This thread was unusual in that it derived and continued without him
to a large extent and his silly questioning is an attempt to get
noticed again."

Its bull****. I do have quite a few mates of mine that
show up at my place in person to get me to help
them with all sorts of stuff, usually govt forms and
getting mobile phones unlocked and fixing their
computers, cars, houses etc etc etc. NOT ONCE have
I ever seen an ad for anything discussed and I have
3 systems listening to our conversations, goggle
/nest home mini, echo dot and siri on the iphone.

And I make and receive almost all calls on my mobile
phone and always use speakerphone mode with it
when at home too and not once has anything we
have discussed showed up in an ad either.

I do mostly buy stuff on the net, quite a bit recently
and do get ads for the sort of stuff I have just bought.
I couldn't care less and don't even bother to fart
around with ad killers on my computer or phone.

Default The Two Brain Dead Inseparable Trolling Resident Sociopaths together again

Speed, the auto-contradicting senile sociopath, blabbered, again:

FLUSH the two subnormal sociopathic cretins' endless absolutely idiotic
blather

--
TYPICAL retarded "conversation" between sociopath Rodent and sociopath
Birdbrain from August 26th 2018:

Birdbrain: "I have one head but 5 fingers."

Senile Rodent: "Obvious lie. You hairy legged cross dressers are so inbred
that you all have two heads."

Birdbrain: "You're the one that likes hairy legs remember?"

Senile Rodent: "The problem isnt the hairy legs, it's the gross inbreeding
that
produces two headed unemployables like you."

Birdbrain: "So why did you mention hairy legs?"

Senile Rodent: "Because that's what those who arent actually stupid enough
to shave their legs have."

Birdbrain: "You only have hairy legs if both of the following are true:
1) You're quite far back on the evolutionary scale.
2) You haven't learned what a razor is for."

Senile Rodent: "Only a terminal ****wit or a woman shaves their legs."

Birdbrain: "There is literally zero point in having hair all over your
body."

Senile Rodent: "There is even less point in wasting your time changing what
you are born with."

The main gripe I have with inline ads on the web is that a wonderfully blind
accessible web site churns out adverts which can completely trash all the
care and design the site builder has taken by merely putting scrolling
graphics, or test as pictures, or some kind of dodgy formatting in the page.
I thus use add blockers and any site that does not like it and wants me to
pay them can go to hell, they should be looking first and foremost the
person whatever their disability, otherwise what is the point if folk are
going to click away?
Its not a new problem, Remember all those download sites that had pop ups
saying download me first etc?
bringing back text and ftp sites I say.

Ads annoy me fully sighted, it must be many times worse for you. I can't even stand to see a single ad on a page. I can't watch or hear one single TV or radio ad without muting or fast forwarding. There are just so many of them it's become beyond a joke.

When I worked at a university, we did some studies on voice recognition. The main thing I found was more processing power makes a lot of difference. One of the systems we had, you could see it thinking about it, getting a better match as it went along. A slow processor can't keep up with a fast talker. I don't know how good a processor is in Alexas.

Its pretty good, it doesn't get it wrong very often at all.

Very interesting watching siri on an iphone when
using voice input rather than the virtual keyboard,
you can see it changing the words as it uses
context to help with which word you intend.

Surely Alexa's processing is done centrally by the Amazon server.

That's a rather silly way to do it. They'd need a huge system, and there would be problems with latency. You don't need that much CPU to process voice, it should be inside the device.

Nope.

They'd need a huge system,

But that approach allows very cheap computers in each device.

and there would be problems with latency.

In reality there isnt. The only downside is that
it doesn't work when the net isnt available.

You don't need that much CPU to process voice,

You previously said you need a lot.

it should be inside the device.

Not even possible with the answer to most questions.

There might just be a reason google isnt in the PC.

It is.

The device has beamforming in it with the microphone array to pick up
the direction of the loudest sound.

It ten uses local wakeword recognition for the Alexa keyword.

Only then does it start to stream audio to the server - starting just
_before_ the wakeword incidentally.

It's far too expensive to process audio in the servers all the time.

And BTW the mute button is hardware linked to the light. No software
hack can make it look deaf but not be deaf.

This is stupid for two reasons. Firstly it's a privacy breach. Secondly why do all that processing in one place? You don't need much power to do voice recognition with today's processors, smartphones do it ffs.

Nope, it's the only viable way to do it.

Firstly it's a privacy breach.

So is using google, making or receiving a phone
calls, driving anywhere, walking most places,
buying books, buying anything, talking to
anyone, using usenet etc etc etc. I don't care.

Secondly why do all that processing in one place?

It isnt all done in one place, its done in various places.

You don't need much power to do voice recognition
with today's processors, smartphones do it ffs.

But you do need lots of power to answer most questions
and so you might as well use that power to work out
what the person meant in context too even when
doing something simple like setting a timer etc.
