You can learn to do it yourself - they do wheelwrighting courses
at Gayle Mill in Yorkshire www.gaylemill.org.uk

I did one last year - a fabulous experience.

I watched it too, along with another 4 or 5 videos culminating in a 24
minute episode called "Temporary Governor" starring Ronald Reagan which I
started skipping through after the first ten minutes before finally
discovering its connection to the classic 20 mule borax wagon train as
the background scene in the end credits!

As per usual, I'd spent a (mere in this case) whole two hours of
following You Tube's breadcrumb trail before finally realising that I'd
been suckered yet again into watching more You Tube footage than was
strictly necessary.

Gah! It happens *every* time. Will I ever learn? Actually, I did learn
something - all about the role of the 20 mule Borax wagon trains in the
extraction of Borax from Death Valley up until the advent of motorised
transport in the 1930s. Unfortunately, I doubt such knowledge is ever
likely to be of any use in everyday small talk. :-(

True, but it was interesting. Fascinating. Did you watch the one about
his cat, Smoke?

It is amazing.

A friend jacked in his city banking job and learnt 'heritage' wood
working. That was about 7 years ago - he now has a very successful
business restoring the wood bits of English Heritage properties and
stately homes. Winning combo of hand craft skills, a genuine interest,
and a posh voice :-)

As above:-)

You should all read *The Wheelwright's Shop* by George Sturt.

He describes in detail the making of a cart wheel. Similar procedure to
the film but the wheel *dished* rather than flat as the borax one. The
axles were inclined such that the wheel rim would *take the ruts* while
the top would allow a wider wagon body.

Ah, so the opposite of those boy racers who have such a huge amount of
negative camber on their rear wheels, you have to assume they scrub
through a set of tyres every fortnight ...

Nope. By the time I got to seeing the end credits of that "Western" with
Ronald Reagan, I'd had more than enough You Tubery to last me for that
evening. :-(

As interesting/fascinating as these videos are, there does eventually
come a point where even I've had 'more than enough' (with me 'enough'
isn't enough, only 'more than enough' is enough).
