Default Car dash cameras

I'm thinking of buying a dash camera for the car, as I nearly had someone
drive into me in the Co-op
car park yesterday.
Any recommendations from the NG?

I recently went with the Nextbase 422GW as recommended by Which?

Seems to be fine, but I have not really played with it.

Nextbase range of cameras are the most recommended. I have the the 622GW with rear camera pretty much feature packed although I have not had time to fully play around with it so far. Quite impressed with the image quality which at the end of the day is the most important factor.

I had a really dirt cheap one and the picture quality was great. I didn't
like its appearance on the windscreen, I never got around to hiding the
wires and also found its power supply messed with my DAB radio.

I would suggest choosing based on how it will look on the windscreen -
assume the picture quality will be okay.

You can get ones which fit over the rear view mirror which may be less

Nextbase are a good brand and have very good customer service if you have any queries or problems.

Be aware that you can get special Micro SD memory cards suited to dashcams - they are designed to stand up to the
constant writing and re-writing that dashcams do

I bought a next base 112 on ebay for around £24, quite happy with it and

Unless you buy a particulary bad one that gets 2* reviews you should be
OK. Mine was about £50 random brand full HD decent with fast lens on it.

That is about the only thing where they differ. Some do better low light
images and sharper images than others (that is worth having).

When you attach it make sure that the pivot usually a ball and socket is
firmly tightened. Otherwise the first time you have to do an emergency
stop you will get a picture of the sky. My nearest ever miss with a deer
ending up 10cm off the nearside bonnet and all I got was its ears.

Seemed like ages when it happened - on playback 2s and it was all over.

Thats one of the reasons I think they shouldnt
be visible and can tell you over the phone when
the car is being broken into or stolen.

And the other is so you can say nothing
about it if you caused the accident.

Sometimes the hassle is disconnecting the power whist still trying to
keep the power lead neat and hidden inside the roof lining etc.

After a while the new toy is less of a novelty and more of an annoyance
if being removed every time you get out of the car. I guess that most
people with a after market dash cam leave it there 24/365.

Except for an MOT. If it's anywhere in your field of view, it's a fail.

The first time my car had an MOT the garage phoned to say it would fail
if they didn't remove the dashcam, so I told them to take it off. The
daftest thing about this is that it is completely hidden by the sun
visor! So if that's down it blocks far more than the dashcam does. Add
to that the car's central camera/sensor console, which blocks even more
from your field of view through the windscreen, and it all makes even
less sense.

And the advice for where you can legally place a dashcam only mentions
places at the edge of the screen or behind the rear-view mirror - places
which the windscreen wipers don't clear, so useless in rain. I put mine
behind the area obscured by the passenger sun visor, right at the top of the
area cleared by the passenger wiper.

At least we haven't prohibited the use of dashcams on privacy grounds,
unlike some European countries. My feeling is that anything which happens on
the road is a "public place" and you shouldn't have any expectation of
privacy.

There is a specified area of the windscreen that must be kept clear
irrespective of an MOT. It is the same regulation that should stop you
having the fluffy dice or the air freshener swinging from your rear view
mirror on a piece of string.

Sun visors are allowed.

https://www.gov.uk/government/public...en-obscuration

My car has had a couple of MOTs with the dash cam mounted behind the
rear view mirror. It cannot be seen in the driving position.

All the ones I've seen are for left hand drive cars- although they tend not
to point that out in the sales jargon.
Why does it matter? The camera is mounted at a fixed angle to centralise the

Perhaps hidden from the driver's field of view would be more accurate.

I have the Nextbase 322GW, with the rear view camera, fixed behind the rear view mirror. The files are quite large and take a bit of time to down load to the phone and even then to see the rear view footage the file has to be downloaded to a desktop machine. I have found no way to transmit the footage on the phone to a PC other than by removing the card from the camera and putting it into a card reader.
While the camera is held magnetically to the windscreen mount I find it difficult to remove it without upsetting its orientation and it can be a bit of a faff resetting it.

All in all I am pleased with it.

My Peugeot 308 has wipers that move in opposite directions (one moves
clockwise from its horizontal rest position to its vertical end point; the
other moves anti-clockwise) which leaves a V of uncleared screen behind the
rear-view mirror. So that's the one place where I *can't* put a dashcam -
because that bit of the screen is never wiped clear of rain.

Mine (not Nextbase) is tucked up at the top of the windscreen behind the
rear view mirror. You'd only know it's there if you knew it was there.

It drops into carparking mode when the van isn't moving taking 1 picture
every second for continuous recording but if it detects a knock it
switches into video mode then back into carpark mode after a few minutes.

Makes for great CCTV but useless when the windscreen frosts over at
night.

DDPai is the brand - bought from China and now quite a few years old.

Add
to that the car's central camera/sensor console, which blocks even more
from your field of view through the windscreen, and it all makes even
less sense.

Mount it where the tax disc used to go. ;-)

Same problem: outside the area that the wipers clear, with the added problem
that the bonnet/wing partly obscures the field of view.

When connected to your desktop, does it just appear as an external

Windows app do?

You can just copy the files. Both the high and low res files are there
under /DCIM/VIDEO. They are .MOV files.

The Windows application allows playback, editing, sharing, prepare for
insurance co., etc.

Any recommendations from the NG?
