Yesterday I bought some teak from a local seller in Houston. He happened to
have a couple of pieces of cocobolo and I bought one. I'm mesmerized by this
stuff because its so beautiful and HEAVY. I hefted it in the rear of the
van and drove home. Along the way, I had to make a sudden stop due to a
tie-up in the freeway. WHAM! That piece of wood launched and slid all the
way from the rear door and slammed into the right front passenger seat. It
scared the pee-turkey out of me as it darned near took out the front seat.
Next time I buy cocobolo, its going to have its own seatbelt!

What part of Houston did you have to go to? I hate having to drive
into town for anything if I can avoid it. :-) I'm in Friendswood.
Took SWMBO to Bush Airport last Monday - an hour there and an hour
back. :-( (And that was with light 5:00am traffic)

Unlikely I'll go to TX for the lumber, but I am interested in the disparity
in prices from place to place. Around here (Connecticut) most places I've
found have it in the $15/bf range.

Similar experience. I bought a new BMW X5 - my "truck". I was hauling some
1x home and had a few pieces stacked up on the center console to get more
length inside and minimize what was hanging out the tailgate. Hit the
brakes hard and that top piece of 1x came flying forward, slammed into the
dash and removed the face plate of the dashboard CD player. It rendered the
CD player inoperable. Took it to the dealer for repairs and all they could
say was "how in the hell did this happen?". Remember, your typical Bimmer
owner doesn't haul stuff home from the borg. Don't ask what a new CD player
cost.

This is why I'm having trouble picking out a nicer car than my Taurus.
So far I haven't found one with a folding backseat to let me slip some
planks in through the trunk and have maybe only 2 or so feet sticking
out the back, if any.

I had a Taurus company car. Man the boss would have hit the roof had he
seen me one of the many times hauling 8 ft lumber home in it.

When I buy heavy, pointy materials (lumber, rebar, metal stock, etc.) and I
put it in my pickup, I make sure the forward ends are on the passenger side
of the truck. That way, if I run into ..., uh, if *someone else* runs into
me head-on, I won't get impaled. Saw a movie once where that happened and
the image has stuck with me.

Saw a car wreck where that happened - that is an image that will
*really* stick with you. Too often we forget that the things we are
carrying in our trucks, cars, vans or whatever can become instant
battering rams or spears in the event of an accident. I even read of
one roll-over where a baby in a car seat received serious head
injuries from a flying cell-phone. Gives me pause for thought when I
consider the 80+ pound tool-box in the back of my van at times. It is
not just for aesthetics that UPS puts that grille-work behind the
driver!

I know two brothers who rolled their pickup coming back home after

For serious wood hauling, you need a 8 foot bed. The Supercrew is only
5.5 feet. You'll need to upgrade to a F-250 if you want an 8 foot bed and
a crew cab.

With an 8 foot bed, you can put plywood in and close the tailgate. I have
seen someone with a Dodge Dakota lose a whole load of plywood out the back
end.

Jeez, I've hauled stuff with my daughter's Ranger and my F-150
without any problems in either truck. The Op was hauling in a
compact car. I figure ANY truck is better than that. If you want
to stay in the same price range you rule out F-250s real fast. 8
ft beds are nice but hardly necessary, don't get me started about

No, the OP (me) was hauling in a mini-van. It will hold 4x8 sheet stock with
doors closed, if you load it at the correct angle. I'd never, ever submit
it to the equal of any truck. Its a mom-mobile. But its paid for and
hardly costs anything to keep going. I will cry the day that it dies and I
have to replace it with new car payments for anything.
