Powermatic 3520 stuff for trade....
Hi folks....
I've got a powermatic 3520, and I just discovered that the 3520A bed extensions don't fit onthe 3520. The castings onthe 3520A are a tad thicker - just enough so that the tailstock can't be adjusted to work on both at the same time...... so here's the deal. I'd *really* like to get a long bed extension, so if you have a 3520A (and don't ever expect to need a bed extension), I'd love to swap my bed for your bed. I'll even throw in a spare banjo and tool rest...... Alternatively, if you happen to have a 3520, and expect to want a bed extension some day, I would be glad to swap a new 3520A long bed extension for your 3520 bed (the extension and the original bed are the same thing). I'm located in southern NH, so if you're anywhere near here, and have any interest, I'd love to hear from you.... OK, now here's the bitching part... when the 3520 first came out, it had a lot of "new tool" probelms, mostly with the headstock. they were bad enough that I actually waited until the 3520A came out, waited for the new production backorders to clear out, and got one. Of course, I didn't bother to check the serial number. Well, I just discovered that the vendor never changed their stock number, so theres no way they can tell if it was a 3520A or a 3520 they delivered to me (even though they *sold* me a 3520A), but thats actually kind of irrelvent because they apparently have no record of my ever having bought it there...... After calling them up, pretty much the resonse I got was "yeah, that makes sense, I can see how that would have happened. Man that really sucks. Maybe if you call back tomorow and talk to the manger, he can help you." Guess whos getting a call tomorow. In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can find my original purchase paperwork, and see if its detailed enough to have the model number on it (a lot of thier reciepts just read things like "powermatic lathe, dewalt sander, etc.". OK, I'll finish my rant tomorow, after I talk to the manager Either they'll be getting a nice positive customer service type posting, or a major flamage regarding their inventory control and special order handling...... Feh. thanks -_JD |

JD,
I have one of the earlier 3520 lathes (maybe 5 years ago). One of the changes is the pressure plate on the headstock. The older version had a cast iron plate. I snapped mine while having a bad time coring some black locust (catches with the tool a bit below center). They sent me a new plate after I complained. While waiting, a neighbor of mine made me one which is still in place. I checked the new plate, and it will fit, but the bolt it mounts on isn't long enough. Maybe I will fix it some day, but the one that my neighbor made works fine. robo hippy |

yep. it does. Mine only sys 3520.
The question isn't if I have a 3520 or a 3520A (the vendor screwed me on that), the question is is there an easy way to make the new bed extension fit the old lathe. Answer seems to be that it would be as expensive to modify one or theother as it would beto just replace the whole thing (the old one). I was hoping to find someone local that had a 3520 or 3520A, and knew that they would never need a bed extension, then do a swap. All of the parts work on either bed, but the 2 beds are different thicknesses, so you can't mix them.... -_JD On my 3520A the model number on the serial number plate DOES state "3520A" so you should be able to verify what is is that you actually have.
