Default Anyone Got A Lava Lamp?

Does anyone here have a lava lamp?
I have one ( Mathmos) and the cap to bottle and the base to bottle
appear to have been glued together at some point but the "glue" has
now hardened and failed so it's a bit unstable . You need to be able
to gain access to the bulb to change it so it can't be glued
permanently and I was wondering if anyone has encountered this sort of
problem .

The bottle doesn't fit all that well to the base but is stable enough.

Snap.

Not suitable for anywhere they can knock it over or touch.

Daughter is 12 and I detest thinks in "vulnerable" locations. They *will*
get knocked over (to prove the point) if they remain in such a place after
they have been asked to be moved.

As for hot. The "don't touch, hot" lesson was learnt the hard way, and in
IMHO the only way, on things that hurt but don't actually produce a burn
at a very young age.

Aah..so probably a previous owner ( it came via Freecycle) has thought
the same as me and considered it a bit dodgy and has glued it together
..Oh well, silicone between base and base cover it is then and that'll
still let me change the bulb if necessary . Between bottle and base

Lava lamps sometimes considered dangeous and often recommended not to
leave them on when absent or asleep!

I just use it occasionally anyway and never when I go out .Apprently
according to a Forum I visited you shouldn't have them on for more
than about 5 hours unless you are using a dimmer.

Might be worth getting high temperature silicone(*) and using the cling
film trick to get the silicone the right thickness.

(*) Not sure how hot the bottom of a lava lamp gets but it'll be a lot
hotter than normal environmental temperatures or really sure what
temperature ordinary silicone can take for extended periods of time.

Dave.

Instant gasket or similar, silicone will take fairly extreme
temperatures.

Or you could do what a friend did (not a lava lamp) and confuse
"intumescent goop-cartridge" with "intu- something to do with high
temperatures".

It remained together, but the effects after getting hot resembled PU
squirty foam run riot

Off original post, but suggest that you stock up on the appropriate tungsten
lamps when you fix it, as I don't think it will perform with a compact
fluorescent...

Saw something on teletext about that very topic today . Organisations
representing the poorly sighted saying that these replacement bulbs do
not emit enough light for such people and the Gov't has admitted there
is a problem there but that alternatives are available
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7848859.stm
Part Quote

"Sight fears over low-energy bulbs

Traditional light bulbs are being phased out in favour of
energy-efficient ones
Charities and eyesight specialists are calling on the government to
halt its plans to phase out the sale of traditional light bulbs.

Campaigners want retailers to disregard a promise to phase out the
incandescent bulbs by 2012.

They say replacement lower energy bulbs do not provide enough light,
causing problems for people with poor vision.

The government admitted there was a problem but said that alternatives
were still available"

I've got one, but it never did have any glue. The three parts: base, bottle,
cap, just sit on to of each other.

Seems like mine has had local adaptations . Clearly an object that
needs some thought as to where it should be placed.
