Default Curious fishy smell in bathroom...

No, honestly, I'm not making this up...

My girlfriend lives in a townhouse, and the mid-level toilet (WC and hand
basin) has started to smell. It's difficult to locate, but it smells
slightly fishy - not the sort of smell I would expect from a leaking pipe,
etc. I've tried blocking off the extractor, plugged the sink and a plumber
has removed the toilet and capped the waste pipe - but the smell remains,
and we can't seem to get rid of it.

Any ideas on what might be causing this, please.......?

Thanks

Martin

Hi,

One thing worth checking is (believe it or not) the light fitting. Old
ones can emit a horrid fishy smell when they get hot. We had that in a
house we moved into: it drove us nuts trying to work out what it was,
because it only seemed to be a problem at night. Of course, with
hindsight that was when the light was turned on. Duhh !!

Cheers, Simon

Another vote for the light fitting - have you recently changed the bulb and
perhaps put a higher wattage one in ?
Or possibly a loose wire heating a bakelite fitting (switch or light
fitting)

You can also get a urine type of smell from overheating the modern urea

.... And Vote 5. I had exactly this problem in a rented house & we
spend ages trying to suss out what it was. We thought it was something
to do with the bath as it only happened after someone had happened a
bath ... the real reason was that the light was only normally left on
for long enough when someone bathed.

My Dad suggested the light fitting - we changed it & never had the
problem again.

A curious fish?

I'd concur with the common suggestion of dying electrics. I've had a

It may not be, but it will end up that way.

Yes I know goes with the web site though. I still do not understand why the
year is ignored by their software and the same crap comes back every 12
months as if its new. many assume they just missed an episode in a long
running saga I think, at least I do not see how else the year is missed as
its on the website clear as day.

Facts, claims, pah. Forget databases and spreadsheets.

Just stand on the cliffs and look out to sea, listen to the marine band
radio and hear the small fishermen saying they are now reduced to just
swapping diesel for fish the stocks are so low, or go onto any port or
shore with smallish fishing boats and talk to the skippers. Industrial
trawlers should not be allowed inshore. I hope the two gunboats that I
understand are being built are ready in time and have enough ammunition.

It's not just the south coast, it's all around the British Isles,
wherever there was a decent small fishing industry.

To repeat what I said in another thread, the lady MP for Grimsby secured
a debate, or hearing, on wolf whistling in Westminster Hall. That will
have really impressed the ex-fishermen of Grimsby.

I don't believe that either.
sometimes you see on facebook, twitter, even here in ukdiy jpegs or gifs
with a picture of Diane Abbott or Churchill, or Jean-Claude Juncker
along with some text in quotes that they are purported to have said. the
images are known as memes, manufactured by someone to be shared and
copied round the internet.

Often if you check the right wing and brexiteer memes are fake. I don't
mean misleading statistics but simply lies, things that were never said,
like Churchill saying something about antifa or Diane abbott saying
there are too many white people in the uk. Lies.

I have never seen a blatant remainer lie of that sort. Loads of
nationalist brexiteer, anti immigrant lies.

TW

ps I am not talking about exaggeration or wrong opinions or 'facts'
which are a little short of the whole picture. This is blatant untruths.
