Why would landlines go up? Old tech surely? Voip is OK but the quality of
said lines is total crap these days as corporate use them a lot and the
bandwidth gets cut to the bone. Indeed some years ago my Vonage system would
not even cope with an audio tone dialer down the line to get numbers that
worked perfectly on old tech with the same telephone handset.

I personally feel we all should be demanding better telephone bandwidth as
standard these days, the quality of the telephone is no different and
sometimes far worse than the very first telephones were. We are being sold a
pup and being ripped off in my view.

Many people seem to be managing with just a mobile contract, but the
quality of mobile calls is also crap. Listen to any phone in show on the
radio if you want proof of this.

Because they can.

Old tech surely?

Yes, but when the landline was govt operation,
they weren't allowed to charge anything they liked,
particularly for the line rent and now that hardly any
govt does them anymore they can charge what they like.

In our case its now over $35 a month and calls are extra.

Plenty of mobile plans for $10/month with
unlimited calls and texts and MMSs to any
landline or mobile in the country and 1GB of data.

Voip is OK but the quality of said lines is total crap these days

Mine isnt.

as corporate use them a lot and the bandwidth gets cut to the bone.

Mine doesn’t.

Indeed some years ago my Vonage system would not even cope with an audio
tone dialer down the line to get numbers that worked perfectly on old tech
with the same telephone handset.

Then you need a better VSP.

I personally feel we all should be demanding better telephone bandwidth as
standard these days,

I don’t need to, what I get is fine.

the quality of the telephone is no different and sometimes far worse than
the very first telephones were.

That’s bull****. Don’t get anything like as
bad as the old carbon mic phones now.

We are being sold a pup

You might be, I'm not.

and being ripped off in my view.

That’s even sillier than you usually manage with
$10/month for unlimited calls, texts and MMSs
to any landline or mobile in the country and 1GB
of data. Doesn’t cost much more for that to the
10 most important countrys in the world too.

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom...n-bt-customers

"BT customers who buy only a landline telephone service will see their
monthly bills slashed by £7 per month, following an Ofcom review."

But:

"Ofcom also wants to help people who buy a telephone service from one
provider and broadband from another.

"While the price cut will not apply to this group, the agreement
requires BT to help these customers take advantage of the deals on offer
in the market, by explaining that they could get a better deal if they
purchased services as part of a bundle."

(Whatever that means.)

Interesting! That explains the unsolicited offer of "Free, up to 17Mbps
ADSL2 unlimited Broadband for 18 months, no penalty early exit" "Black
Friday" deal I received almost a week ago. I *was briefly* tempted to
take advantage of it as an emergency fallback option to my 85Mbps VM
cable service but decided it was more trouble than it was worth. I'm very
glad I tore the letter up rather than take up this particular "Freeby".

I'm looking forward to the 21 quid a quarter reduction next year. It'll
be a very welcome reduction in my telephone bill. :-)

Our last major power failure took out local mobile service almost
immediately. I tried three different phones - one on EE, one on O2, and
a US one, which should have been able to roam on whatever was available.
Nothing.
I keep an ancient corded handset in the hall cupboard for emergency use.

But the BT exchange has to support the 999 service, so it has

Why would landlines go up? Old tech surely? Voip is OK but the quality

get numbers that worked perfectly on old tech with the same telephone
handset.

"BT customers who buy only a landline telephone service will see their
monthly bills slashed by £7 per month, following an Ofcom review."

But:

"Ofcom also wants to help people who buy a telephone service from one
provider and broadband from another.

"While the price cut will not apply to this group, the agreement
requires BT to help these customers take advantage of the deals on
offer in the market, by explaining that they could get a better deal if
they purchased services as part of a bundle."

(Whatever that means.)

It's cheaper to buy your landline and internet service from the same
company.

Not by quite as much as you might think. However, I'd rather retain the
diversity of keeping broadband and POTS suppliers completely separate.

Voip is in fact ,marvellous.

But I agree about trusting the internet during even a power cut.

That why you have a mobile...

In one of my more spectacular blond moments, I rigged my UPS up to *send
me an email* when the power was off, forgetting the modem and router were
not on the UPS ...

Have you had another blonde moment & setup your newsreader to post
everything twice?

are there not some organisations left that demand a land line when you
are filling in a form on the net ? ......

Nope, and there is no way they can work out that mine is a voip anyway.

You'll be lucky of you have the choice. Our copper and fibre are both
supplied by Openreach (indirectly).

Virgin don't come out here, and 4G? Don't be daft...

The only reason we still have the copper is BT's ineptitude. They can't
arrange for the POTS port on the fibre to take incoming calls.
