I am making this post in hopes that perhaps the users/posters of this
newsgroup might consider the implementation of Godwin's Law, as well as a modification to this law. Godwin's law states that: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. There is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost the argument. My proposal is that we implement Godwin's Law outright concerning Hitler or Nazis, as well as include the addition of Bush, Clinton, Democrats, or Republicans as trigger points for ending a thread. The advantage would be that 30-post thread running over 2 weeks could be nipped in the butt after the second or third post (given the posters in this newsgroup), and everyone could move on. Here is an example: Typical Rec.Crafts.Metalworking thread: Poster #1: Social Security is in trouble. Poster #2: It's all Bushes fault. Poster #3: It's all Clinton's fault. .... one week later .. Poster # 2,212: Republicans suck. Poster # 2,213: Democrats suck. .... two weeks later .. Poster # 4,492: Bush sucks. Poster # 4,493: Clintons sucks. .... three weeks later .. Poster # 10,492: Bush is a drunk, cocaine snorter. Poster # 10,493: Clinton got blowjobs in the oval office. New improved Rec.Crafts.Metalworking thread: Poster #1: Social Security is in trouble. Poster #2: It's all Bush's fault. Poster #3: Godwin's Law ... Conversation over . or; Poster #1: Social Security is in trouble. Poster #2: It's all Clinton's fault. Poster #3: Godwin's Law ... Conversation over . This would really save a bunch of people a huge amount of time. We would still, over time, get everyone's slanted view based on their destruction of threads, everyone still gets to be polarizing at one point or another, and lot's of time is left for the real reason behind this group which is to learn from people's experiences. |
