific problems do you know of with the Honda FCX Clarity,
Hundai ix35, and the Toyota Mirai, other than limited fuel distribution
and high manufacturing cost?

Well, obviously those are the two big ones - there are
something like 10 or 15 hydrogen refueling stations in
California, and 14000 gas stations, so building a comparable
distribution infrastructure is a huge obstacle.

And, manufacturing cost is a chicken and egg thing - now
it is very high (Toyota looses $100,000 on every one
they build), and while the expectation is that if
they're built in large volumes cost will come down, it's
questionable if anyone will be willing to take the losses
while building the volume.

Those are the two reasons why I say they should be
introduced in a captive market like the post office.
You immediately get a substantial volume (since all
post office trucks are the same), and you don't need
much refueling infrastructure.

The third thing hanging over the head of fuel cell
vehicles is efficiency. End-to-end (i.e. including
the cost of making the hydrogen) they are substantially
less efficient than plug-in electrics. If recharging
stations continue to appear at the rate they have been,
electic cars will capture the market before fuel-cell
has a chance.

Recharging stations do it. They're fine for someone commuting but there
are too many other cases where the short range and long charge time
don't work out.

People don't want to be pinned within a 40 mile radius of their house.

Sounds a bit like Edison/Tesla, DC/AC. Where do we invest?

We probably should be investing in both until there is a clear winner.
I don't know if it is 5 years or 50,000 years. but oil will run out.

It would work for my wife. Most she goes in a day is 10 miles. She
uses my hand-me-down car though, I'm not spending $30k+ for 1000 miles a
year.

That tells you everything you need to know. If even the CA nuts don't

Nonsense. There is no point in investing until it's needed. As/if
oil "runs out" it won't happen overnight. The cost of oil will
increase and there will be plenty of time to develop whatever
infrastructure will be needed. It's far better to allow this to
happen than force the issue. Picking winners and losers now is a
fools game. Government doing it is far, far, worse.

Exactly. The price of oil will most likely stabilize (my guess
$40-$50/bbl) because OPEC has been effectively busted. Fracking and
shale will effectively buffer prices.

i want to relate this to wood somehow

i heard that nuclear power plants are so expensive to build and maintain
and dispose of and decommission that we could create at least as much
and possibly more energy by burning all the urban tree trimmings to
boil water

bushes and leaves too

but in austria they have a device that converts trash into energy via plasma
conversion
this method leaves zero emissions

for austria it was so successful that they actually began importing trash
from finland

people have tried to get this done in US but of course all the useful idiots
are in all the right places and so landfills keep growing

i see in a quick search there is a plant in florida

Same goes for the electric cars. A Toyota Prias was compared to a
Hummer as far as total energy consumption to build the vehicles, power
the vehicles, and eventually dispose of the vehicles.

all aspects considered, the Hummer was kinder to the environment.

Unfortunately not. Here in Broward (Florida) we incinerate a
significant proportion of the trash (including trees and yard
waste); that produces about 66MW of power. By comparision a
small steam (coal/gas) plant would be around 300MW, and a
typical nuclear plant would be around 2000MW. A big steam
plant can be over 5000MW (altho there aren't any that large
in the US).

While recovering energy from trash certainly helps (and is
carbon neutral), there's not enough of it to replace other
energy sources.

But the Hummer doesn't give the owner the warm fuzzy feelings that the
Pious does.

That still doesn't tell the story of the far left voting to close down
and convert a fully powered and Just certified Nuclear plant and turn it
into a gas fired plant at massive cost to the citizens for many years.
Oh - Sacramento Ca. was the place. Brand new and shinny plant that took
twenty years of red tape to build in the first place.

One thinks Bio-fuel is cost low. Gas is low. Bio-fuel - wood chips and
stumps and junk wood - costs to much to make electric power.
We have such a plant here in town. I knew the management. The chips
are worth more to make boards and paper. The forest that was flattened
by a Hurricane - you didn't hear of it, it was the one just after the
one that hit the party town of La. We had deaths and massive damage.
Those forest burned in part due to lighting hitting the felled trees.
A real mess. But the trees are to far away with the outrageous high
value for truck fuel to truck it 100 miles. So a plant was built
down there and it is running on burnt wood. Just dirty but it is good.

not sure what you meant but i found this

maybe the unfortunately not was referring to something else
or is the plant in the link above no longer operational

also incineration is messy and not as efficient as plasma

nuclear is a fancy or stupid way to boil water too

That's not unique. They did it on Long Island, too. The government
allowed low-powered tests, poisoning the reactor, then shut it down
all at the expense of the rate and tax payers.

Alternate energy anybody?

i want to relate this to wood somehow

i heard that nuclear power plants are so expensive to build and maintain
and dispose of and decommission that we could create at least as much
and possibly more energy by burning all the urban tree trimmings to
boil water

bushes and leaves too

but in austria they have a device that converts trash into energy via plasma
conversion
this method leaves zero emissions

for austria it was so successful that they actually began importing trash
from finland

people have tried to get this done in US but of course all the useful idiots
are in all the right places and so landfills keep growing

i see in a quick search there is a plant in florida

all aspects considered, the Hummer was kinder to the environment.

too many variables in such an argument for me to be swayed either way
lies damn lies and statistics

anyway the real problem is the false scarcity paradigm under which we
all live

But the Hummer doesn't give the owner the warm fuzzy feelings that the
Pious does.

Oh, I think it does. LOL I think I would much rather be caught dead in
the Hummer than the Prius.
