Default Any Techs left here?

I am close to closing my door to this group. Why? It seems that in the
last several months it has been infested with garbage (big tits, nike
shoes, etc.). Looking at things now, I have to assume there is no hope
in recovery, or something would have been done by now. Maybe nothing
can be done. Can't a filter be applied to anyone wanting to post
something here? A filter that looks for key words in the subject or
message that can reject non electronic repair stuff? This can't be
difficult or impossible. Maybe make it more difficult to subscribe -
24 hour waiting period to confirm user (email address and phone number
- yes be contacted). I wouldn't mind this if my motive was for the
right reason. Relpies welcome.

If it bothers you then why not subscribe to a techs only forum or listserve.
There are many that are not plagued by the spam, though they are often
plagued by chatty techs who can't keep focused on fixing things.

All the same people are still here, ignoring all the spam, as you should.
It'll calm down again I expect, like it usually does ...

Legitimate requests for help are still being answered, as they always have
been, or are you somehow missing that ? This is not a moderated internet
forum. It is a Usenet newsgroup. No one has to 'subscribe' to it in that
way. This is just a word that your newsgroup reader client uses to indicate
that it is on your 'favorites' list of groups, with a direct shortcut. The
spam is produced by bots, not people, and there's not a lot that can be done
to circumvent it really.

This is the usenet, you have to do the filtering on your end. I agree the
spam is irritating, but it's pretty easy to identify it at a glance and
ignore it, or set up a filter in your newsreader. I normally sort by name
and read the posts by people I recognize first, then scroll through the
other posts to see if anything catches my eye that I happen to be
knowledgeable about, the junk just gets ignored.

No more than any other group. And there's not really that much of it either.

I think you have a fundamental misconception of newsgroups. This is USENET,
_NOT_ GOOGLE! Google has _NOTHING_ to do with usenet other than to provide
a vehicle for archival retrieval of previous posts.

Duh.

Google has _NOTHING_ to do with usenet

Clueless. Since they bought the archive from Deja,
Google is the big problem with Usenet .

other than to provide a vehicle for archival retrieval of previous posts.
Dave S.

Yup. Clueless. *Anyone* with a legit email address
(even a throw-away account) can sign up for a Google account.
In fact, you can use THAT SAME ADDRESS
to sign up for A BAZILLION Google accounts.
Once you have an account, you can ***POST*** to Usenet
thru their "Google Groups" Web-based Usenet interface (portal).

As I stated (and you snipped):
::If you exclude Google, the providers have [Usenet spam] under
control
::--no different than historic levels.
::
By my count, 98% of the spam is coming from Google Groups.
Google, when (and IF) they do cancel accounts,
only cancel a SINGLE account
--NOT **all** of the acounts made using the same email address.
It's like ****ing in the sea.

If Google Groups had a pit bull running their anti-spam effort
--instead of a toothless teacup poodle,
Usenet spam levels would plummet.

....and, as I previously noted,
Google's business model is based on **classifying data**.
It's not like they couldn't do the proper filtering
using RBLs and direct reports
--but their PROFIT MOTIVE is distorting their ethics.
That's what happens when you let a whore run the operation.

and start invoking filters to screen out what you don't want to see.

Get a real news server that filters out most of the crap. Google
groups is crap. What do you expect from a 'free' service'?

I am still getting the electronic related stuff, but only having been
visiting this site for a year or two, I have never seen this much
"spam". It's like a flood gate that started leaking and busted wide
open. I don't respond to the "spam" by the way. Thanks for responding.

I am looking, but I really enjoy the advice, support, and knowledge of

I will look into the filtering. If it's that simple I shouldn't have
any problem and this sounds like a reasonable thing to do. Thanks for
responding.

Try "X-News". It has good filtering capabilities.

Dave Spear, in this thread, was under the assumption
that I didn't know what Usenet is.
Here is what we are up against
with regard to Google Groups and Usenet:
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache...Web_interfaces

I will research "news readers" and see what happens.

Here's a once-over-lightly.
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache...Cross-platform

A lot of folks who run Windoze like Forte Agent (payware).
Gravity (free, open source) also has a lot of fans.

It appears you are using an older version of Mozilla Suite.
To get maximum usability out of the suite
(including the updates WRT reading groups),
you could upgrade to SeaMonkey and continue using familiar software.
..
..
You will also need a provider. Many ISPs' Usenet access sucks.
Here's a recent thread on some Usenet providers that don't suck:
