Walmart has a discount smoke detector for #3.97.
I know. I bought one for myself today for the hall,
and spent 10.97 and got the one with the light, for
over the bed.

The four dollar one came with a junk battery, need
alkaline 9 volt cell, sold separately.

Knowing that most people put em on the shelf and
ignore them, please offer installation with the
present. I used two drywall screws and a cordless
drill to install mine.

Exactly one year ago, my Christmas shopping was completed -
- in one stop - I gave out the gifts with the wish -
- that they would never be used !

My three kids homes, my own home, niece & nephew,
brothers, in-laws ... etc.
Volume discount at the local Fire & Safety company brought the price
down to reasonable - much cheaper than WalMart & other retailers.

I did glance at them, $25 to $35, if you wanted
plain, talking, with a light, that kind of thing.

Not sure how much longer I'll be here, so I didn't
buy the 10 year model. Of course, I could take it
along with me. Maybe next year I'll buy the ten
year unit.

Poms? I'm also curious.

As to the smoke detectors, some of the older
ones had a low sensetivity switch. Good luck
on the house and your life, I hope you never
have a fire. I'm sure other people have found
them too damn sensetive, also.

Folks who know, have suggested to
tip the unit upside down and shake it
for several seconds, once a year. Just
to keep the powder from turning into a
hard clump.

also require your efforts to change the batteries.

We replaced ours with the 10 year models as well as CO detector.

I may not be around another 10 years but this makes one less item to
worry about.

Which reminds me. I also have a CO detector. The inspectors also
installed that. I have not known how to read it, but as long as it's
silent I assume it's ok. I have never had one of them before now. so I
am clueless how to read it, and they never told me what to do or left
any instructions. I've never known if it needs batteries changed either,
althoigh I assume is does. But where they go is another question ????
Just a few weeks ago, I was trying to locate the battery compartment,
and could not find it, or at least how to open it.
It reads "ON" on the LCD screen, and beeps when I press "Test". Another
button says PPM CO, and when I press it, it says "0" (zero). Obviously
it's working.

kills more people than flames - you want to know there is trouble

Yes. I've seen AC powered (plug into wall socket) smoke detectors.
The horn will blow you right outta yer bed. Sears usta sell 'em. Not
a battery to be found.
