Lord Hall, that was a load of bollox - what do expect from the Torygraph.
Mine does 55 to 60 mpg and the emissions in town is brill. To drive they are
a dream. Everything else after is agricultural.

Very fair assessment.

What a load of bollox - they are sneering socially responsible people too.
I got a Prius because it is superb to drive, silent most of the time and
seamless in progression with no gear steps, and economical to run in fuel,
service, and no congestion charge, great longevity (topped the JD Power
surveys in the US and the UK) and big inside too. When I get into other cars
it is like a flashback in time as they are so outdated inside.

Look at the city mpg figures for the Prius. As most are driven in cities
this is where they score highly in mpg and emissions.

The Prius is light years ahead of any crap agricultural manual gbox diesel
car - light years ahead in every respect. And they are getting better as
battery technology improves and a few plug-in/petrol versions may be on the
market too. No contest, Prius wins hands down as it is, and newer models in
the next few years will push them further ahead. It seems the oil companies
may slip the Torygraph the odd wedge. Some car mags pander to the
manufacturers who advertise, and are behind in hybrid technology and
products.

The hybrids are the current benchmark that others have to equal if not
better.

Not that stupid dust to dust report. Of course if you include R&D
costs of new technology it is going to cost more. The point is that it
will eventually lower.

Accusing Prius drivers of being smug yet it's dicks like this
journalist and his ilk that seem so obsessed with the likes of Prius
drivers. Is it masturbatory material for them?

The Telegraph should stick to printing planted MI6 stories, their

Well at least they got into the thing, and drove it under some sort of

It looked fair to me...
They reported on the mpg they got while driving it the same as the other
cars.
The fact that some Prius owners get better mpg is meaningless in real terms.
I get 50+ mpg from my car and its not a hybrid and I do all my driving
around town.

If you look at the Prius it is obvious that it is designed to get the most
from the official test.. even the battery is designed to have just enough
capacity to complete the test.

Just buy a smaller car and actually save some emissions if you think you
have to help.

Forget the prius for a moment (although for sake of argument I'm
convinced lifetime energy balance is bad compared to modern diesel),
I'm more interested in the concept of a hybrid SUV. What's that all
about? They must be mad! on what planet can that be green.

Come on prius owners/drivers/idiots (I used a thesaurus - apparently
it's tautology) tell me about Toyota's green credentials on that one!

More angst than Miele v Zanussi!
or
Henry v Dyson.

Total environmental impact needs to be brought more to the fore. The article
does that - lots of nickel mined for the batteries - will 100% of it get
recycled? Noxious chemical maybe - creating pollution at point of
manufacture?

Similar arguments against wind turbines - look good - but what about the
materials used in manufacture and siting them.

Ah well - must go to the tip with my perfectly good 28inch CRT TV as I
should replace it with a LCD that might used a few less watts. That will be
good for the environment.

Not that stupid dust to dust report. Of course if you include R&D
costs of new technology it is going to cost more. The point is that it
will eventually lower.

It doesn't include research and engineering but it does include
manufacturing which is relevant /if/ you want to lower CO2.

Accusing Prius drivers of being smug yet it's dicks like this
journalist and his ilk that seem so obsessed with the likes of Prius
drivers. Is it masturbatory material for them?

Buying a car that uses more fuel is not saving CO2.
If you like the car fine.. but don't claim you (as in Prius drivers) are
helping the environment when it is obviously untrue.
The same is true for electric cars and hydrogen powered cars.. they don't
actually help to reduce CO2 only the pollution on the road.

Roll on BEV's though. And more nuclear power stations.

Prius is a total abortion really.

What's a BEV?

Battery powered.. fine (for CO2) as long as the power comes from a renewable
or nuclear source.
Then the carbon foot print is only the manufacturing, maintenance and road
building costs.
The dust to dust report didn't include anything for roads IIRC.

That is tripe. Kerbside emissions are lethal. Pollution in cities has to
be reduced drasically as more lungs are exposed. The Prius engine is off
when standing still at lights or crawling in traffic (well most of the time,
as it may come in occassionally to re-charge). Brake regen assists greatly
too.

The Prius in town traffic is a very clean car indeed.

The same is true for electric cars and hydrogen powered cars.. they don't
actually help to reduce CO2 only the pollution on the road.

They do. They reduce it where it matters - next to people an their lungs.
Once production is up and running the overall CO2 of these vehicles will
drop like a stone. Saying there is no alternative and we must keep going on
with antiquated crap like diesel engines in cars, is just downright
ignorant.

In a normal vehicle, 75% of the energy in the fuel tank is wasted.

Until and unless the electricity is non fossil generated..you CAN choose
nuclear or wind electric as a supplier..

If you look at the Prius it is obvious that it is designed to get the
most from the official test.. even the battery is designed to have just
enough capacity to complete the test.

The telling one was Autocar getting only 22 mpg over some 500 miles
including performance testing. Of course not many drive a vehicle that
hard, but even so it makes interesting comparison with other vehicles of
similar size and performance driven in the same way. All of which beat it.

Prius owners seem to quote an MPG figure based on really trying hard to
save fuel. Then use normally driven vehicles as a comparison.

Real world driving - where the two vehicles are driven the same - show the
Prius to be actually rather mediocre mpg wise - except for in heavy town
traffic. But if it *is* only meant as a town car is poorly designed for
that purpose in many other ways.

Prius owner are you?

No, I'm not.

The Telegraph should stick to printing planted MI6 stories, their
speciality.

Well at least they got into the thing, and drove it under some sort of
test conditions and compared it with an equivalent small turbodiesel,
and came up with an assessment that isn't entirely based on wishful
thinking.

Which means nothing considering their obvious biased agenda. I don't
need to get into it to know the 'dust to dust' report is skewed.

If you're not an owner have you driven one and read reliable test reports?
Magazines as far apart as Autocar and Which have criticised the
unrealistic running cost claims. Unfortunately since they're based on
official government figures it's not possible to prosecute under the
misleading advertising laws.

But if you're not an owner, why are you so keen on defending the idea?

And they are exempt from the congestion charge - despite producing far
more CO than many a small car.

The one where you use it to haul firewood out of the boggy woods?

Heh heh. The Lexus SUV hybrid can't be used off road or to tow. It's a
pure Chelsea Tractor.
