*Nice to hear that the stimulus package is already trickling down to benefit
the unemployed. Watching TV should keep everyone's mind off of the economy.

I'd rather use work to distract myself, besides I'll need the income to pay
for my neighbors' homes, cars, TV's, cellphones, healthcare, dinner and
entertainment. That's just the bills congress passed this week, who knows
what I'll have to pay for next week.

Me too, living within my means and saving for retirement really worked
out. I am really glad I can help out people who bought a house they
couldn't afford or maybe speculated in real estate and lost or even
those poor folks who greedily scammed the system with their banks or
brokerages and need our money to pay their $50 Million bonuses for the
great work they did.

The blue team is really doing a good job showing us how stupid we were.
The best comment I heard was from Dennis Miller. He mentioned that many
of us donate to various overseas charities where we get letters from
individuals telling us how they were able to go to school or make
advances in their life and they also included a picture. So Miller asked
since Obama and the rest of the blue team want half of the country to
pay for the other half will we get a picture of who we are supporting?

Here is one picture of the first lady serving "the homeless" in DC. I'm sure
cellphones are essential equipment for the "homeless" of today. Tough enough
for me sweating out how I'm going to send my three "high honor roll" kids to
college, now that their college savings are wiped out, but I've got to worry
about keeping the growing number of non productive members of society, in
cellphones

Of course, if you lost your home, it is difficult to have a landline. To
some people it may look like extravagance, but in order to communicate -
perhaps with a prospective employer, police, or even family - a cellphone
might be the economical answer. All this pointed out by my wonderful
spouse.

Btw, I'm glad we have finished putting the kids through college, because
on my current salary it would be difficult. And, oh yeah, I am of the
opinion that parents should educate their children. That includes
financial wisdom, showing that it takes effort to make a living, and that
it may be difficult for a person to find his/her "right" career.

Your wife and you, are absolutely correct, and that is where I most have a
problem with this current situation, and this particular story. Michelle
Obama should be teaching these "homeless" folks, to cook and serve
themselves. With her Princeton education, she should be teaching them how to
dig themselves out of their financial problems, but instead, she's telling
productive people to give their time to doing this work, and stealing food
from the Whitehouse

You'll notice Mrs. Obama didn't invite the homless to a home-cooked dinner
at the White House*. Instead she helped serve gruel, gristle, chicken feet,
and vegetable by-products at their house.

Actually, if you saw some of the other folks in this free food kitchen,
they're all better dressed than I am. I was kinda wondering if they're not
federal office workers just eating on the cheap. Regarding the cell phone,
apparently there are several government programs that give free cell phones
to certain people who qualify for food stamps. From what I've read, you
don't have to be particularly "poor" to get food stamps these days

I haven't followed this thread, but there are lots of charitable groups
that take donated cell phones .. give to elderly, abuse victims, and
have only "911" capability.

I've seen articles about rich folks dining at soup kitchens...well
dressed and buying groceries until they hit the limit on plastic and no
more re-fi. Gotta keep some cash for important stuff like gas, booze
and ciggies.

have you seen the SafeLink ads on TV?
a prepaid by TracFone, for low income folks.

BTW,you can recharge at cafes or some restaurants, probably even McD's;just
sit near a wall outlet. Or,if you're living out of your car,get a car
charger...

I think you may have hit the silver lining of this cloud. With changes in
drug laws, and the government giving everything away, to the "poor", there
is no reason for crime. Obama will do all the stealing for you, and it'll be
legal

Ya know, all this stuff is going to be an asset to at least a portion
of the electronics industry. Think of the new need for different
calculators this has created. Their screen needs to have enough
digits presented to be able to deal with billions instead of mere
millions. But those won't be having much of a market in the Capitol
area.
It is interesting, though, that the "first class" mail distinction
was
made. After all, can't do it as "standard mail" because it could take
"several weeks" to get to its destinations. Maybe it would have been
better to have all those 'po folks' give their email addresses, and
the
coupon could have been printed at their home.
Acknowledging that there are indeed some that don't have satellite
service or cable, and no email either. But it would be almost a
dollar
saved in postage for every two that could be sent the coupon in email
fashion.
Ahh, but the USPS needs some of that money to help encourage its
own dysfunctions. But to give it credit, it's not been my impression
that "standard mail" should be expected to take "several weeks". Am
I wrong on that?

knows what I'll have to pay for next week.

Me too, living within my means and saving for retirement really worked
out. I am really glad I can help out people who bought a house they
couldn't afford or maybe speculated in real estate and lost or even those
poor folks who greedily scammed the system with their banks or brokerages
and need our money to pay their $50 Million bonuses for the great work
they did.

The blue team is really doing a good job showing us how stupid we were.
The best comment I heard was from Dennis Miller. He mentioned that many of
us donate to various overseas charities where we get letters from
individuals telling us how they were able to go to school or make advances
in their life and they also included a picture. So Miller asked since
Obama and the rest of the blue team want half of the country to pay for
the other half will we get a picture of who we are supporting?

Here is one picture of the first lady serving "the homeless" in DC. I'm sure
cellphones are essential equipment for the "homeless" of today. Tough enough
for me sweating out how I'm going to send my three "high honor roll" kids to
college, now that their college savings are wiped out, but I've got to worry
about keeping the growing number of non productive members of society, in
cellphones

Reminds me of picture I saw projecting what Michelle Obama will look
like at the end of Obama's term:

What would you call it?
Reduce taxes (for the rich).

Start a war or two which even if justifiable somehow were mismanaged for
the first 5 years. Oh yeah, wars cost money, kill people (mostly not the
rich), and war profits go to those with the chutzpah to charge the
government (mostly the corporations and executives with an "in"). Did I
mention thaat wars have a tendency to resul in bad things like injuries,
physical and mental? Theater medicine has now improved so much that many
injuries which formerly were deadly now bring home the maimed.
Hospitals, like VA hospitals will have to care for those people for the
next 60 or so years!!! Does cost money, now and in the future.

Deregulation has pushed people to push the envelop of greed and
legalistics. Just in case you forgot, we are now spending 100's of
trillions of dollars to bail out "systems" that "cannot be allowed to
fail". That is not because the capitalist system works so well when not
regulated. Please note sarcasm. I am not in favor of communism or
strict socialism, but of capitalism with responsibility and regulation.
Stealing is still stealing, and inducing people to get mortgages that
rely on their home's values to increase at 20% a year is not responsible.

All these things might have happened under other presidents than the last
Bush, but he was in charge and is responsible. Of course those idiot
congress critters running for reelection share some responsibility, but
it was Bush and his cronies that pushed the envelop.

Thanks for letting me rant.

I think you should cry, not giggle, and prepare for the megainflation to
come.

The biggest reductions were in the area of the low income earners

also cut. Taxes paid by the higher groups went up in all categories
(percentage of total taxes paid, percentage of taxes paid versus
percentage of taxpayers, even % of AGI, according to IRS figures.

Of course neither is buying into it. The greed on the part of the

The trigger for your rant was government debt, but since you brought up

DEAD AND WOUNDED
Our dead and wounded were volunteers. They signed up knowing the risk of
being maimed but viewed that as acceptable for the opportunity to kill
people and blow things up. In that, there is no difference between them and
mountain climbing, sky diving, auto racing, or being married to my ex-wife.
Our troops were trained for war, they wanted to go to war, they NEEDED to go
to war!

The experience gained by our warrior class has not only sharpened the
spear's tip, but polished the shaft. You'd be hard pressed to find ANY
commander today, from sergeant to general, who has not led troops in combat.
Latest figures show that 85% of troops who've served in Afghanistan or Iraq
re-enlist. The remaining 15% retire, are invalided out, or are married to
harridans. They do what they were trained to do, they do what they need to
do, they do what they were BORN to do.

Several years ago, in an area not too far from where our soldiers are
currently deployed, a military leader said:

"Just there the barbarians huddle, sheer terror gripping tight their hearts
with icy fingers... knowing full well what merciless horrors they suffered
at the swords and spears of three hundred. Yet they stare now across the
plain at TEN THOUSAND Spartans commanding thirty thousand free Greeks!

"The enemy outnumber us a paltry three to one, good odds for any Greek. This
day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future
brighter than anything we can imagine. "

COST
President Bush inherited a modest recession. In spite of that, 9-11,
Katrina, and two wars, we had twenty-five consecutive quarters of economic
growth. The Dow-Jones doubled to over 13,000, unemployment dipped to a low
of 4.5%. Then the Democrats took over Congress, and, in less than a year,
managed to **** things up mightily. With a new president, we're currently at
10.8% unemployment, running up more debt than all previous administrations
combined, the Dow-Jones is at its lowest in 12 years, the S&P is down 45%
from its high, and, to continue the "****ed-up" metaphor, we are suffering
from double-penetration!

REGULATION
If you're talking about the banking industry, forget it. The banking sector
is the second-most regulated industry in the country (I submit guns are more
regulated). The one thing that started this snowball rolling downhill was
the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 under Carter, but perverted by
Clinton. In 1995, banks were REQUIRED to have a significant portion of their
loan portfolio in disadvantaged communities. [I've seen bank branches
(Washington Mutual, Chase, etc.) in neighborhoods that the only other retail
establishments on the block were drug dealers and hookers.] The only way for
a bank to do so was to virtually eliminate prudent lending criteria such as
having a job! That was a minor inconvenience for the banks inasmuch as they
could bundle these notes and sell them to Fannie or Freddie.

People could buy a $300,000 house for $500/month with a balloon payment in
five years. When the five-year threshold came, the house was worth $500,000
and they could simply re-finance. This Ponzi scheme collapsed when virtually
everybody who could take two consecutive breaths had a home and there was no
one left that wanted a loan.

The point is, capitalism isn't responsible - point a finger at government
interference in the markets.

BUSH RESPONSIBLE
Bush was in charge, true. From 2003 onward, on four separate occasions,
bills were introduced to reign in Freddie and Fannie. None made it to the
President's desk.

I appreciate your rant and the opportunity to offer a different rendition of
the facts.

In California if you can't afford insurance they revoke your car

you can find some private property to park it on. So they pretty much
eliminated homeless people living in their cars. They also eliminated the
ability to look for a job in many cases.

they have to FIND it before they can tow it.

Not hard to do. New Haven CT just got a new scanner so they just drive up
the street and the computer photographs, compares tags to a database and
kicks out the expired regs. They've taken in a million bucks in previously
unpaid taxes so far. The equipment cost about $100,000 so not a bad
return. Watch an episode of Parking Wars on A&E to see how it works. Philly
uses it for parking ticket warrants.

The bill that BUSH ran up?
What would you call it?
Reduce taxes (for the rich).
Start a war or two which even if justifiable somehow were mismanaged
for the first 5 years. Oh yeah, wars cost money, kill people (mostly
not the rich), and war profits go to those with the chutzpah to
charge the government (mostly the corporations and executives with an
"in"). Did I mention thaat wars have a tendency to resul in bad
things like injuries, physical and mental? Theater medicine has now
improved so much that many injuries which formerly were deadly now
bring home the maimed. Hospitals, like VA hospitals will have to care
for those people for the next 60 or so years!!! Does cost money, now
and in the future.
Deregulation has pushed people to push the envelop of greed and
legalistics. Just in case you forgot, we are now spending 100's of
trillions of dollars to bail out "systems" that "cannot be allowed to
fail". That is not because the capitalist system works so well when
not regulated. Please note sarcasm. I am not in favor of communism
or strict socialism, but of capitalism with responsibility and
regulation. Stealing is still stealing, and inducing people to get
mortgages that rely on their home's values to increase at 20% a year
is not responsible.
All these things might have happened under other presidents than the
last Bush, but he was in charge and is responsible. Of course those
idiot congress critters running for reelection share some
responsibility, but it was Bush and his cronies that pushed the
envelop.
Thanks for letting me rant.

I appreciate your rant and the opportunity to offer a different rendition of
the facts.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste...even for a winger.

Bush is responsible for all the problems we now face...and the bills
that will need to be paid.

On the news tonight they were talking about how the entire world is in a
depression. Did Bush set economic policy for Europe and Asia too?
