is there a noise canceling headphone, not music.
Is there a such thing as a headphone (not music) that
will quiet down an extremely noisy room when worn? Sort of like a high tech ear plug. I am looking to quiet down white noise, motor noise, television, folks talking. And yes all at the same time. I googled, but am only finding music head phones. |

Yes, most hardware stores should have them. But they are NOT called headphones, which is why your google results are bad. Try something like "hearing protectors". A lot of people use them to mow the lawn, so places that sell mowers probably have them too. |

Per T:
Is there a such thing as a headphone (not music) that will quiet down an extremely noisy room when worn? Sort of like a high tech ear plug. I am looking to quiet down white noise, motor noise, television, folks talking. And yes all at the same time. I googled, but am only finding music head phones. I would think that music head phones would do the job if they were worn with no input. People will say "Ear Plugs" or "Ear Muffs".... My experience is that neither is comfortable enough for long-term repeated use. YMMV.... But there are some quite-comfortable over-the-ear earphones... and they do not need to be noise canceling, just "Closed" (as opposed to "Open", which let in external sounds). I have a set of "Open" earphones that are so comfortable that sometimes I find myself walking around the house with them on long after I have finished using them - just because I have forgotten that I had them on. All that being said, the first thing I would try are the el-cheapo earmuffs from Harbor Freight for three bucks: http://www.harborfreight.com/industr...ffs-43768.html And if those do not work, I would move up a notch in price and try these for eight bucks: http://www.harborfreight.com/ear-muffs-94334.html Only after rejecting those, would I start looking at over-the-ear closed headphones. -- Pete Cresswell |

With no music input, they would just cancel the external noise. I've used them on airplanes when they hand them out. As soon as you put them on the airplane noise, anyone talking, etc, is greatly reduced. But they aren't cheap. Pilots also use them and there may be other brands, but that's what they are called, noise cancelling. |

These look good: http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Sho-Noise-...ds=pro+for+sho I don't think it's fair to call these noise *cancelling*. Good words would be protecting, insulating, stifling, stopping, but cancelling to me refers to electronic headphones that listen to the noise and generate an opposite signal, so that the sum of the noise and the sum of the signal is zero or close to it. I've never used them and I don't know how well they work, and I can imagine there is a wide range of what works well. But if there is no electronics in the device, I think they are being dishonest by stealing the word *cancelling* from electronic devices that seek to and afaik often succeed in cancelling noise. Less intrusive are the foam plugs. Disposable but can be reused many Foam refers to the ones you roll into a thin tube and put them in your ears before they expand. (unlike earlier foam that expanded the moment you stopped squeezing it. That was not used for ear plugs afaik.) I've used thse a lot and they work well. And they're cheap 2 dollars for 3 pair maybe, at least a few years ago. They may have disadvantages but just try them. I'm not going to prejudice you against them. I use the yellow ones that are a simple cylinder. There are also green ones that are smaller at the end. But if the foam is not good enough, I would try electronic noise *cancelling* head set, and I'd turn it on and then not turn on the sound of the radio or computer it's plugged into, or more likely it doesn't have to be plugged into anything to do its cancelling. times. I'll put them in on a stormy night when trying to sleep or run noisy equipment like the lawn mower or chain saw. At the shooting range, I'll use the plugs plus ear muffs. Muffs are better than plugs but become uncomfortable particularly when warm. |

There are some very good ones designed for the shooting sports that are adjustable to allow normal conversation FWIW I've found they lessen the sound of normal conversation just as much. And when I'd drive the car with the top down over 65mph, the wind noise was annoying, so I'd use the foam plugs, bu tthen I coudln't hear the radio. and I'd have to turn it up until it was blaring away. When I pulled up to a toll booth, I wonder what the toll taker thought of me. Plus I learned it was illegal to drive with earplugs. Now I just stay under 65 and the noise is much less. but block out louder noises and can be tuned to completely block all sounds. |

Have you ever used ANC headsets? They are the cat's meow. On the plane they get rid of almost all the backround noise, yet allow someone to talk to you with no problem.. (and that's not using them as headphones - just as noise stoppers) |

I want him listening for every little noise and every comment from the other members of his crew, radio connected or not. The ANC headphones filter out "steady state" noise but still let speach and "sound anomolies" through. What they do is listen to the backround noise and generate a "counter-wave" - sound of inverse amplitude - to cancel it out. Unpredictable sound, like speach, does not get cancelled. I'd much rather have the pilot, or be the pilot - wearing ANC headset than not because the small amplitude "sound anomolies" don't get drowned out by the backround noise. The pilot can actually hear much better with the ANC on. |

The correct term for what the OP is searching for is SNC - for Active Noise Cancelling. The non-electronic units can still be called "noise cancelling" but they are Passive - or PNC devices. A real PNC has audio engineering that traps certain frequencies while passing others. (and are nowhere near as effective and user friendly as an ANC headset) I've never used them and I don't know how well they work, and I can imagine there is a wide range of what works well. But if there is no electronics in the device, I think they are being dishonest by stealing the word *cancelling* from electronic devices that seek to and afaik often succeed in cancelling noise. Per T:
I am looking to quiet down white noise, motor noise, television, folks talking. And yes all at the same time. Also - and perhaps the best solution - you can order "Custom Molded Earplugs" for about ten bucks. Looks to me like basically a tube goop that you work into each ear and let firm up to form the "Custom-Molded" earplugs. With earphones added, that's what the professional rock musicians use to avoid going any more nerve deaf than they already are. -- Pete Cresswell |
