Chlorine leak In Phoenix
Got Mask?
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...neleak-ON.html Chlorine fumes force evaucation, school lockdowns in West Valley Tamara Bevan of Phoenix covers her nose and mouth to shield herself from any lingering chlorine gas. Bevan was riding a city bus to work when the chlorine leak shut down parts of 51st Avenue, forcing her to find alternate transportation. Brent Whiting The Arizona Republic Nov. 17, 2003 01:55 PM A chlorine leak at an industry plant has forced the evacuation of parts of southwest Phoenix and Glendale, and prompted eight schools in the area to keep students inside classrooms until further notice. The leak sent sharp, noxious fumes into the air. It is believed to have occurred at a one-ton holding tank of a business near 49th and Pasadena avenues, just north of Camelback Road. Firefighters estimate a one-ton tank holds up to 7,000 gallons of liquid. Early reports of a chlorine leak from a railroad tanker car proved false. The call, which came in shortly after 11:30 a.m., led firefighters to call for the evacuation of a largely industrial area bounded by 39th and 51st avenues and by Camelback and Missouri Avenue. No injuries have been reported, but at least one area hospital has put its staff on alert. Hazardous material units from Tempe, Phoenix and Glendale fire departments are working the scene and they could be there as late as midnight, said Glendale Fire Division Chief Capt. Elio Pompa. Pompa said a greenish-orange cloud formed as the chlorine, which is in liquid form, vaporized. Authorities did not identify the eight schools. "The British attitude is to treat society like a game preserve where a certain percentage of the 'antelope' are expected to be eaten by the "lions". Christopher Morton |
