Default 5.1 earthquake in Kern County?

Okay, Gunner:

Did you drop a big vertical mill off a truck right about Noon -
12:18 to be precise? From the looks of the map, you were right on top
of it - the seismograph says the epicenter was 10KM underground, but I
know better.

Come on, admit it. ;-)

"The Democratic Party is the party of this popular corruption.
The heart of the Democratic Party and its activist core is
made up of government unions, government dependent professions
(teachers, social workers, civil servants); special interest and
special benefits groups (abortion rights, is a good example) that
feed off the government trough; and ethnic constituencies,
African Americans being the most prominent, who are
disproportionately invested in government jobs and
in programs that government provides.

" The Democratic Party credo is 'Take as much of the people's money as politically feasible, and use that money to buy as many of the people's votes as possible'.
Tax cuts are a threat to this Democratic agenda.
Consequently, Democrats loathe and despise them."

A tech I worked with spent one lunch break ordering $3000 worth of
reloading supplies. This was right before the Y2K thing, which was
supposed to lead to the global meltdown. He wound up with 140 lb. of
powder in his living room, along with the year's worth of foodstuffs,
etc.

I kidded him that with all his supplies, buried Krugerrands (sp?),
etc., he'd be everybody's favorite target after the meltdown. His
reply was "Come on down. My neighbors are just like me." He lived in
Clute, Texas, so there may have been some validity to his claim.

On the other hand, he's a unique individual. My favorite quote from
him was "I believe the best value for your entertainment dollar is
gasoline."

Clute - I bet they are all geared up and ready more than most of us due to the
massive storms that come their way.

When I lived on the ring of fire - west coast - I lived on one Plate, worked on another -
We saved back several weeks of food for the odd this and that.

Remember the '89 Earthquake - we do. Lived very close by.

When the really BIG one comes, how safe will anyone be in southern CA?

With the infrastructure reduced to dust, there will be many people
looking for anything and will likely be trying to take it from whoever
has it.

So if you live there, how do you prepare?

The biggest recorded earthquake in the U.S. was in Arkansas and Missouri:

How big a post can your newsreader handle?

Here is a start.

http://www.lafd.org/eqindex.htm
http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/
http://www.fema.gov/hazards/earthquakes/
http://www.redcross.org/services/dis...0_583_,00.html

As for surviving sociatal upheavel...thats quite another set of links.

I should mention, I lost a house in the Coalinga Earthquake 20 yrs
ago, and when I stand in my front yard now..I can see the San Andreas
Fault.

However, Im a survivalist. Shrug.

I moved out of Tornado Alley to someplace much safer.

Most. According to our old friend, Murphy, when the Big One hits,
everything East of the San Andreas Fault will fall into the Atlantic.

Just like the guys in Clute, TX. Stock up on food, water, batteries
and other power sources, lanterns/oil, ammo, and weapons to defend it
all. And let your neighbors know in advance that if THEY don't stock
up, too, they're not welcome at your house after (if and when) it
happens. There'll be too many strays (who _didn't_ stock up) to take
'em in without risking your own survival.

We'd all better go stock up before King George gets his 3rd term and
makes war with yet another pair of countries (or ten), eh? Our enemies
(foreign or domestic) could break down our infrastructure far too
easily.

Well, scientists knew that the Earth was flat, that moving a human
body over 25mph would boil your blood, that DDT and silicone breast
implants were killing people, that humans are causing global warming,
etc, but that doesn't make any of it true.

It would be nice if ANY of that would go beyond theory and become
accurate. (I had a great time last week reading Crichton's "State
of Fear" and highly recommend it.)

P.S: My gut feeling is that the Big One is coming to the Left Coast
soon, too, but I'm not sure I moved far enough away from the fault
lines.

I can understand the stocking up on supplies but I don't see that as a
cure-all. Your location would likely be damaged and is certainly
subject to looting especially by those who know that you have something
they need.

In CA, when something really serious happens, you will have MANY people
who will be desperate, who will need the basics NOW and who will not be
able to move any significant distance of terrain and because of the
breakdown in transportation. From what we have seen in other recent
large scale disasters (Florida and the hurricanes), the government will
be of little help. Seems like a recipe for a tv movie.

I am always reminded of the footage of the attacks of 9/11...the only
support the man on the street had was what he could provide for
himself. Those whose responsibility was to protect and serve the public
were in the situation and fighting for their own survival.

When the big one comes, large fissures will open and then the snakes will
come. There is no way to prepare you just realize it is your time and hope
that the bite of the first rattlesnake will be strong enough to send you off
without feeling the hundreds of bites to come.

So listen to your gut. We here in the Shakey State, have an
infrastructure based and engineered on the fact earthquakes WILL
occur.

Those living in the New Madrid zone, have no such protections, plans
or other considerations. When she kicks again..a million people will
die.

Try to take your gut seriously..and make your own preps. No one will
do it for you, and you damned sure will not be able to depend on the
Government for help, not any time soon after an event. You will be on
your own for months at the least.

Quite true. And the hardest part will be turning away starving
children.

You were doing so good until that first sentence. I noticed Clintons
third term went well.

Chuckle.

And yes, a very small group of intelligent and determined foes could
shut down the USA in very short order, and quite easily.

One of the minus's of living in a free and open society.

So make your own preps.

feel free to ask questions on misc.survivalism. We take the subject
quite seriously. Serious questions will always get serious and
informed answers and there are a LOT of resources available there.

Try shooting starving children and their parents.

It takes very little to make people very, very desperate.

Both those with and without the guns and the food.

Actually been there. But the snakes were just as worried about us two legged ones.
6' flood in Elj Paso - snakes washed out of the mountain slopes. It was some time
before we dried out and got the snakes out. The road was filled over in silt.
Nice time in the early 50's.
