Default Security Grilles

Hi All,

I am looking for window security grilles (ideally, some sort of wire mesh
system that can be easily removed during the day) for a window I have that
is 5' x 5'.

I have looked at having roller shutters fitted but this is too much money,
so any suggestions gratefully received. I have had a look around but
everything I seem to find is very decorative, I just want a basic system.

Cheers

Mark

I have fitted 1 ins sq, welded, galvanised wire, about 16SWG over the
outside of some windows. Fixed with posidrive 10SWG screws into plastic
plugs at about 12 ins centres all round. When fitted put a drill into
the crosshead so that they can not be removed without drilling them out
completely. Does not look nice, but it works.

Just an idea...

Channel iron top and bottom, and galv mesh in a welded frame.

Slide it into place, and you can put something simple like a padlock
through the channel iron to prevent it from being removed.

If you don`t have enough access to allow it to slide out, channel iron
to the top, and angle iron to the bottom as a surface it can sit on, and
padlock it in place in a similar way.

Get down to a builders merchant and get some mesh for concrete
reinforcement, the bars are usually about 8mm, although they do come in
different diameters....the 'holes' range from 100mm up to about 250mm.
You'd have to have a channel for it to sit in at the bottom and padlocks on
each side and top to prevent it being removed.
You'll probably have to give it a couple of coats of paint to prevent it
rusting (any further!)
Is it going inside or outside the house?

Welded steel mesh 10swg (3mm dia) wire in 2" (50mm) squares is the usual
stuff for making security cages. You can buy that from Mirlyn Ltd in Hove
East Sussex 01273 733404, then you only need to weld it to a frame that you
can padlock into place when you need it.

Weldmesh fencing is a possibility, comes in galvanised or green pvc
coated, or for higher security the steel mesh stuff they use for
freestanding security/site fencing - basically see what a larger
fencing specialist can do.

You don't say if it's for domestic or business, or if there's room for
the grille to hinge or slide away or needs to be a "lift-off and
store", or if you're looking at this as a daily cycle.

Does it matter if the closed grille is opaque, or do people still need
to see in or out?

Is the purpose to protect the glass against thrown objects or to stop a
reasonably determined entry?

Fencing based grilles will do the former, but can be removed with
boltcutters in a few minutes.

An alternative may be laminated/plate/wired glass (less expensive than
you may expect) or even old-fashioned wooden shutters.

I removed some PVC coated stuff which had fallen to bits, when galvanised,
installed at the same time, was still going strong. Go for *galvanised*.

Better yet, go for plain and then get it galvanised /after/ you finished
welding it.
