What keeps it from coming off its base? Maybe you could change
something in that area so you could lift it off and lay the upper
portion down in the bed. I'm sure it is heavy, but you probably
wouldn't be doing it all that often...

I wanted it to be out of the way, not taking the whole bed.

You know to change the subject a bit, I've often thought you could put
a lift-gate on your truck to good use. Like these:

http://www.jennyproducts.com/liftgates.html

http://www.truckboxdirect.com/TommyGate.aspx

Many years ago my Dad used to deliver goods for a Rental-Equipment Co.
He drove a modified 3/4 ton stake truck for many years with a small
crane that mounted between the cab-box. It was always a custom install,
job to move the crane to a new truck. So they finally gave it up and
went to a lift-gate much to my Dad's chagrin. After having to use the
lift-gate for awhile he admitted that it did work pretty well for the
majority of deliveries...

Cranes look cooler though

I replace the pivot pins on hydraulic jack cranes with grade 5 bolts
that have had the thread end shortened and pointed. The point makes
the crane easier to assemble. Once disassembled they don't take up
much space, or at least they pack in around the load.

I cross-drill the end for a hitch pin clip so the castle nut won't
vibrate off.

The least awkward procedure to break down this type
http://www.hoosiertrailer.com/f4000.jpg
is to first remove the boom pivot bolt and stand the outer end of the
boom on the ground, then disconnect the upper end of the jack and lean
it against the mast. Assembly is the reverse. This way I don't have to
both lift and align heavy parts with one hand, the jack supports much
of the boom's weight while I wiggle in the pivot pin.

I have decided that I need to do something to make loading things
easier. Last week I loaded a piece of 1/4 inch plate that was two
feet by eight feet. And barely managed to get it in the truck by
myself. Old age is hell.

I heard a saying once, that people get weak as they get older, not due
to getting older, but due to lack of exercise. I personally believe
this (and I know I should exercise more!)

That is probably correct. I do not exercise just to exercise. I do
things, but as I get older, i do not work as hard as I used to do. I
should exercise more and spend less time surfing the internet.

Figure steel weight as 40 lbs for a foot square and an inch thick, so
that was 160 Lbs of "ten pound plate".

I recently lifted and put into my truck, a 176 lbs servo motor.

I really should not have done that, but nothing seems to have
happened.

Today I disassembled my cherry picker and put the pieces in the
pickup. Drove to where the welder was located and used the cherry
picker to load the 250 AC/DC-HF welder. Then disassembled the cherry
picker and loaded it in the pickup. Drove home and reassembled the
cherry picker and unloaded the welder. It worked, but there must be
a better way. Frequent rests and lots of water helped.
