That's how it all works.

Actually in the last many years that explanation no longer holds water.
There is a good supply and relatively low demand.

What drives gasoline prices now is "what the market will bare".

I cab buy upper tier gasoline from Chevron at 2.87 and one block north
pay 3.09 at Exxon a lower tier station.

Chevron here is at least $.30 higher than everyone else. BP (no
Exxon) is a nickel more.

What the market will bare..... Chevron and Shell in Houston tend to be
the very competitive in price with Exxon, Phillips, Texaco, Citgo, etc.
Often less expensive than the lower tier stations.

"What the market will bear" is *exactly* "supply and demand".

Gasoline prices are pretty much set at what a particular station thinks
it can or wants to charge.

What's not Econ 101 about that?

Not a thing. You charge what you can get away with.

OK, so we agree. "What the market will bear" == "supply and demand"

I have a smart phone app that shows local gasoline prices and the prices
differ greatly within a few miles even among the same brands.

Sure. Econ 101.

Exactly and if supply and demand was driving the prices the prices would
not be fluctuating so greatly in a close area.

Sure it would. There is some sensitivity to price between brands
which will force change but some have preferences for one vs. another.

By "differ greatly" you probably mean plus or minus 10%. Price
differences in other "staples" such as food and clothing can very MUCH
more than that. When the difference in gas prices is plus or minus 30%,
y'all let us know.

I'm not sure where you were going with that. I was pointing out that
supply and demand is not what is causing the relatively wide fluctuation
in prices in "gasoline" within a one mile radius.

It is supply and demand. People are using something other than price
to determine where to buy.

No, the rule of supply and demand is when the supply is limited or the
demand goes up the price goes up. We have neither.

Yes we do, in fact. You have a limitation on real estate. People are
paying for convenience, not just gasoline.

Two different places with in walking distance of each other with a price
fluctuation of 10% is simply charging what the market will bare.

People are also brand sensitive (for several reasons). Supply and
demand still holds. The point is that it's not just "gasoline" that's
for sale.

When I say differ greatly, I mean for example you can go one mile west
to the Chevron station and pay 22 cents per gallon less than if you one
mile east to the Exxon station. Which way are you going to go??

Obviously, some are willing to pay more to buy *there*.

Obviously the price of gasoline is not set by supply and demand.

You're wrong. It is *exactly* set by supply and demand but it's not
only gasoline that's for sale. It's Exxon vs Chevron that's for sale.
Different products.

By the same
logic, you're saying that home prices aren't decided by "supply and
demand", either?

No, only you have mentioned housing.

It's the same thing. Location matters.

In that example it is all about how much are you willing to pay.

Do the prices at Exxon go up and down with the prices at Chevron? If
not, maybe I could buy your argument but I'll bet they do.

Absolutely not! I have seen the Exxon prices go up and the Chevron
prices go down and visa verse, but the Chevron station is always 20+
cents less expensive than the Exxon station. None of the gasoline
prices in the Houston metro area go up and down at the same time or in
the same direction. The stations have plenty of play in their pricing
strategies.

Over a period of time? Sure, for a day (or less, now, with
centralized/Internet control over these things) but I've never seen
one station trend high when everyone else was trending low.

That Chevron station is always 5-10% lower than the local competition.

I understand what you are saying here but the Houston market is
apparently different. The stations in the comparison are pretty much
the same in terms of convenience. Both stations have to be passed at
one of the main entrances to enter the large community. The other
entrance has not stations. So both are passed when entering or exiting
the community from that particular entrance. The upper tier Chevron
station, the one with the better gasolines is always significantly less
expensive than the less desirable Exxon. Neither stations pricing is a
predictor of what the other station pricing is going to do when going up
or down. And again it is not unusual to see a 30 cent price difference
between the stations and the higher price station is typically in line
with the average pricing in the general area.

Both stations offer a convenience store and naturally the less expensive
station has a load oc cars pumping gas. Now yesterday when I filled up
there was only a 10 cent difference, last week there was a 28 cent
difference.

Now if you still think that supply and demand is the driving factor for
the pricing I'll let you be satisfied by that. But It is apparent that
there is a wide difference in pricing so profit margins are greater than
one might think since many stations follow their competitors lead in
raising or lowering prices. So I see that the higher price station is
simply charging more because he wants to make more profit per gallon.

And FWIW, I have seen SAME BRAND stations with in a block of each other
on the same street have a 10 price difference. The only convenience
difference is that the lower price station is easier to afford.

When I say differ greatly, I mean for example you can go one mile west

The price differential between different stations in the same region is
where the "supply and demand" argument becomes totally inoperative/bull****.

Not to mention, when the company raises the price +.10/gallon from
morning to afternoon, as they often do, the unsold gas in the ground
tanks, presumably bought at a "supply and demand" price that would
insure adequate profit/margins, is now worth .10/gallon more to that
profit/margin.

The old argument that this is justifiable because they will have to pay
more to refill the tanks is bull****. Whatever they pay for the next
tanker load already has their margin/profit built-in to the price the
consumers will pay.

Local/regional prices do have a "supply and demand" component regarding
product price to the consumer, but it certainly nowhere near the
magnitude some would have you believe.

This is one business that operates under one basic, guiding principle,
and one principle only ... "Charge what the traffic will bear".

Right, but its price must then move around with everyone else's.
Supply/demand is part of the cost. Convenience, marketing, or

Supply and demand is *not* suspended.

Not quite. Abbreviations are formed by the initial letters of a
phrase. An Acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounceable. If the
abbreviation isn't pronounceable, it's also called an "initialism".

These components may be individual letters (as in
laser) or parts of words (as in Benelux and Ameslan).

"LASER" is an acronym (though "laser" has been promoted into a word).
"NSA" is an abbreviation or "initialism".

There is no
universal agreement on the precise definition of various names for such
abbreviations (see nomenclature) nor on written usage (see orthographic

historically had limited use, but they became much more common in the
20th century. Acronyms are a type of word formation process, and they
are viewed as a subtype of blending.

Yes, "LASER" was an acronym that has been promoted into the word
"laser", but that isn't all that common. For the most part, acronyms
don't live long enough in common usage.

Lew

And there you go again Lew.. Stop jerking us around. Your rant does not
do anything to resolve the issue.

And the fact that Lew is keeping the energy issue in everyone's
attention is obviously annoying you. I would suggest that you block
(plonk!) these messages. The subject is constant so a filter on that
would do the job nicely. Just sayin'.

Alternately, you could take Lew's data and keep a running plot (text
based) which would in turn annoy others in this group. Just sayin'.

Alternate energy anybody?

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that a data point for the month
Sept-2012 is still missing?
I mean, you'd end up with a graph with a hole in it...

Jeff is correct. A litany of local gas prices have no practical
usefulness whatsoever, no scientific basis, and certainly, in no way
shape of form, does anything to alleviate a perceived problem, or keep
the "energy issue" in focus ... in a ****ing woodworking forum? ....
gimme a break.

Basically the folks most concerned with gasoline prices are those who
must buy it. Therefore, someone voicing their concern in this particular
forum, and in this repeated manner, is exercising more than bit of
hypocrisy in doing so.

In that light, Lew would do his cause more good by providing something
personally indicative of his beliefs, other than this weekly public
guilt trip transference attempt.

Let's hear from him about a bicycle being his ONLY means of
transportation, other than shank's mare, private of otherwise; that his
basic necessities, food shelter and clothing, are completely void of all
hydrocarbon fuel requirements in their production, transportation and
delivery to his table; and that he is totally off the grid (we already
know that the latter is not the case, because he posts in bits and bytes
on this forum).

Otherwise, let's call subject thread what it observably proves to be ...
an arguable display of condescending hypocrisy, nicely supporting the
observation that some of a certain political persuasion will rarely miss
an opportunity to attempt to transfer their feelings of guilt to others,
in a manner the more condescending and public the better.

Sorry, I felt sort of ashamed after I "noticed that pattern" I when
through and checked that each month was present : )

Name calling is a child's disease.

And progressive/liberal policies are routinely childlike in an obvious,
immature inability to foresee the unintended consequences of their actions.

You have to look no further for the highly visible effect of that than
in places like Detroit and Chicago.

Location, location, location, Right?

But on a serious note Lew and maybe this is just the way liberals think,
do you complain here because you expect us to do something about it for you?

Were you never taught that if you don't like something you should expect
no one except yourself to change the situation and look out for yourself?

But on a serious note Lew and maybe this is just the way liberals
think, do you complain here because you expect us to do something
about it for you?

Were you never taught that if you don't like something you should
expect no one except yourself to change the situation and look out
for yourself?

Huh?

Just the messenger son.

No one is twisting your arm to be a nuisance. This is all on you.

Liberalism, no longer just a child hood disease.

Lew has been posting this thread since "Friday
afternoon (02/26/11)". Should be no surprise to what the subject of this
thread about

"Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

No one is twisting my arm to read this thread. I have enjoyed some of
the responses, some, not so much.

If you take the time to look up the definition of the word "subject",
you will undoubtedly be the one "surprised".

That said, too bad he won't do the rest of the participants the courtesy
of marking same "OT".

It started life as O/T; however, somewhere along the way,
O/T was removed by the software or perhaps a responder.

I know when I open a message in the thread, I expect to see details
statistics about how close we are to "flood stage", but I'm the son of a
civil engineer. "Flood stage is the water level as read by a gauge
for a body of water a particular location, measured from the level at
which a body of water threatens lives, property, commerce, or travel."

As my civil engineering associates (The non structural engineering

often remind me, it may be crap to you but it's money to us.

Dude, get with the second decade of the 21st century!

Don't see it much on Usenet as you do on web based forums, particularly
those with a younger demographic, which removes most woodworkers.

Thanks for asking Jeff. I was clueless to.
Maybe we should rename this newsgroup rec.woodworking.hood,
or rec.gangsta.woodworking and see if we attract any new visitors! : )
