Besides, what is described is not even "spying". Spying would be more
along of what the Bush administration did, that is, obtaining a secret tap
to Internet network traffic. What is described here is a simple lookup of
information that was intended to be public. It is analogous to googling my
own name to see who mentioned me.

Those who believe that looking at public blogs is "spying", live in a
fantasy world.

You can rest assured that comments besides Obamania will be targeted and
your info will be recorded, so that the Commisar can compile an enemies
list.

I just don't like the idea of Big Brother peering over my shoulder - it's
anathema to Liberty.

Get ahold of a copy of George Orwell's "1984", and see how accurate it is
today.

Then you should stay the **** off the internet. Certainly off usenet
and any other public forums. This **** is archived all over the place,
and that's not only by the government - google [ " Whitehouse spying

I wouldn't write anything in these places that I wouldn't want a
prospective employer, an IRS agent, a cop or my wife to see.

It sounds more like he's trying to keep himself employed, out of trouble
with the IRS and the law, and married. d8-)

Have you ever been dragged into court over something you've said on a
newsgroup? I have. I was hauled in as a witness in a half-million-dollar
lawsuit four years ago (I wasn't being sued; my former employer was), and
two messages I posted here about eight years ago became pivotal in the suit.
I sweated it, and I was *really* glad that I'm not a bull****ter, like some
of the folks here. Truth became the issue, and what I had said was truthful.
(The case was thrown out after four days of testimony, FWIW).

But truthfulness sometimes isn't enough -- especially when the truth isn't
pretty.

In cases like that, the first thing lawyers do today is to sit their
paralegals down in front of computers and send them to Google with a list of
all of the variations of your name and aliases -- your nyms, etc. I had
really made it simple for them in that regard. g

15 years ago, a certain USENET kook sent numerous faxes to my
employer, demanding that I be fired immediately because "I defamed
him and his patents".

I was not fired for a very simple reason, my employer needed me to
maintain and enhance the software that I wrote. I did not like it, but
did not sweat it too much because I was not married, my only fixed
expense was apartment rental, and I was sure that I could find another
job.

In my case I didn't sweat it because the company being sued was all but out
of business, and I had left a couple of years earlier. But it could have
been ugly if I had played loose with the facts.

These entire NG and blog businesses are cornucopias for people who want to
make trouble.

There is nothing about me or my opinions that I don't want to be known,
preferably by as many people as possible.

Hope This Helps!

Can I please have your credit card numbers, SSN and home address? Your
mother's maiden name would be helpful too. I'd also like to know the names
of all your banks and their account numbrs please.

...Kidding of course.

Have a great weekend folks. This week marks the end of the first week I've
ever been successfully dragged into an off-topic post here. I hope to make
a clean break next week but this whole InterNet / privacy issue stuff is
what really gets me going...

What difference would it make? My current bank balance is $0.50, I haven't
paid into Social Security in about 20 years, I don't have any credit cards,
and what would you do with my Mother's maiden name anyway?

Take my identity - Please!

When did I say that? All I said is that, unlike Vegas, what is said on
usenet is pretty much public information. I don't think I'm giving up
my rights to free speech every time I DON'T climb up a tower with a
bullhorn and let everyone for miles around know what's on my mind.
Likewise, I don't think I'm giving up any rights at all by minding my
words in this public forum.

I know I have the "right" to say whatever I want in public. That does
NOT mean that I HAVE to say everything in public.

A real problem I've noticed with Libertarians and second amendment
types is that there seems to be this feeling that if you are not
constantly "exercising" your rights, that you are giving them up,
which will somehow lead to losing them permanently. Look, you have a
right to privacy. Do you feel violated every time you go out in
public? If not, how is that any different from choosing not to always
speak your mind in public or not to always carry a gun?

BTW, the two links I cited yesterday that lead back to this discussion
are NOT from government agencies. They are from a commercial search
engine that you probably use every day. If they were not indexing all
this stuff, it would be harder to find things on the internet. I AM a
bit wary of Google, but that doesn't make me hide from them, either.
What does **** me off about Google is their ongoing attempt to
undermine copyright law (google "orphan works act") In that respect,
they have shown quite clearly that, in addition to their stated goal
of "organizing the world's information," they also want to *OWN* that
information.

I think the sadness here is that you so completely misread what I
wrote.
