Chlorine fumes force evaucation, school lockdowns in West Valley

Tamara Bevan of Phoenix covers her nose and mouth to shield herself from any
lingering chlorine gas. Bevan was riding a city bus to work when the chlorine
leak shut down parts of 51st Avenue, forcing her to find alternate
transportation.

A chlorine leak at an industry plant has forced the evacuation of parts of
southwest Phoenix and Glendale, and prompted eight schools in the area to keep
students inside classrooms until further notice.

The leak sent sharp, noxious fumes into the air. It is believed to have
occurred at a one-ton holding tank of a business near 49th and Pasadena
avenues, just north of Camelback Road. Firefighters estimate a one-ton tank
holds up to 7,000 gallons of liquid.

Early reports of a chlorine leak from a railroad tanker car proved false.

The call, which came in shortly after 11:30 a.m., led firefighters to call for
the evacuation of a largely industrial area bounded by 39th and 51st avenues
and by Camelback and Missouri Avenue.

No injuries have been reported, but at least one area hospital has put its
staff on alert. Hazardous material units from Tempe, Phoenix and Glendale fire
departments are working the scene and they could be there as late as midnight,
said Glendale Fire Division Chief Capt. Elio Pompa.

Pompa said a greenish-orange cloud formed as the chlorine, which is in liquid
form, vaporized.

Authorities did not identify the eight schools.

Let's see.

In W.W.I - the 'big one' - the great scientific thought was this for the
men
in the trenches:

**** in a pot. Keep pot close by. If chlorine is detected, take socks,
your
only dry pair that is, soak and then press over nose and mouth.

Yea right!

It formed Ammonium chloride - not so bad.
Such was life.

Actually the French had a "gas mask" that was basically a big sock for your
head that had eye holes. It was then dipped in said **** pot and put on.
Looked kind of like a duck bill, and gave rise to the term "smelly duck".
Maybe having your lungs burned out isn't so bad after all.

They have had a couple here in the valley and said nothing for a long
time (over 5-10 hours) , don't want to concern people. When Pepcon
went up and burned for a week , they said there was no hazard
breathing rocket fuel . I happened to be right next to that one. Just
an amazing red and black mushroom cloud. I was next to another blast
in S.A. TX. in an '86 train derailment.

I used to be a consulting Engineer in integrating computers into
Industrial sites.

Spent several days in a 10 mile x 10 mile chlorine and caustic soda
plant in La.
The chlorine would leak from time to time and we had to plot the cloud
as it
moved through the site so gas masks could be put on or people moved.

It also etched the cars. Add a little moisture and you have HCL acid.

We got that installed and the turbine bearing sensors on the power
plants (2 each).

This was in the late 70's and the color monitors (yea there were a
couple) were
graphic enough as they were slated for CAD - we were able to draw the
plant,
roads, fire house, police, and everyone else roads - then show the cloud
in yellow
as it moved and masked a building or parking lot... That was kinda
fun.
Dow Chemical U.S.A. was the place. Took the Chlorine from the
Mississippi river
and when it was low in the summer, took it from salt domes which they
had many.
